From DBR, so take it with a grain of salt.

Quote :
"The Problem With Picking State First
by DBR, April 13th, 2012 | ACC |

Here’s an early look at next season’s ACC, and like a lot of people, Paul Schenkel is picking State high and discounting Duke. Here’s why he might be wrong about State, or at the least premature.

A lot still hinges on CJ Leslie and Amile Jefferson: if Leslie decamps to the NBA and Jefferson goes elsewhere, State’s depth takes a huge hit.

TJ Warren will be a solid forward, especially on offense, but he can’t do what Leslie does and he may not be able to do what DeShawn Painter did this season, namely be a reliable presence in the post and a guy who could back up Leslie and Richard Howell when they got into foul trouble, which they did a lot.

Without Painter and possibly Leslie, they’ll have to push someone else into the lane. The candidates?

Warren, Jordan Vandenburg, Tyler Harris and Thomas de Thaey.

Keeping in mind that Warren is a talented player and naturally a bit of an unknown quantity until he takes the court, do any of those names keep coaches up at night?

If they don’t have Leslie, here’s the book on State: run everything at Howell until he gets in foul trouble (Richard “The Foul” Howell…hmmm) and then just go Woody Hayes and pound it up the middle.

Even if they sign Jefferson, he’s going to be slim for the near future and would be out of position at best if he has to play in the paint.

State is bringing in Warren, Rodney Purvis and Tyler Lewis, all of whom are really good.

But they’re only returning Howell, Scott Wood, Vandenberg, Lorenzo Brown, de Thaey, Tyler Harris, and possibly Leslie.

That’s four solid returnees – three if Leslie leaves - plus three outstanding freshmen.

And with or without Leslie, State is likely to have trouble with frontcourt depth – which becomes a huge problem without him.

On the other hand, Tyler Lewis is going to make a huge difference at point guard and we expect he’ll probably move Brown off point.

State’s perimeter game is going to be greatly improved with those two plus Purvis and Wood.

If you’re taking State first, though, you’re betting that Howell can overcome a history of foul trouble and that someone can pick up the absolutely critical role Painter played.

And it’s not as obvious yet, but the roles for Wood and Brown will change, because Purvis and Lewis are going to play. It’s pretty easy to have great chemistry when you only have a seven man rotation."

Rumor updates:

If Harris or someone else leaves, I hear that the following players could be in the mix to fill some spots due to transfers/releases from their current schools:

Demontre Harris (South Carolina)
Rodney Hood (Miss State)
Tony Mitchell (Alabama)

[Edited on April 13, 2012 at 9:53 AM. Reason : Also heard that Andrew Young measured at 6'8" with his shoes off

I find it hard to believe that his shoes could give him 3 inches in additional height but I could be wrong.

Those players would all have to sit out a year. If Harris leaves, we need frontcourt depth immediately.

Andrew Young takes his official visit beginning today, and more than likely he will sign soon after.

I don't agree with this part of the DBR post. Lewis may be good, but he's just a freshman. He may be able to do what Johnson did this year...allow Zo to move to the 2 for a little while if they're both in the game at the same time. But, IMO, it's a big stretch to say that Lewis will "probably move Brown off the point."

^^ Agreed. Zo proved to be a great point guard last year. There's no reason to think he'd be better off the point. I did really like having two ball handlers in the game when AJ and Zo were in together. It seems we have a good chance at having that any time two of Zo, Lewis, and Purvis are in, which I assume will be most of every game.

i agree. that's why the dbr post saying lewis, as a freshman, will move zo off the point is a pretty big stretch.

How'd you come up with that assesment?

Alex was one of our better defenders, and the dude was cut, he's much stronger than lewis is.

seriously, do you have nothing better to do than try to start arguments with people on the internet??

Alex Johnson is 5'10 and 176lbs and 5th year player that is 23 years old.
Tyler Lewis is 5'11 on a good day, 165 lbs, and 18 years old.

they are both small guards with solid perimeter range, excellent passing ability and extremely quick hands

HOW ARE THEY DIFFERENT!?!

you have no idea how strong Tyler Lewis is nor what kind of defensive player he can be at the college level

Strength doesn't make a whole lot of difference when you play on the perimeter. It's not like people would be posting up Lewis on a regular basis.

For guys that short, defense is all about footspeed. It's a given that people can shoot over them. The question is whether the guy can stay in front of his man.

Sure, they're the "exact same player" in that they're both 5'10" point guards.

And strength will have a lot to do with how well lewis plays on defense (and I don't need to see him play at the college level to realize he's not nearly as strong as AJ).

I'm not knockiing Lewis at all, just think it's a silly statement to say that he and grad-student Alex Johnson are "almost the exact same player". That's silly.

also, by the end of the year, johnson was as good a 3 point shooter as we had on the team. i don't think shooting is a strength of lewis yet.

^^ppg really doesn't say much about a high school kid's shooting ability. he could score 50 points a game and still be a terrible 3 point shooter. i'm not saying that's lewis's case, but you're not making a point.

so the number of points per game that a person contributes has nothing to do with their shooting ability because 1 game could inflate that percentage....

awesome logic

50 points off 25 layups != good 3pt shooter

Dwight Howard typically has one of the higher FG% in the NBA, but would you want him taking perimeter shots?

^^what? i don't even know what you're saying, but that's not my point at all. i'm saying you can score a lot of points on dunks and layups and not be a good shooter. it's not that hard (logic?). not to be mean, but are you slow?

i'm really not trolling, i'm just saying that it's dumb to think that grad student Alex Johnson and an incoming freshman Tyler Lewis are "almost the exact same player".

I'm slow?!?! You think he scores the majority of his points off of layups and dunks and he's 5'11...

I honestly don't know his FG percentage from 3pt or from the field in general, but I'd be willing to bet that the majority of his points don't come from fucking dunks and layups.

Look up his FG and 3pt percentages and that will settle this argument.

you argue that he isnt as good defensively when you have no basis of comparison

not to mention the fact that he is 18 and you are comparing to a grad student's body and strength

you then resort to saying AJ is a better shooter with ABSOLUTELY NO BASIS OF COMPARISON

you really should do your research before you troll people on this thread

Lewis and AJ are similar in body type, playing style, shooting ability, and basketball IQ (although I'd give an advantage to AJ because of experience).

[Edited on April 13, 2012 at 4:44 PM. Reason : THEY HAVE EXTREMELY COMPARABLE GAMES TO EACH OTHER]

no i didn't. i said alex johnson was one of our better defenders, and i said lewis's lack of strength may hinder his defense.

Quote :

right, because you were talking about lewis immediately replacing aj's mins because they were "almost the exact same player". i was pointing out that you have to consider their strenth and experience.

Quote :
"you then resort to saying AJ is a better shooter with ABSOLUTELY NOT BASIS OF COMPARISON"

No i didn't. somebody else mentioned that they didn't think it was one of lewis's strengths. i just pointed out that ppg are not a great indicator of 3-pt shooting ability, as you seemed to think.

once again, i'm not knocking lewis at all, i think he'll probably be able to take most of AJ's minutes next season. i'm just expecting him to have a very different game than johnson. and i think he'll be much better as he gains more experience and strength

Lewis will replace AJ's role when he comes almost immediately. That role is that of a bench PG that fills minutes for Zo. He'll do that well because his game is EXTREMELY SIMILAR TO AJ's. However, I think he will be a little more effective because his passing skill is elite already.
