Do it before next august? Would probably even out over the year with the refunds assuming you're not taking road trips every week. And watch out for streaming in roaming areas. That 18.3x multiplier ends up being ~$275/GB

went ahead and switched to the new plan... my wife and I each got half a gig data buckets... neither one of us has gone over that, and I haven't even been close to it as far back as my history goes. of course we had been signed up for the 3g plans... with the new plans we get 4g when available... wonder if that will affect my usage?

and we both were "beta" members so we should get 10% off the top of our bills as well. our bills after everything is said and done will be consistently under 30 bucks combined

^ That's awesome! I think I'm going to stick with the old plan just because I plan on doing more traveling in the future, and being on the road may mean pandora + roaming = 1-2 GB of wireless data.

I was wondering the same thing and I'm pretty sure it'll increase my data usage. With only 3G available, if something would take too long I'd just give up on it ...not gonna be the case w/ 4G/LTE

In 24 hours I have used 6.7MB!!! When you are either working or at home, I could see getting by on less than 250MB a month easily.

I noticed I was on 4G for a while the other day in between work sites.

How do I get my old number on my RW phone? My old phone is still active, what do I need to do?

Thanks for an amazing phone seedless!

Now I just need to do this: https://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Motorola+Moto+X+Headphone+Jack+Replacement/16986

I finished reworking the USB port on my MotoX. I ordered about 10 different micro USB type B connectors at once to figure out which microUSB connector fits best. Digikey (P/N A107905CT-ND) by TE Connectivity (1554266-1) had the best matching footprint, though little modification to the ground housing was still necessary.

There is an youtube on how to remove your motherboard, which you'll need to do to get to the back side of the USB. Some handy dremel work to remove the OEM USB ground shielding made it easy to access the 5 pin USB connector and remove it.

Since it was my first time doing this rework, the learning curve was about 1.5 hours from getting the tools and setting up the work bench to clean up (including going through various connectors and selecting the one that fit the best). I have a lot of experience with rework though, so if you are novice with electronics I can offer you my servies. If I had to do this again, I'd say it would take me about 45 minutes from start to post clean-up.

MotoX USB port feels like I'm handling a new phone again! Crisp engagement, no play in the connector and phone is charging consistently. It's totally doable and was much, much cheaper than purchasing a new phone or risking a used one...

I would post pictures, but my phone was being reworked

Hey Guys. I'm selling my 1st Gen Moto X. Shoot me an email if you're interested, or know someone who might be. Phone is in great condition, comes with an otterbox commuter case, and will be being upgraded to Lollipop this month.

The only downside with the new moto G is that it's not the 2gb, but the 1 gb model. No idea why they'd choose the slower model, but they did.

I'm still content with my Moto X1. I am curious to see what they'll come out with for a third phone in that tier though.

So I want to get rid of Republic (I've had constant issues with the service and my phone which I have documented a little bit here), but I'm being told that I won't be able to keep my phone number. Apparently my number is now identified as a landline and cannot be ported. This totally sucks....the number originated with Verizon and it's the only number I have had. Really don't want to get a new number, but I can't take the terrible service anymore. Anybody know of a work-around?

I found out this is a Cricket Wireless issue. Republic numbers are indeed coded as landlines, but most carriers will still port them. The process takes longer than porting a wireless number. For some reason Cricket cannot/will not port this type of number (however, apparently no Cricket employees are actually aware of this)

that blows, especially since i was considering moving my wife from republic to cricket

you could always pay the $20 to port it to GV and then either leave it there or port it again to cricket

^^ i chatted with a cricket CSR and they verified what you said (not that i doubted it, i just wanted to make sure)...i thought i could transfer it for free to ringto, but apparently cricket can't port from them, either

turns out they're not necessarily coded as landlines so much as voip (though i suppose they're the same, for all intents and purposes)...i imagine porting to GV wouldn't work, either

seems like the best bet would be to port to someone like t-mobile and then have cricket get it from them...TMO sells their SIMs for $1 every now and then (check SD) and i have one from a couple of months ago...chatted with the TMO CSR and they said i could port my number to them using the SIM and did NOT have to have active service

we'll see if it works

I ended up porting my number to AT&T. The prepaid service is $5 more per month than Cricket, although it has a lower data limit. My plan is to wait until Cricket has a really good deal on a phone, and then I will port the number to them.

The porting process from Republic was a pain. It took 4 days before everything started working smoothly. I HATE republic wireless...and to think, I was recommending them to everyone for the first 3 months of having the service.

i'm pretty sure you're not eligible for the "transfer your number" promotions if you're coming from AT&T...check the fine print to be sure, but it makes sense given that cricket is owned by AT&T

i'm doing the t-mobile port...i thought i had a SIM laying around, but couldn't find, it so i bought one for $1 from TMO's site...when it gets here on tuesday, i'll start the transfer and do the $3 plan (30 minutes or 30 texts for 30 days) and port the number away, after which i'll sign up for cricket online (waives the $25 activation fee)

i think the LG stylo is probably the best bang for your buck ($50 after $100 in MIRs, then another $100 cricket card), but there are a couple of FAR phones (and add to that the $100 cricket card)...grand, the $100 is only good at cricket, but it can be used to pay your phone bill, so if you're planning on staying for a couple of months or can find some accessories on the cricket site that looks good, it's a nice bonus

personally, the alcatel onetouch idol 3 is their best "affordable" phone, but $150 is still more than i'm willing to pay...i'll either get the stylo or one of the FAR phones and then look for an unlocked (or any AT&T branded) phone to use instead

