Ok, did I miss a scene or a line or something? The episode opens with a frozen dead guy moving and making weird noises and Jodie Foster freaking out and then it’s not addressed again at all the rest of the episode?

When Josie Foster was going into the school to talk to the teacher, she was on the phone with a doctor that was about to go into surgery and they mentioned something about having to amputate a leg, I think they were talking about that guy

Yeah that guy somehow survived. He's the one that had the spiral on his forehead. I think the doctor said he was in a medical induced coma too.

One thing that wasn't really addressed was how the scientists physically got to wherever they were found. If you are naked in like -20F (prob colder) temps, you aren't gonna make it toofar. I'd imagine the police would have checked all around the science building so it couldn't have been close by, especially since that old lady found them in the first place.

I do remember that scene but wasn't sure that's what they were referring to

As for ^ they found their clothes in the vicinity, so they were likely clothed most of the journey and then took them off

I'm worried the reason this all happened is going to be a major let down.

This is my first season of True Detective. Watching the first episode, and man, the music is so unsettling. It's perfect.

I often wonder how much of season 2 being as awful as people said/say (and I felt as well) was due to it being inescapably compared to season 1, which was probably the best season of television that had aired for a while

It has to be the water, but damn I’ll be disappointed if it is because it’s way too obvious.

^The one thing that makes me think it ISN'T something like the water is the woman finding the bodies. The ghost of her dead husband led her to them. If it were just a hallucination of him, she would have just been wandering around in the snow. He was pointing right to them though.

Unless. She somehow killed them/knew they were there already and it was her subconscious leading her back to them.

One thing that also kinda stood out to me was the Mrs. Robinson comment that kid cop's dad made. I thought at first it was just him being a prick. When Danvers and kid cop were in the evidence closet talking about the old case though, she kinda gently touched his face talking about the bruise. She has come across as a very assertive/no-bullshit type of person though, so that tenderness kind of seemed out of character. I cannot imagine a situation in any of my previous jobs where my boss would touch my face like that so non-chalantly. So maybe they did bang in the past when he was a bit younger? He's 30 years old and used to babysit her step-daughter.

I just think it was everything. The story was all over the place. The characters were just..not good. Even with top level actors, the acting seemed so bad in spots. The angsty war veteran turned bike cop who only gets involved because he is secretly gay and rides his motorcycle 100mph in the dark out of frustration because he can't have sex with his girlfriend.

And i think it tried too hard to have this Wire-esque kind of political/governement as the real bad guy message and 'the wheels keep turning' after lives are destroyed. It was one of the hardest seasons of TV i've ever had to push through.

I read somewhere that the creator tried to squeeze the production of season 2 within a one-year window after season 1 and, after season 2 flopped, decided to take as much time as he deemed necessary when creating subsequent seasons.

Almost done with season one. Man this show is dark AF.

It’s good, but I don’t know…it doesn’t leave me absolutely having to keep watching. I think I like Mare of Eastown better.

^different atmospheres entirely. Mare of Eastown was a good show, but a bit more... "lighthearted" than True Detective. Which is saying a lot, because Mare of Eastown wasn't exactly a happy show lol. I feel like the implications of both are really what sets them apart. Mare of Eastown was a murder mystery with the murderer eventually discovered and handled. True Detective has roots that go deeper beyond just a murder.

Not to get took off topic, but Mare of Eastown is pretty much an inferior American remake of Broadchurch

Well, things escalated quickly at the end of this latest episode. Only one left

*********speculation spoilers********

On Reddit a few weeks ago I saw it pointed out that the one hand print they got from somewhere looked like it was missing some fingers. The younger redhead fish worker that had gotten beat in ep 1 and I think was also one of the Tslall cleaning ladies, she is missing some fingers. I also think she was in the laundry mat that Navarro was in this episode. So she might be mixed up in this somehow

Agreed def the missing finger lady relevant. Maybe involved the grandma too - who goes to the dentist over holidays?

Also I think the cop son killed the girl and the dad moved the body.

There’s only 6 episodes this season? WTF.

I don’t see how they wrap all this up with just one more episode.

