he is one of the more popular Joes

and shit like this is what irritates the hell out of me..

Quote :
"Say it ain't so, G.I. Joe.

The popular all-American comic-book military man and action figure dating back to the 1940s is undergoing a significant transformation for the Paramount Pictures-distributed "G.I. Joe" film, which begins production in February and is scheduled for release in summer 2009.

No longer will G.I. Joe be a U.S. Special Forces soldier, the "Real American Hero" who, in his glory days, single-handedly won World War II.

In the politically correct new millennium, G.I. Joe bears no resemblance to the original.

Paramount has confirmed that in the movie, the name G.I. Joe will become an acronym for "Global Integrated Joint Operating Entity" — an international, coed task force charged with defeating bad guys. It will no longer stand for government issued, as in issued by the American government.

The studio won't elaborate, saying filming hasn't begun and details are still in the works, but the behind-the-scenes rumblings are that the producers have decided to change the nature of G.I. Joe in order to appeal to a wider, more international audience.

The word is that in the current political climate, they're afraid that a heroic U.S. soldier won't fly.

Joe's transformation, however, isn't sitting well with diehard fans and military types.

"I find it outrageous that they'd want to drop everything American" from the character, said conservative blogger Warner Todd Huston, who wrote about the rumors this week on Newsbusters.org and his own blog. "That's nuts."

Retired Army Col. David W. Hunt, a FOX News military and terrorism analyst, called the scheme to make a whole new Joe "a shame."

"G.I. Joe is a U.S. guy," Hunt said. "What are we going to call it — Global Joe? International Joe? It's kind of stupid. It's ridiculous that they're doing that."

Paramount wouldn't say whether an American would be part of the new "global entity," nor would it offer specifics about the storyline or the characters.

"It is too early to tell about plots. We just don't know that," Jessica Rovins, a marketing executive at Paramount, told FOXNews.com.
"

Sienna Miller is in it. That makes a cast for me.

Although I can't stand Channing Tatum.

wtf... I'm all for being politically correct and stuff, but this is GI Joe, I mean come-on. If they wanna make a politically correct movie then don't call it GI Joe and don't base it on a series that is all about American soldiers. I'm pretty sure the movie will suck anyway.

^I'm seriously debating on not seeing this movie b/c of that very reason.

I was so obsessed with GI Joe that almost any character error or other will eat at me through the whole movie

This is not about being PC or some kind of liberal rewriting IMO. It's about the bottom line and how foreign movie-goers might not take to the idea of a big-budget action film that glorifies American armed forces. They gotta sell this movie in international markets.

Not saying it doesn't suck, but it's more about business than politics.

plenty of people hated the 1980s GI Joe because it was a bunch of ninja flipping sci-fi cobra lalalalalalala silliness compared to the butch 1960s version...so really it's all relative

plus if it's on par with the transformers movie, i'm not gonna get too excited about that anyhow

Ray Park is perfect casting for Snake Eyes though.

dozens of good guys, just as many bad guys.

The main guy is Duke

I don't see how that's relevant. I doubt foreign countries had a big following for Transformers. And executives want any big-budget action film to appeal those markets.

BTW, the Adventure Team G.I. Joe with Kung-Fu Grip is the only one that matters to me:

based on the description in the cartoon starting, GIJOE sounds a lot like Team America, even though I don't think satirizing the show was among TA's main intents.

And neutering the premise is all about the money. As someone said above, GIJOE would not fly boxoffice-wise outside of the US, so if big-bucks special effects and popular actors are in the budget, they're gearing for as large an audience as possible.

gi joe fights for optimized capitalism...it's part of our brand of democracy, so you can't knock it...hell they already internationalized it in the 80s...in the UK it was called "Action Force", so this is nothing new

i can't even tell you how many action figures, comic books and episodes i consumed as a child

btw anyone who watched gi joe in the nova/dc/md area will remember this commercial

Rachel Nichols as Scarlett.

I guess they're basing this all off of Sigma 6, which I am not familiar with.

boycott this bullshit movie until they either change the title and NOT base it off of GI Joe or change it back to the real GI Joe.

Holy Jesus, the motherload

Rachel Nichols as Scarlett (again):

Channing Tatum as Duke:

Karolina Korkova as Cover Girl (her camo actually says G.I. Joe in it):

Marlon Wayans as Ripcord:

Dennis Quaid as Hawk:

Ray Park as Snake Eyes (again):

Sienna Miller as The Baroness (she'd get it):

Byung-hun Lee as Storm Shadow (with The Baroness, she'd still get it):
