firefox is great if you want to very slowly test all of your memory addresses.
other than that its trash. IE9 is the best until IE10 comes out and chrome is ok if you're stuck on an old platform that cant do IE9 6/21/2011 12:59:47 PM |

ie9 is terrible
i'd be all up ins chrome if they had firebug (their built-in dev tools blow and so does firebug lite)

I also do not have firefox memory leaks, even with multiple extensions and GM scripts running.
Safari, on the other hand, is a one app memory leak.
I like Chrome, but, there are some GM scripts that make working with some work related web tools infinitely better that kind of handcuff me to firefox. 6/21/2011 1:46:22 PM |

The developers tools in IE9 are light-years ahead of 7 & 8 and yet still underpowered and buggy compared to webkit.

I don't think it has memory leak issues itself anymore. I don't know enough about the plugin architecture to know if plugins could cause/contain leaks, but I know bad plugins can be a major source of slowdown.
All I know is that chrome has consistently felt much faster to me since I switched to it due to long (multi-minute) FF startup times a long time ago. I generally try each new release, and each time it feels a little faster and looks a little better, but it still feels slower than chrome. 6/21/2011 2:59:56 PM |

I know next to nothing about memory usage on my computer after I switched to a Mac. I honestly don't even know where to check it or if there's an easy way like Task Manager on Windows. It's never been something that I've ever had to think about for one second before.
What I do know is that when I upgraded to FF4 from FF3, I began to experience slowdowns rapidly increasing into complete un-useability of the entire computer after about an hour of normal use. Going back to FF3 made the issue completely disappear.
It's entirely possible that it wasn't a memory leak. But I can tell you for sure that using a web browser for an hour isn't supposed to bring the entire rest of your computer to it's knees. I'm really not sure why you feel the need to try and get uppity about your own skills when someone else relates their own experience. It's great if you haven't had issues. But guess what? You're not everybody. And you prancing around like a jackass, talking about how we must be doing something wrong, but not actually providing any helpful insight isn't really accomplishing that much now is it?

Well there are two things here. 1) firefox is full of memory leaks in every version even if you arent using any plugins. 2) osx has bad memory management thats probably exacerbated by firefox memory leaks.

IE9 is faster and more standards compliant than chrome 11 in real world (aka non-webkit) benchmarks. (and even then ie9 was faster then chrome 10 in webkit benchmarks)6/21/2011 3:22:26 PM |

firefox 5 has gone from 61% system mem to 75% system mem with no new tabs open and very few addons. firefox is pretty garbage in terms of memory management but I stay with them for privacy and no-script.

Nah, I'm not mad. I was semi-interested in having an intelligent discussion on why you think that I don't know a damn thing about computers because my clean install of FF4 with minimal add-ons on 3 month old hardware ended up bringing my entire computer to it's knees. But you've now made it plainly clear that you have no interest in that.

it is when you have to deal with swap time delay every time you switch to a different app b/c one app is using 70% of your memory. I have this problem with safari, but not with FF (using 3.5) or Chrome6/21/2011 4:32:46 PM |

okay here i am downloading firefox
compiled for my architecture
but that does not mean it automatically runs optimally in my environment
are there any settings i should investigate
(i wonder)
oh snap settings for the amount of memory dedicated to storing uncompressed image data
the number of pages in my browsing history cached in memory
damn maybe i should rethink the size of my swap file
(all things that someone good at computers would learn about within a few google searches for "firefox memory" if firefox's memory use were a problem) 6/21/2011 4:41:56 PM |

Chrome doesn't play nice with SSDs without tweaking, therefore I don't use Chrome on my computer with an SSD.
