I'd like to take a nice vacation this summer and was thinking it would be fun to tour Seattle. I'd like to sort of "get away from it all" and but also get a good sampling of that great american town. What sorts of sites should I visit? Any particular bus routes I should try to avoid? I'd like to be exposed to "real seattle" at some point. I've heard there can be some salty characters in downtown Seattle

Look, come on, calm down, it wasn't all totally like that
You're over-reacting just a bit, maybe
we can sit down and chat?
It's just you know I had stuff to
do, you know, this and that
Maybe it wasn't so important as you being in the sack
But I had to sort out my pills man, I
needed to stock up my stash
I couldn't do it any other day, I had
to do it then, quick, snap
And you didn't want me there last Sat
so I left you on your jack
And this Saturday I thought it was the same
deal as last Sat at your gaff

I'm Big Business and i approved this message.

r u stalkin me

j/k... yeah, seattle's fun. come on out here, i'll show you around the "real" seattle. it's a pretty chill place.

the thing is you pay attention to certain neighborhoods. Capital Hill is probably the "hippest" area. hip meaning: punks, homos, junkies, homeless, metro scenesters. Fremont, Wallingford, GreenLake are a bit more upscale, but that's a relative term around here. "upscale" meaning mostly-lacking in junkies and homeless. Queen Anne and Belltown is quentessential seattle, in the shadow of the space needle, but can be a little touristy/trendy for my tastes. Ballard if you want a more blue-collar scandanavian fishing/boating sort of vibe. University District if you want to hang out around UW students and the inevitable parasites that coexist there. West Seattle if you want a sort of "beach" experience similar to a more typical Pacific Coast atmosphere.

nothing really upscale like Cary or South Glenwood. if you want that you need to go Eastside Suburbs like Kirkland and Redmond. not my thing.

you can hit the tourist sites if you want to do that, also. for that you go downtown to Pioneer Square (the original Seattle dating back to the post-frontier era, late-1800's.). I recommend a couple "tourist" attractions: Pike Place Market has to be visited at least once, and the Seattle Underground Tour is fascinating hour-long walking tour through the historic part of seattle that is literally underground, as in: sunk into the ground, abandoned about 100 years ago. the rest of seattle is built on top of what sank. there's other stuff you can do touristy if you have time. things outside town include snoqualmie falls is less than an hour drive to the cascade mountains.

please don't feel compelled to offer any sort of justification for your comment though. unsuported assertions are the best.

wow this thread was an epic fail.

was supposed to be a spoof on joe_schmoe's thread where he was bitching about tourists, but here he is promoting tourism:

I know, I meant for you to get all pissed off and bitch some more about tourists but instead it got real awkward and sentimental and I started feeling weird

This is surely a night to remember. I don't fail often and I admit it even less. But, I'm going to have to go ahead and stamp this thread with a big fat FAIL.

look, a few things you need to understand:

(1) i hate all tourists except the ones i know.

(2) i hate people who move here from the East Coast. Seattle should not allow anyone from the East Coast or Southern California to move here, because they ruin the "Seattle Vibe" and try to make this place look like whatever East Coast or So. Cal suburban shithole they moved here from. the only exceptions to this are myself (of course) and people who i know.

(3) I've always secretly loved you.

someone did some sort of study analysing the number of obscenities found in FOSS applications' source code.

i forget the details, but apparently theres a lot of foul stuff in comments and variable names.

the Linux kernel is especially noteworthy.

IIRC, the % of obscenities as a function of total word count increases linearly with each successive revision.
