when i was shopping for a new car last year for under 30k i went with the 05 maxima - i'd recommend the 06 though instead of the redesigned 07 - fun to drive and big enough to put my shit in it 7/6/2006 3:25:54 PM |

^^ they're nice cars but... my bro in law has one and the turning radius kinda sucks and the steering goes crazy when you stomp it in a turn
i'd go for the g35 4-door get the same basic car but the motor mounted the right way and rwd. 7/6/2006 3:28:52 PM |

yeah the turning radius is my biggest complaint probably - it's a problem if you need a quick sharp u-turn
the steering going crazy is torque steer that all somewhat powerful fwd cars have - it's more evident on crappy pavement and when the pedal is fully pushed down - it's not that bad compared to other cars of the same power imo7/6/2006 4:42:21 PM |

my car(s) had an LSD and suffered from insane torque steer, an lsd doesn't help it at all

Tochigi Fuji limited slip differential, clutch style (like kaaz not quaife) in the mazdas, and whatever comes with awd dsm's. Both dsms had rearend torque steer with a hard enough launch 7/7/2006 10:09:07 AM |

it happens when putting a fuckton of torque through the rear end of a semi-awd car. I'll find a video of it in a bit 7/7/2006 11:58:57 AM |

I LOVE my a4 quattro 1.8T... and all scheduled maintenance is included in warranty...
evo/wrx are subcompact... I.e. small econoboxes. 7/7/2006 12:56:50 PM |

The Evo and STi are niche cars and both above 30k.
The WRX is hideous.
An Audi A4 would be very nice actually but can you get it for under 30k with options? If so I'd recommend that. A very very nice looking car. 7/7/2006 1:03:10 PM |

the a4 is a better car hands down but its not nearly as quick as and sti/evo not even in the same ballpark
unless you talk about an s4 which costs way more for similar performance 7/7/2006 4:29:04 PM |
goFigure All American 1583 Posts user info edit post |
My a4 Quattro is "quick" as hell... its just not very fast... mine does have the sport package with the wider wheels and the tuned suspension...
I'm not saying its nearly as fast as an EVO or a WRX or even handles as well... but its a quick fun to drive car
not to mention I have an 2002 that I only paid $15500 for with 53k miles...
but you can EASILY find a 2004 at a dealership for <$30k probably find 2005's also...
the 1.8T also gets the best gas mileage of the Evo/WRX/s60awd/325xi/a4 by a good margin
[Edited on July 7, 2006 at 4:47 PM. Reason : I was looking at all AWD cars and the a4 gets the best mileage too] 7/7/2006 4:39:05 PM |

The A4 T Quattro is about as quick as a Mazda3 2.3, slightly less maybe.
Too much weight and AWD drivetrain loss for the car to accelerate. Don't get me wrong, its sweet and plenty fast for cruising but its nowhere near an Evo/STi and even VW GTI and Civic Si's. Used one's are a good deal all around as well, best luxury for the price. 7/7/2006 4:45:14 PM |
goFigure All American 1583 Posts user info edit post |
yup, I wasn't looking for a stripped down performance machine(evo/wrx), I was looking for a daily driver that got really good gas mileage(1.8T)... wouldn't have problems in Maryland Winters(awd)... and chicks would dig...

I see this black A4 1.8T with the sports package, reflective tint and chrome mirrors around Davis. Now normally like chrome but that car is so sweet. 2002 maybe? Last chassis. 7/7/2006 4:51:34 PM |

the question here is too broad
important variables would be
how much can you afford to spend maintaining the vehicle? generally speaking, more luxurious cars have higher maintenance costs compared to a toyota or honda cookie cutter car.
can you own a car without making impractical modifications to it? i dont think i can. shit adds up quick and before you know it youre upside down on it, never to recoup.
how long do you need the car to last before you plan on replacing it?
anyhow, my pics for $30k might include:
I might add the cost of maintenance is NOT an issue to me whatsoever.
any '96-up S500 or S600 Mercedes you can afford. also look into the S55 models. these will give you a high standard of luxury at a fraction of the vehicles original price. also the models mentioned will have the highest resale value when you decide to part with it.
any v8 BMW. this means 5 series/X series/7 series. maximum luxury and high resale in this group would be the 2001 7 series. either the 740i with the steptronic or the 740il.
'04 Land Rover Discovery HSE7. last year of the disco, has the 4.6, center diff lock, and its way cooler then any other SUV in its class. easily found for under $30k.
i could go on, but on the same note i could take $30k to an auction and come home with a late model range rover. anyway 7/8/2006 2:20:29 AM |
