A set of:

http://www.staples.com/Cyber-Acoustics-3-Piece-Flat-Panel-Design-Subwoofer-Satellite-Speaker-System/product_785645

I got them for 30 bucks. They provide more bass than what I use. I'm in an apartment and I try to be respectful of my neighbors, so I just have the bass turned up on it a little bit. The rest of the range sounds decent. For 30 bucks, it's a hell of a lot better than the set I replaced, plus the wire management of this is better and it has a separate control for the volume/bass that allows me to input my iPhone/iPod into and play through that directly.

I upgraded from a set of Logitech Z-5300s to what I have now.

Total cost was only $170 for Receiver, Center and Fronts

can you post some info about your rig?

what kind of speakers?
how many watts?
what's your amp?

I have a set of M-Audio AV-30s that sound great but have been nothing but a pain in my ass for years

the capacitors fell victim to the plague so I had to re-cap them about a year ago
now the built-in amp is failing on the left channel because they are poorly designed and don't cool properly

my only choice at this point is to remove the amp making them passive speakers and buying an external amp - I'm gonna go with a Class-T TA2020 based 25W amp from Lepai

Same here...if i need sound its normally from my laptop or phone into the home theater system.

and technically that's what blackdog is doing too...so his thread title is inaccurate.

this thread title is not inaccurate in any form.

Those speakers are hooked directly to my PC. From my sound card to analog SACD inputs on the receiver which means I am bypassing all DSP on the Onkyo and strictly using the Amp side. This is no different than using an external headphone amp.

LPCM 5.1 through SACD inputs

I have a home theater pc setup so...

2* Paradigm Studio 100s (http://www.paradigm.com/products/products-by-category/floorstanding/paradigm-reference/studio-series/studio-100)
2* Paradigm studio 20s (http://www.paradigm.com/products/products-by-category/bookshelf/paradigm-reference/studio-series/studio-20)
2* Paradigm studio adp590 (http://www.paradigm.com/products/products-by-category/surround-rear/paradigm-reference/studio-series/studio-adp-590)
1 of the Paradigm studio CC470s who's line was canceled for the cheaper cc590 (higher number no kevlar or phase plug on the mid range speaker)

and 1 elemental design A3-300 which i keep off because i live on the 3rd floor of an apartment and don't want to get kicked out.

(and a yamaha rxa-2010 amp) fed the digital feed because it's sound processor is actually better then the direct feed from my computer)

Also thats a 9 channel amp so the front 2 studio 100s are bi-amped.

I haven't had a chance to mount them all on the wall or paint the PVC pipe holding the center

also that is a $600 monitor, all your displays are Plasma or typical TN LCDs. My screen is a P-MVA LCD

with the internet being the source of almost all media and computers being the full access tour I don't see any reason not to spend some money on real speakers for a computer setup.

like you guys have never heard of Home Theater PCs...

sumfoo you are using that in how large of a room? Those 590s are awesome.

A small (like 4"x5" surface area) 20W Class-T Amp and a pair of Pioneer SP-BS21-LR bookshelf speakers hooked to my laptop dock at work. $70 total cost and the sound is fantastic for music.

Full home theater system on the HTPC at home.

Because it's not... It's a desktop computer hooked up to a 16:10 1920x1200 24" screen that just so happens has surround sound hooked on it.

I'm confused, are they computer speakers or are you building an HTPC? You're cross posting with conflicting information. Are you looking for upgrade suggestions or for affirmation?

What do you plan on running as your front end? XBMC, MediaPortal, WMC? Did you decide to build with overkill in mind because you want to virtualize it? Are you going to perma-force it to a secondary HDTV or watch your media content on your primary monitor?

nice pvc speaker stand

I've got a set of Logitech Z-530's for the "office" plenty loud enough for what I use it for. Clarity is awesome. Rig is an 8 year old 2.8GHz P4 with 2GB ram and a 512MB HIS Radeon x1650 pro.

Yeah... time to get a new rig... Sucks getting only 20FPS in World of Tanks...

I have an eerily similar setup to BlackDog
kenwood receiver connected to the spdif of my audigy platinum (old school) running to 2 largeish AIWA aka sony bookshelf speakers. I have the same keyboard and joystick on my desk with a similarly gigantic mousepad.

I do have a ton more networking gear and 3x 24" monitors to differentiate.
