If he didn't lose his starting PG they'd be 3rd in the conference at best.

I respectfully disagree. Coach K seems like a much more "easy" choice for COtY. He actually lost his starting PG (and arguably best player) and still had a hell of a year.

No way man. Roy will win in a landslide. It might be unanimous.

People were talking about Duke going 16-0 in the ACC. Don't let bias cloud your judgment.

[Edited on March 6, 2011 at 9:18 AM. Reason : Tony Bennett might get votes too. Amazing they went 7-9....]

You're probably right, but I think its BS. He basically gets coach of the year for his team completely stinking last year and then bouncing back this year. When really, they had no business stinking last year. When was the last time you saw coach K on the bench in an NIT game?

I honestly don't see how there would be any question. Last year has nothing to do with it. They were a shit team for the first two months. Then they became a very, very good team and a legitimate Final Four contender. Sure, they have great players and it's not all coaching but doesn't Duke have like 10 McD's AA's too? Basically without Irving they should still be as talented as last year.

There is no reason the Plumlee's getting more minutes should be a downgrade from Lance Fucking Thomas and Brian Zoubek.

^ Exactly. UNC showed the most improvement throughout the year than any other team I can think of in the nation. Why would he not win coach of the year?

I think he is the best candidate (unfortunately) however Talage has a point. If it wasn't for last years terrible results the early season hiccups wouldn't have seemed like that big of a deal. They would have just been looked at as a young team trying to figure themselves out not as a possible repeat of last years debacle. There would be no redemption story it simply would have been a team going through a couple early season lapses.

Roy cutting down the nets last night should automatically disqualify him from CotY discussions

Everett Case is turning over in his grave. Cutting down the nets because you won the most games in the ACC regular season? Should be a fineable offense.

I disagree with this. PG is the most important position in college basketball. UNC has a great one in Marshall. Without Irving, Duke does not have a great one. Nolan Smith is awesome but he is not a PG.

I can't object to Roy winning it though. Still pissed that they got so lucky on a few of their wins along the way.

Is it my imagination, or has this regular season BS only become a big talking point since Roy Williams came to the ACC and started whining about it?

I swear 10 years ago (when the damned conference was actually round robin) you hardly ever heard anybody suggest the regular season was more important or anyone claim they were champions until a team cut down the nets in Greensboro. Am I mis-remembering things or has this argument been going strong for years and I was just oblivious?

Also worth noting that Roy is the frontrunner for COY only because he did such a shit job last year. See: Ralph Friedgen, 2010.

last year has ZERO to do with this year. What other team in the entire nation, much less the ACC, has improved as much as UNC has this season?

They beat a pretty good Kentucky team in early December and two weeks later lost by two to a Texas team that was playing a lot better than they are now. The only wtf game was getting shelled by GT. I don't buy that they've gone through some incredible transition over the course of the season. Maybe you could expand upon that.

And you're kidding yourself if you don't think huge year-over-year improvements are a major factor in all coach of the year awards.

ahahha the refs gave that Kentucky game to UNC. I'm not a refs conspiracy theorist, but there's no question they lose that game without several awful calls in UNC's favor down the stretch.

Also they started the season 3-3. They didn't start to gel really until the Rutgers game.

If you don't think UNC has improved and improved significantly since the beginning of the season then you haven't been paying attention.

[Edited on March 6, 2011 at 4:35 PM. Reason : and if so congrats on knowing they'd win the ACC regular season]

the biggest improvement has been due to kendall marshall running the point, and that has nothing to do with the genius of Roy. That was just larry drew being a bitch, and it happening to work out better for the tarholes.

4-2, actually. And those losses came to Minnesota (a team that started really strong before nosediving) and Vanderbilt (tournament lock), both on a neutral floor.

Quote :

The aforementioned Kentucky win and and close losses to Minnesota, Vandy and UT aside, only two wins before Rutgers were less than double digits. They might have played better from Rutgers onward, but they weren't playing badly before. Improvement yes, more improvement than any other team in the country, no.

The reason the Rutgers game was the turning point was because that's when Marshall started getting serious minutes. Coach of the year Roy probably should have figured out he was the better option earlier in the season, yeah?

I won't even comment on the ref conspiracy part of your post since that's just fucking stupid.

[Edited on March 6, 2011 at 4:41 PM. Reason : Bennett, Donahue or Greenberg are better candidates in my opinion.]

My bad, simple addition can be difficult to master.. they started 4-3.

What team in the nation has improved more than UNC??? And if you think the UNC/Kentucky game wasn't given to UNC then you weren't watching it.

Put away the tin foil hat, buddy.

Arizona, maybe? Those losses to USC and UCLA hurt, though. I'm not sure, haven't put a lot of thought into it.

Carolina was top-ten preseason. You know that right? Big things were expected of this team.

it doesn't matter but he's right. the refs at the end of that Kentucky game were a joke. UNC didn't make a basket in the last 6 minutes of that game and still somehow ended up winning a close one all on free throws.

Refs don't cost anyone anything. There might have been bad calls, but the refs didn't hang 75 points on Kentucky.

Yup, and that's about where they'll finish after some early adversity and chemistry problems (Drew II leaving).

And Seth Greenberg? Really?

Were they predicted to finish the season atop the ACC standings? That's quite an accomplishment.

And were you expecting them to finish the year with the best record in the ACC after the 4-3 start??? Because NOBODY else (except Carolina fans) thought so either. I sure as hell didn't think so.

I'm sure its been said already, but I'm not reading this whole thread, wasnt Carolina picked to finish 2nd in the ACC this year, and they were a preseason top 10 team? Just because they decided to take the long, scenic route to get to that result doesnt mean they werent expected to be just as good as they wound up being.

I think Steve Lavin should be national coach of the year, or Thad Matta (but if I said that I would be a "homer")

I think you're misremembering things, the reg season is more important attitude was even more associated with dean smith and that era and the round robin schedule emphasized it more since every team played each other so no bias, I'm almost positive if you polled all the most well known acc coaches of the past/media guys/historians/experienced fans etc the majority would say the reg season title was the true acc title but of course when you had to win the acc tourny to get ncaa that's a totally different matter

ACC regular season compared to the ACC Tournament is analogous to any other sport's regular season compared to their playoffs. Super Bowl, World Series, whatever, no one covets winning the regular season except for Carolina fans.

Quote :
"Coaches at South Carolina, Iowa, Boise State and Kansas joined UNC in imposing a Twitter ban on football players, as did men’s basketball coaches at Villanova, Purdue and New Mexico.

But UNC men’s basketball coach Roy Williams does not expect to be joining them. Though he was annoyed earlier this month when freshman P.J. Hairston posted an injury diagnosis over Twitter, Williams never considered taking his access away.

Instead, he made Hairston run more in practice.

“This is America. You should have certain rights,” Williams said. “I tell them if you put something out there that’s going to embarrass me, our team or your family, I’m going to be mad.”"
