^^ of course it does

they are ranked and we are shit.

until we get a set of guards that the college community envies we will always be second string.

Memphis is better now as a team...as a school with potential...no.
as a school with higher standards...no(thats what held John back)
as a school with more heritage....certainly not.
as a school with better facilities...its debatable.

as a team...yes.

i'm sure i'm just being an ACC homer here, but i would have to think that if going pro is your goal, playing in the ACC seems like a better idea than playing in CUSA. if you want to win a national title, then memphis is a much better pick right now, but if you want to showcase yourself, i'm not sure memphis is really where you want to be. although it's still probably preferable to getting blown out at nc state.

Rivals front page says that we have offered this sophmore from Rocky Mount.

Quote :
"ROCKY MOUNT — Time is on the side of Rocky Mount sophomore small forward Tashawn Mabry. The 6-foot-5, 220-pound lefty is one of the top five sophomores in North Carolina and is starting to get recruited accordingly. Mabry received an early scholarship offer from North Carolina State after impressing the coaches at its team camp last June"

Mabry plays on the CP3 All-Stars AAU team.

Ht: 6-foot-5
Wt: 200 lbs
Class: 2010

^yes please. start a CJ LESLIE chant to show what's in store for him once he comes here. also get a WE WANT WALL chant. seriously SWPC needs to make this a point event. also the #9 ranked SF in the 09 class, Richard Howell who plays on Wheeler, JJ's HS team, will be there too. here's a picture of Howell and his Scout and Rivals pages.

Does anyone know if we're going after Class of 2010 Jarell Eddie from Concord, NC?

Supposed to be one of the top players in the state along with CJ Leslie and from his profile on Rivals, he's a Wolfpack fan. I just thought it was interesting that we offered Mabry who is about the same size as Eddie which probably means we're more likely to leave other offers for big men.

eh, I'd rather have someone that isn't a tweener. from what I've heard he's too big and slow to play SF, but to small to play PF. he needs to add some muscle.

yeah but Horner can shoot the outside shot and isn't too slow. he can defend the 3 pretty well b/c he uses his length to his advantage. i was impressed yesterday on how quickly Horner got back down the floor to get in defensive position. i never noticed it until yesterday. i'm not saying he's gonna win a track meet. also i can't remember how many times he's gotten his defender in the air and then drove in toward the basket for a pull up jumper. b/c he's such a threat from 3 pt. range, the opposition always thinks he's going to shoot it and tries to fly in at him, so he sometimes is able to go right by them for an uncontested 12-16 foot jump shot that often goes in. Horner will be a great player for us before he leaves. he already has contributed a lot to the team.

as a lot of you know, i'm a big fan of dennis horner. the kid really hasn't made any improvement this year, which is disappointing, but i still think he's a solid player, just needs to shoot more (which he did at fsu).

i agree w/ Brass Monkey though, i'm not too big on ryan kelly, just based on the video i've seen.

i wonder if Horner is still getting used to any weight he added in the off season. i wonder if it had any effect on his shot. he was knocking the 3 ball down pretty easily last year, and i hardly ever remember him missing FTs like he's done in the past couple of games. i remember when everyone found out about Brackman adding weight, and everyone thought he'd dominate after that, but the added weight actually slowed him down and made him less effective. you've got to add functional muscle when you are an athlete trying to gain weight, so that way you can keep your speed.

Gryphons' Mabry has offer from N.C. State

By H. Williams Kellenberger
Rocky Mount Telegram

Sunday, January 27, 2008

Moments after taking apart Wilson Fike on Friday with a 39-point, 10-rebound, 6-block performance, Rocky Mount High sophomore Tashawn Mabry confirmed what had to be seen as inevitable.

Yes, Mabry has a college scholarship offer. N.C. State has indicated to Mabry that it would like he to join AAU teammate C.J. Leslie as a member of the class of 2010.

N.C. State, of course, is just the first to offer a full ride to the 6-foot-5 forward. Wake Forest has been heavily involved, and North Carolina has come to see him practice, Mabry said.

Maryland, Mabry said, has told him they will be coming to Rocky Mount in the next few weeks.

