I read the book this series is based on. And honestly I don't remember much, haha.

It's a shame House of the Dragon didn't get it's own thread. I guess there just aren't enough people commenting these days to warrant it.

I have such a hard time watching these characters make the dumbest decisions. Not because I don't think it's good tv. It's just...damn these people are stupid. Viserys taking Alicent as wife, Rhaenyra not finding someone who looks more like a Valaryon to father her kids.

My only critique I guess is one of the main conflicts in this show being the very same conflict in Game of Thrones - bastard sons inheriting or attempting to inherit the throne.

Also, I liked Viserys, he seemed like a good king. Aegon is a snivelling little shit who reminds me of Viserys 2.0 from GoT.

I'm on ep 9.

It would be awesome if they could somehow carry this through and let us see what it was like under the mad king, with Robert's rebellion and a young Ned Stark, etc.

Viserys was a poor king bc he was indecisive and procrastinated important decisions, then didn't do enough to support them. He cared more about his models than ruling.

Quote :
"The author told Rolling Stone in 2014:

Ruling is hard. This was maybe my answer to Tolkien, whom, as much as I admire him, I do quibble with. Lord of the Rings had a very medieval philosophy: that if the king was a good man, the land would prosper. We look at real history and it’s not that simple. Tolkien can say that Aragorn became king and reigned for a hundred years, and he was wise and good. But Tolkien doesn’t ask the question: What was Aragorn’s tax policy? … In real life, real-life kings had real-life problems to deal with. Just being a good guy was not the answer. You had to make hard, hard decisions. Sometimes what seemed to be a good decision turned around and bit you in the ass; it was the law of unintended consequences. I’ve tried to get at some of these in my books. My people who are trying to rule don’t have an easy time of it. Just having good intentions doesn’t make you a wise king"

"Actor Paddy Considine said it himself before the season, about the very character he portrayed: “He’s a good man, but a bad king.”"

Don't open this link til after ep 10, of course, but they address this question.

Ah ok. Yea. In GRRM's world, if you're a nice and honorable person, trouble is definitely heading your way.