Yeah that kinda doesn’t make sense to me. Some of it answers questions but other parts are like… uuhhhh okay? Spoilers below:

So the cleaning lady accidentally discovered the lab in the tunnels and a star shaped drill bit. The scientists killed Annie and contacted the mine to cover it up, which they did by making it look like a race hate crime. When the cleaning lady found the drill bit, her immediate thought was “this group of scientists killed Annie with this!”? And she was sure enough of it that her friends and her rounded all of them up and killed them?? All because she found a tool in the research station matching the description of the murder weapon? How did she know they all killed her and it wasn’t just one of them? For all she knew, just one of them did and none of the others even knew?

Oh yeah and this is also assuming that this group of scientists were capable of a group horrific murder OUT OF NOWHERE!? Like one second they are all asleep except Lund, then the next second they are all so enraged that they are willing to kill someone? These are research scientists. Not people that are typically known for being violent. Not a single one other than Clark thought “hey this sucks that she wrecked our work but maybe brutally murdering her is not the correct answer.”

So then I guess some kind of Native American spirit existed in the caves and that is what kept messing with people’s heads? I thought the mine’s pollution was causing mass hysteria/hallucinations and stuff, but no there actually was some kind of ghost? There were some other side questions that didn’t really go anywhere too. What was the deal with the spiral? Why does it show up everywhere, including other seasons of the show? Why did they draw it on the scientists forehead? Its like the numbers in Lost. Whats up with the one eyed polar bear? Yeah there was the toy that Danvers’ son had that she threw out, but how did that manifest into a real polar bear? How did Navarro get the toy? Where did the tongue actually come from? Presumably it was cut out of Annie as part of the cover up, so the mining company held onto the tongue, someone (not the mob of women) got ahold of it, went into the research station after the murders, and left it on the floor? What is the deal with Rose seeing the ghost of her husband? It wasn’t a hallucination, as it led her to the bodies in the first place.

—spoiler I guess—-

If this was a horror / supernatural based show I think it’s much better. But it’s not. So the inconsistency of the ghosts or spirits or whatever makes no sense. Why are we seeing what we are seeing? If it was always from the point of view of a certain character then you can assume maybe some mental illness or something.

But we as the audience see these things when the character doesn’t. Most prominent was when Evangeline is trying to get the backup generator going, lights flicker and we see a girl/ghost while she’s looking at the generator, lights flicker again and it’s gone. Why show us that? It implies we are now seeing something she’s not imagining. There are several other examples like this where it’s just not consistent in a show I figure is somewhat rooted in reality, not the supernatural?

I read an article last night from the director and/or writer, I’m not sure if she was both. The only two things that I think are truly supernatural in this show:

1. The “ghost” that lets that older lady know where the bodies were
2. The tongue. The director said the audience could take one of two ideas away, and either would be correct - Hank went in there and dropped off the tongue that he’d been holding onto after the bodies were discovered or it was actually Annie’s ghost that left it.

She definitely acknowledged that there are two worlds in this show - the spiritual world and the physical, and they’re both living together here.

I don’t like how they used that symbol from the first season in this one, and they shouldn’t have used Rust’s “time is flat circle” line here. It didn’t fit. And there’s no real connection to the Tuttles other than bad people can make bad investments.

That explanation makes it worse.

“Hey maybe it’s a ghost. Or maybe it’s a character. But either way this major piece of the evidence puzzle really doesn’t matter”

I doubt there would be any ending that left everyone happy, but with that said I felt like this did a decent job of tying most everything up. Overall I enjoyed the season quite a bit

^S2 was too much of an incoherent mess to make any sense so you aren't alone. In general, I think S4 is about on part with S3. Both seasons were entertaining but still left a lot to be desired.

S1 > S3 = S4 > S2

Well that was bullshit. To a degree I feel like HBO has gone to shit since being "absorbed" by Max or whatever you wanna call the app.

Quote :

I'd give S3 the tiebreaker over S4 due to them actually giving us a "proper" story length. 6 episodes is just lazy. That's not a season. That's barely a mini-series.

I dont agree at all. One of the things I preferred in S4 over 3 was that it wasn’t overly long and bloated. No bullshit filler.
