^ funny you type that, cause she went off on a rant about 30 minutes ago. She's still talking to someone on her phone extra-lound, I can hear her over my music through my earphones.

So at my job, we had the holiday party last week at a nice Italian restaurant. Before the event, the office manager had us all vote on what would be on the menu. I enjoyed the meal and we got a pretty nice gift from the company as well, but yesterday morning I heard a discussion about some of the food choices. Some people felt they were a little suspect. There was a chicken dish that no one seemed to want. The dessert was really suspicious. We chose two dishes, and they served us chocolate cake (which everyone ate) and plain cheesecake (which one guy ate since all the chocolate was taken).

This leads people to think the office manager didn't listen much to our choices and picked out what he wanted. I mean what person in their right mind would go to a nice Italian restaurant and order plain cheesecake ? He never told us what choices won, but we all discussed what we voted for and it doesn't add up. The funny part is even his wife bitched about the food and said she didn't like anything that was served.

LOL, there's a guy who asked "how's it going?" when I say hi every morning, which can lead to up to 2 minutes of conversation. So I quit saying hi.

People who ask for help/you to do something for them, before even bothering to figure it out.

Although it's a broad problem, what specifically I'm thinking of are all the girls in the computer lab who ask me 'how do I print?' when I'm on duty...but when I'm off duty, I see them look towards the lab-op station, and when there's no one there, they fiddle around a little bit, and wow...they can print! They even figure out, mostly, after a time or two to select a printer, and not print to the MS document printer.

my building is 4 stories. employee entrance on the 2nd, my office on the 3rd, cafeteria/visitor entrance on 1st.

There is an open stairway right in front of the elevators.
I really can not believe the lazy/fat people that will ride the elevator from the 2nd floor to the 3rd floor. The only time I ever ride the elevator is if i am carrying lots of food from the 1st to the 3rd. Or if i am really hungover and have to go form the 1st to the 3rd for whatever reason.

about the leaving too little/no coffee

this morning i see there's just enough for maybe one cup. i don't touch that. i just wait until someone else comes along, takes that swill, and then rebrews it

it's like i'm one step ahead of being responsible and it's awesome

Yeah we're on the second floor, and almost everyone rides the elevator. But on top of that a good number of people also use the handicap button to get through doors too.

we get charged too

it's $0.10 a cup though

you can pay as you go or notch the sheet on the wall by the brewer to pay monthly

at $0.10/cup, theres one guy on the hall that still manages to work up >$50/mo in coffee.

oh and free coffee fridays

The floor I'm on, our stuff is free. The peons on some of the lower floors have regular vending machines

We have those giant drink refrigerators with the sliding glass doors that have everything from bottled water to soft drinks to yoo-hoos to those Starbucks cold coffee drinks. The cafe/deli/bakery keeps us well-stocked with pastries, donuts, and bagels.

well, we don't really have vacation around here. if you get your work done, you can take off.

however, i just overheard my boss coming down on some of my co-workers NOT showing up today. this place is dead around here, and i figured it would be a good time to gain some points. either way, i think they should have shut the office down today after a week off. just seems annoying to come back for one day...

nope...its kinda like take your own vacation when you need it.

if i happen to work til 6 a couple nights a week, i'll take a half day friday. and i've had no complaints when i take a day to hunt or go to a game or whatever. the only thing the boss asks is if my jobs are under control. btw, i work in a construction office, with about 15 office personnel. its easy for the boss to see if someone is taking advantage of the 'vacation' time.

Ok, but lets say you want to take off a whole week. Does that mean you have to work 80 hours the previous week?

nah, if you want a week and you need a break, just plan ahead, tell your boss, and its good to go. i've never heard of the boss telling someone they can't take off. i guess its an honor system thing, just don't take advantage of it.

One of my previous jobs was like that. Working for State government (NCSU in this case) there aren't the perks that might seem common in private industry. The coffee was pay by the cup/by the month because the coffee maker, the coffee, and all the supplies were bought by a couple of employees who were, basically, doing everyone a favor by supplying it, and they didn't want to bear the entire cost themselves. The other university jobs I've had, including my current one, there simply is no coffee. If you want it, you bring your own pot, or you walk down to Hillsborough Street every morning.

I really hate it when one of the smokers comes into my office with a lit cigarette and thinks that just because its only for a second and they aren't puffing that it doesn't stink it up for an hour

You're allowed to smoke at work?

It bothers me when people who have just come in from their smoke break come into my office. I can't imagine them actually bringing in a cigarette.

Owner smokes + less than 20 people (we have 6, 3 of which smoke) = allowed to smoke

I have my own area now, but before last year I was around it all the time

I always have to ask my boss questions 2 or 3 times cause he is distracted by his day-long reading of wikipedia

I know that he's engaged in a self-improving behavior and he considers this job an interim thing (he just graduated and I knew him before... its how I got the job) but I find the job to be boring and am looking for someone to talk to

he's forcing me to play zombie-killing flash games instead of talking about smart stuff

I hate when we have to sign cards for people, especially when I'm near the end of the people to sign it. By then everyone has already taken all there is to say. I feel like I'm just plagiarizing from other people.
