you know how on YouTube it will say 10+ notifications, but then when u look at the tab it will tell you your actual count? why not just put the actual count in the 10+ spot? it's not like it couldn't be easily implemented

most of it is going to build datacenters, fill them with GPUs, and pay for the electricity to power them.

it's not enough because 1) there is plenty of immediate as well as latent demand for the services (both traditional compute infra and now AI as well) those assets provide and more importantly (and admittedly speculatively) 2) the (hypo)thesis is that since AI is essentially raw intelligence and that however limited or flawed that raw intelligence might be right now, the flywheel is already spinning, and we are using whatever intelligence we can squeeze out of those GPUs to refine and improve our ability to create more and better intelligence. the faster we spin that flywheel, the sooner we get to higher quality and more reliable forms of intelligence.

how far that cycle gets us we really don't know yet. but we've already got more than a taste of examples where AI is creating and discovering things that the smartest humans were never able to figure out. it's not hard to imagine where this could go in the years and decades and centuries ahead, and what are we if not explorers.

so these tech companies have had hundreds of billions of dollars on hand for a decade now that they can't figure out what to do with (in terms of developing new products) so why not use the money on a once in a lifetime opportunity. and if we don't end up creating superintelligence, well that's ok we'll figure out other things to do with all the compute.