"It's exciting," Mabry said. "When these coaches come to see you, they want you to play hard. It drives you."

Mabry, closing in on 1,000 career points as a Gryphon, is a four-star recruit, according to Scout.com. While he has mainly played inside for the Gryphons, college scouts see his mobility and skills, and are projecting Mabry as a small forward on the next level.

To that end, Mabry has started routinely to take 3-pointers, connecting on three during Friday's 20-point win.

The highlight of the game was actually a second-half defensive effort, blocking three shots – one of which never left the Fike player's hand.

Mabry has said before that he doesn't hold allegiances to any of the Tobacco Road schools, and actually grew up rooting for Connecticut.

But which is the favorite?

"Any one of them," Mabry said.

I don't care what his rank is, if he can come in and drill 3 pointers for us like A.J. Graves, J.J. Redick, and Chris Lofton then he will be a valuable pick up. I doubt he could come in and make an immediate impact, b/c he needs to put on some weight first, which he may do in his senior year next year. The value to this besides having a pure shooter is that he already has built in chemistry with Julius Mays. We've all seen what a lack of chemistry can do to us even though the talent is there. The guys are coming around though and are looking a lot better than they were.

^x5 well to be fair to Ferguson, he was out of the game for awhile. I'll trust Sid and the staff on this one. There are a ton of examples of guys that the so-called recruiting gurus didn't think much of and turned out to be good players. A.J. Graves was a 2-star recruit. Chris Lofton was a 3-star recruit with Dayton as his only other serious offer. Chris Warren was a 3-star recruit and he's doing great in his first year at Ole Miss. He's probably the difference in why they aren't their usual selves. I don't expect the guy to come in and play right away, b/c that would be unrealistic, but he could become a good player for us by the time he's an upperclassman. They did a breakdown on College Gameday about all of the recent teams that have won the national championship and all of them had starting lineups that were dominated by upperclassmen.

Ferg was a 2 star unranked shooting guard who broke both of his wrists his senior year in high school I think. I'll take our chances on wood. 50 percent is pretty stout.

Florida and Indiana had recently been recruiting wood pretty heavily but hadn't offered yet.

^^ yeah I know. it's still fairly early in the recruiting process for the 2009 class though. a lot of the big boys don't begin to offer until after they've established a long relationship with the player. i mean it's only February. there's still well over a year till signing day for the 2009 class for basketball. i bet Purdue would have likely offered since he's a homegrown product.

^ really? i hadn't heard that yet. was that mentioned in one of the premium articles? that's great to hear if true. kind of solidifies that Sid knows what he's doing.

By the time the 2009 class comes in we will have lost Gavin, Ben, Courtney, and probably JJ. We may even lose Costner if he gets back to his old self and plays like we all know he can. We gain Julius Mays and CJ Williams. Currently we have 12 recruited scholarship players (Grant, McCauley, Fells, Costner, Horner, Johnson, Ferguson, Degand, Thomas, Smith, Gonzalez, Hickson). The limit is 13 right? We'll be right at the limit next year. So say all things go well and Costner and JJ have outstanding years next year and become lottery picks, that means we could take 4 guys in the 09 class, right? If that happened I'd like to see us get this class:

PG - Wall
SG - Brown
SF - Wood (he's still growing from what I've heard so he could play the 3 for us, plus with the stats I've seen he must be driving or getting close to the basket for some of his shots, b/c he has taken a ton of FT's)
PF/C - Favors (kind of a dream I know, but maybe he'll notice what Sid has done with Hickson)

We will likely need a post player in that class with McCauley graduating and Hickson most likely leaving early. All depends on Costner. If he leaves early after next year then we will only have Tracy Smith and Dennis Horner to fill the front court. I imagine Sid would like to keep Horner at the 3 rather than put him at the 4, and have Smith at the 4, which would open the 5 spot up for a Hickson type player that would love to come in and start right away.

Likely 09 lineup

PG - Degand, Gonzalez, Johnson (maybe we could run a 2 PG system and have him help run the offense from the 2 spot as well)
SG - Mays, Ferguson
SF - Thomas, Williams, Horner, Wood
PF - Smith, Costner (maybe)
C - ?
