The average UNC student's standardized test scores are higher than ours and they have top notch business and law programs. They are certainly a more high profile academic school than State, though I think you can make an argument that State offers better job preparation over a wider range of fields.

Also, trying to quantify intelligence using anecdotal evidence is beyond silly...

Having just read that whole thread I am beyond astonished at the level of delusion of some of those posters. Especially the ProfessorSmith character who keeps asserting that not only should we not be their rivals, but that ECU is a better school academically than State (I can't even begin to address that one) in a nicer town (Greenville? Fucking really?) with a classier fan base.

That is too outlandish to even be funny.

Hit the nail on the head. UNC is a better school academically than we are. I may get flamed for that but I'll say it. However the average State grad has a higher future earnings potential, and I would argue a higher chance at success in his or her career. Doesn't hold true across the board (Kenan MBA is a damn sight more prestigious than one from here, for example) but I would definitely assert that it holds up on average.

Believe it or not, the state of Mississippi has one of the best comparisons in terms of schools and opinions relative to NC.

Ole Miss is the Doctors and Lawyers school who looks down on everyone else, Miss State is the agricultural school who is constantly looking for approval, and Southern Miss is the Conference USA red headed step child who is not considered a true rival by either even though they sometimes have a superior team.

I don't even know how this comparison is made, since there's not a whole lot of overlap. I'm not sure how you go about comparing a vet degree to a M.D. (unless you look at something objective like earning potential).

Similarly, there's not really a way to compare a M.A. or Ph.D. to a UNC J.D. There are certainly ones that you can directly compare, like an MBA, but I always thought of the academic comparison as one that was essentially apples and oranges.