^^ I wish I could say the same. I had republic for 12 months. The first 3-months were great, no real issues except maybe what you mentioned, but definitely manageable and worth the price. The last 9-months my messaging service was crap. About 75% of the time, recipients would receive the same message from me multiple times, about 20% of the time messages wouldn't send period, or would send several hours late. Picture messaging would screw up altogether about half the time and I would just stop receiving texts all together. I would never know when this was happening until someone would mention to me that they sent me something. The fix would be to clear my cache and reset my phone. I had to do this about once a week. During the last 6-months of having the service my ability to make/receive phone calls was terrible. Every single time I would attempt to dial a number, the phone just wouldn't respond. It usually would freeze for a few seconds and then the calling screen would just close. However, it would usually come back on and make the call anywhere from 30-seconds to 2-minutes later. This was a big problem if I received another call or make another call in between, because when it did finally decide to go through it would patch the two calls together. For the last several months I never sent a single call that just went through automatically like you would expect a phone to do.

The worst part about the entire situation is that every time I contacted Republic with these problems, I got the same run-around. I would be directed to the same help threads every time. After a couple days of back and forth making them understand I had already done everything mentioned in the help thread, they would always just say they didn't know what to do and that they were working on a fix. They were always sure the next app update would fix the issues, and that's all the help I ever got. Of course, none of the app updates ever fixed the problems.

Oh, and my wife and I both had all the exact same problems, so we kind of ruled out it being a random hardware issue. If Republic had been willing to send a new phone to test just to verify this I would have tried it, but I sure wasn't willing to spend a couple hundred more bucks just to try it out.

Republic Sucks, end rant.

I've had about the same experience. The service seemed great for awhile but the constant issues are going to make me switch soon.

- An automatic google update app update caused the phone to go into a constant reboot loop as soon as network access was available.Only solution was to put the phone into airplane mode for days until a fix was available.
- Battery life went to <5 hours for weeks if autosync was on until a fix was released.
- MMS messaging completely crashes or is otherwise completely messed up.
- Random apps fail to connect over Wifi but work perfectly fine over (data limited) cellular.

There's more that I can't think of right now and a lot of research that went into isolating Republic (or their particular relationships) as the root issue that I won't dive into.

The trade-off I anticipated was limited cellular data for a cheap rate, but the experience has been unreliable or crippled base functionality.

Yea I was on the verge of leaving do to so many problems with my Moto X 1st gen. The biggest headache was the delayed calling after leaving wifi.

Republic ended up sending me a free Moto X 2014 to stay on. The experience has been better, but has a long way to go. My average bill is about $14, so i'll be sticking around for a little while.

If I did leave, it'd definitely be for Fi, who I was about to switch to initially. The biggest draw being the international coverage included in the base cell/text and data packages. I work in international ed, so this is a huge draw for me.

My inability to place calls consistently also started out as an issue when leaving wifi. I would be at work all day on wifi, and when leaving in the evenings I would regularly try to make a call. At first this was no big deal, it switched from wifi to cellular pretty well, but eventually it just stopped working and the call screen would just close itself and the call would go through randomly several minutes later. The issue kept getting worse until it affected all calls, even when on wifi the entire time. I tried everything and couldn't ever get it to work properly again...didn't matter if I was on wifi or strictly cellular.

My all-time favorite response from support came when I finally figured out (doing my own research) how to temporarily fix the texting issue. I had contacted Republic several times with my texting issue, and hadn't gotten any help at all. I found on my own the reset workaround that would fix the problem temporarily, and I told them this. The response I got was essentially "We're glad you have found a fix to your problem, a more permanent fix might be included in the next app update, but for now we will consider the issue resolved"

I can only imagine the reason they didn't offer to send me a new phone was because they knew these issues would still be there. My wife and I both had Moto G's.

Yes I am also a Moto X 1st Gen user and having constant delayed dialing/text issues. Its very intermittent which pisses me off even more.

If they are only a couple weeks away from a fix I will hang on, for now. But this is getting ridiculous.

Just got it last night on the wife's Moto G 1. We let it sit for about 12 hours overnight and it seems to be running fine so far. Tested for the issues you mentioned and so far, no problem. Will monitor and see if it degrades over the next week.

There's always a ton of Republic phones on ebay, I'd try there. You might want to just get a cheapo for now and wait for the next "top tier" phone to come out though. It should be happening soon since they're not offering the Moto X at all anymore.

Is $200 worth it to get the screen placed??

I found this place http://mytcr.com/moto_x.html

As far as I can tell the phone still functions normally, and all of the buttons works, but the display is spent.

I ended up going to NC State bookstore and getting the Moto G 3rd gen. Its not to bad, but boy, going from 1080p to 720p sucks!! And no NFC either!! How will I pay at Whole Foods now!! Anyway, no too bad of a phone, and it only has 1gb RAM. I went with the 8GB model since you can expand the storage.

I'm still on the 2.0. Honestly I'm probably bailing from Republic when I need/want a new phone. The combo of the 3.0 plans and the switch to T-Mobile isn't very attractive.
