I just got a notice in the mail that they are raising my rate for Road Runner 10% from $49.95 to $54.95/month effective immediately. Anyone know anything about this? I can't find anything about a rate increase online.

Or are they just trying to rip me off (even more) here?

My guess?

They want the people who care enough to call and complain to lock themselves in for the lower rates, and they want the people who don't care enough to call and complain to pay 10% more.

Looking at their online pricing:

standalone: $54.95
bundled with basic cable: $47.95
bundled with digital cable: $42.95

I assume you have the unbundled service? TWC is probably trying to offset the cost of subscribers using internet streaming for TV and movie content (or at least that's their rationale).

My bundled cost has stayed the same.

Yes I have the standalone service, but the motherfucker on the phone when I signed up said the rate would not increase for a year! It's only been 9 months.

I'm pissed because every one of my bills has gone up recently. I ended up scaling back my TV service. Sewer is now $30 +$5/1000gal. Water went up like 10%. The base charge on my electricity went up $2/month. All this shit adds up. The only thing that didn't go up is my phone bill (contract).

Your first mistake was paying $49.95/month in the first place. Ive been paying $34.95/month, and before that, was paying $29.95/month (yes, standalone, and yes, standard Roadrunner, not lite).

Call and throw some numbers out about DSL and/or U-Verse, and ask them for a competitive rate. You dont even have to threaten to leave, and they should make you a decent offer.

I don't have the option of telling them I'm leaving. Cable is my only option.

But at least you got a notice.

I just saw it on my bill.

not to mention, you could always say you are switching to clearwire or a similar service

I heard that if you say cancel 3 times they will automatically hang-up on you. Try that and report back cause I would like to know if the guy from clearwire or whatever was lying.

Worst that could happen is that the operator could go online and fiddle with their websites and ultimately call your bluff.

But do you have any idea how strange it would be to get an operator THAT dedicated?

^^I've tried lying. Got me nowhere. Transferred to supervisors twice. No go. I'm convinced it has something to do with how the whole "I'm cancelling my digital and going to directv" went.

I know when I called to cancel my TWC I had to call them 3 times. the first two I was disconnected without ever talking to someone because I selected the cancel option from the menu. the 3rd time i said i was just having a problem with my service and when someone picked up...i said cancel and they some how disconnected me in the transfer. It was a pain in the ass to do but it got done.

Thanks for the tip. First time I called, I was friendly, told them the rates for DSL and asked for something similar... got shot down. They said I should consider a lower tier service if I wanted to pay less.

Second time I called I told them I asked around and all of my friends are paying $34.95. I said I wasn't going to pay $54.95 knowing that. The guy said he knew exactly what code applied to that rate and changed it on the spot. Unfortunately that code blocks RR Turbo from being added, but I can live with that.

Yeah, the guy told me to mark my calendar and call back in 1 year (minus 1 business day) and ask for the same rate and they should be able to reapply it.

there's a page for twc that shows all the channel line-up changes and additions they make- anybody have that link? cursory google search proved fruitless

I'm pretty down with having the entire HBO suite in HD.

btw, wasn't trying to be an ass with the lmgtfy, I just think that site is hilarious.

haha no offense taken- i put maybe 4% effort into my search

the only downer was since the change didn't kick in until midnight, i couldn't set venture brothers to record in HD and i wasn't gonna stay up to set it

I wish time warner would remove the SD channels from the lineup when the HD is available. Or do like DirecTV does and have the HD be the default unless you press the channel change button.

I, too, got my rates lowered to 34.95/mo. for a year by making a quick phone call.

i figure this is as good a place to post my question as any

i've never had cable that wasn't free (one of the advantages of living in apartment complexes), but i decided i didn't want/need it when i bought a house (and, really, i still don't particularly care)...but between the fiancé and myself, and considering that even with TWO decent antennas OTA is choppy during crappy weather, we've decided to get basic cable...no special channels, just whatever package includes local stations (the basic package includes comedy central, natgeo, history, and a&e, yes?)

i currently have road runner regular (whatever that is...7mbps/768kbps?) for $34.95/month and that's fine...is there anything cheaper? i want the same speed, but i don't care about who it's coming from as long as the price is as low as i can get it...earthlink, maybe? i know (or knew) how to get your RR cost lowered to $34.95 by calling and saying the magic words (dsl!)...is there anything like that with basic cable? i don't mind paying $60-65/month for basic cable and RR together, but i don't care enough about either to pay more than that

The lowest tier on TWC is called "broadcast" and not "basic". I remember when basic was the lowest tier, but now with digital and the like they spun the plans around. Broadcast cable will run you about $17/month and get you all your local stations.

You can get that and bundle it with Road Runner Standard for just $46.95/month total.

well, i figure if i'm going to pay for cable of any kind, i'd just as soon have the other stuff (the channels i listed above) as well...or does broadcast include that (i don't know why it would, though)?

i'm pretty sure there's a promo right now where you can add digital (which includes basic/broadcast) for $29/mo for 12 months

A few months ago TWC jacked my rates by $50. I called up and was like WTF!? They said my promo was up(been paying the same rate for 1.8 years so seemed like an odd time to end a promo). I told them of my intent to cancel to which they said hold on and let me see what I can do. A minute or so later they offer my $20 off of my rate they just jacked up, still $30 more than I had been paying before. I laughed and told them I would rather use netflix and canceled everything.

I have been using netflix, streaming and DVD's ever since and have been just fine. Get my news via the internet and radio. So what if I am a season behind on everything it beats paying thoes crooks at TWC

Actually if all you want are the OTA channels through TWC, Im fairly certain you could get these while only having Roadrunner. If nothing else, you can get broadcast for a month and then cancel it, most likely they arent going to come and put that filter on it.

^ for 5 years (3 different complexes) i had "free" basic cable because i only had roadrunner...in fact, i had two different techs on two separate occasions SHOW me how to give myself free cable if they disconnected it (one asked for weed in return, but i didn't have any...he showed me anyway)

since i'm in a house, i'm not sure how well that would work...it's definitely crossed my mind to pay for cable for a month and then cancel and hope they don't come out and climb up the pole to filter it
