^probably.

BUT, I think he shot himself in the foot on this one.

It looks like the NFL really made some concessions that they haven't done before so that all parties could agree on the workout. From what I understand, they let him determine what drills he'd run, let him choose his own receivers, agreed to give him the film they'd sent to teams + all the raw footage. Then, reps from 25 teams show up, which is pretty good. Then, an hour and half before it starts, he suddenly switches where its going to be because he can't have his own film crew. Then he bitches about it and yells at the NFL.

I dunno man, I don't think he helped himself here. It came across as a publicity stunt more than anything else. I know if I put a potential employer through all that and then yelled at them for it, I certainly wouldn't be expecting a job - especially if I hadn't worked in 3 years.

I completely understand and support his message. The police here in the US have gotten out of control with this mindset of the "warrior cop" or the "us vs them" mentality. Its true that not all cops are shitbags, but they need to stop with this "blue line" shit and stop covering up for the bad ones. I did disagree with his method of protest, because his message got lost in the action, which IMHO made the protest not as effective as it could be.

At the end of the day, I think this was a stunt, planned from the beginning to embarrass the NFL and/or get his name back in the news cycle. NFL teams hold free agent workouts every Tuesday of every week. This dude hasn't gotten a call about a workout in 3 years. Yeah in his video he can throw - to open receivers with no defense. Lots of QBs can throw. I don't think he helped himself here.

Agreed, such as asking him to sign a waiver that would prevent any future litigation, not allowing the media to be present, didn't tell him what receivers he'd be throwing to, etc.

Isn't that the same thing that every free agent QB doing a workout has to sign? I heard it was a standard liability waiver

Seems kind of odd that the NFL would just decide, out of the blue, to set this up for him out of the kindness of their hearts, with no ulterior motives.

And yet 75% of the league was still ready to show up at this incredibly inconveniently timed workout. It’s almost like there was some collective effort over the last few years to keep him unsigned and not give him workouts. Then suddenly the NFL gives it their stamp of approval and 3/4 of teams are interested to see it.

75% of the league was willing to send 1 person out of their extended network of 100s of talent scouts, either because they were interested or they wanted to save face with the media. Doing so on a Saturday did show a level of commitment in that it took scouts away from a saturday college game, but it still amounted to a trivial investment. Don't mistake that for real interest from all the teams that showed up.

Remember that time the NFL settled Kap's lawsuit that they colluded against him? I bet the NFL knew they would lose. I've also heard the NFL wanted Kap to sign a waiver barring him from seeking additional damages from the NFL continuing to colluded against him in as a condition of holding this weekend's workout in the falcons stadium.... Which is why it took place at a high school football field.

^^^sure, i get that any team that showed up wasn't necessarily ready to sign him or even interested in signing him. but they were able to show up because the NFL had sanctioned this workout and given it the OK. as opposed to a team privately working out and Kaep and having to deal with any backlash. all i'm saying is...it's pretty telling that after 3 years of no workouts and no teams expressing interest, 75% of the league was willing to show up on extremely short notice once the NFL sanctions the workout. imo, it's just more evidence for idea of collusion to keep him outta the league

Heard a pretty interesting segment on "The Shop" this morning about this point. Do you think Kaep would prefer to be sitting on the bench as a third sting QB, or would he rather be out in front of the media getting all of this attention. Their point was that Kaep's motivations are pretty unclear. If he wants to just get back on a team, even as a third stringer, then maybe he shouldn't show up to a try out wearing a Kounte Kinte t shirt. On the other hand, if Kaep was trying to expose the NFL in some way, he needs to be more clear in what he is trying to expose, and then he would probably get more support.

I don't care what he wears or says, if dude wanted to be in the league, especially as a 3rd stringer, he should be willing to take 3rd stringer money.

He's not going to play for that money, he's already being paid more than that, so this whole ordeal is pointless. He's not a starter and NO ONE is going to pay him like a starter or high-end back-up when was a low-end starter when he was in the league and he's 3-years removed from playing a snap of football.

I don't care how bad the QB situations are for the Bears, Panthers, Dolphins, Bengals, etc. no one is going to throw money at a guy in this situation when you have film of him, he's 32 years old and you've seen his prime, he's 3 years removed from playing, and he's likely not taking anything short of high-end back-up money to suit up. It's just not worth the money for the limited upside he presents and the distraction/PR you're going to have to deal with.

Teams want high-end proven veterans(Brady, Brees, Rodgers, Wilson) or they want young cheap options with upside(Mahomes, Watson, Jackson, Darnold, etc). It might have started out as collusion, but it's no longer collusion, now it's just the fact that he's a bad investment for a NFL team unless he's willing to take the league minimum for a year to prove he can still play.

the denver offer was when he was still under contract with the 49ers, so of course he wasn't ready yet for cutting his pay in half

when did seattle offer him? as best as i can remember there was a vague comment from pete carroll when he was a free agent and then a cancelled workout when he launched his lawsuit. did they ever give him an offer?

He was a high end starter for two years on a good team, and then an average starter on a bad team with a bad coach. And the Raiders JUST gave Mike Glennon $2mil. Not all NFL teams can find competent starters and you think they won't take a risk on a BACKUP??

Teddy Bridgewater had taken two snaps in two years when NYJ and saints each agreed to pay him up to $15mil

Chase Daniel has thrown 124 passes and 4 tds TOTAL over 9 years and the Bears have him $10 mil.

Should I go on or....?

Hell, Ryan Finley is starting in the NFL, that's really all you need to know about the lack of starting quality QBs. Granted it's for a team that's tanking, but still.

also

1) yes, teams do want future HOF and Super Bowl winning QBs. those don't grow on trees.

2) he was always a proven veteran. i'm not say he's as good as Rodgers, obviously. but he's always been a good QB.

Quote :
"One of the easiest dishonest swerves in the rhetoric surrounding Kaepernick went from the idea that he wasn’t good enough to play NFL football to the idea that he was unfit to return because he’s been out of the league for so long. He recently turned 32 years old. He has the 23rd-highest career passer rating in NFL history, the second-best interception rate, and the ninth-most rushing yards per game of any quarterback ever. Only 16 players are above Kaepernick in career adjusted yards per attempt: 10 are current starting quarterbacks in the NFL, four are Hall of Famers (Otto Graham, Steve Young, Kurt Warner, and Joe Montana), and the other two are Peyton Manning and Tony Romo. And yet he still needs a glorified pro day in Atlanta to prove his merit."

I'd guess probably 60-80% of teams carry 3 QBs with the rest carrying 2. But pretty much every team with 2 and some with 3 will have another on their practice squad.

I'm not really sure why practice squad QBs are in this discussion as Kaepernick isn't eligible to be on a practice squad.

Yeah, and how much is Ryan Finley getting paid? $690k this year. Dalton is currently making $16.2m this year.

Cincy is just waiting until they can offload Dalton's contract and draft a 1st round QB. Do you think Kaep is taking $700k a year? Vet minimum for Kaep would be $805k, do you see him taking a minimum contract?

Quote :
"he was always a proven veteran. i'm not say he's as good as Rodgers, obviously. but he's always been a good QB. "

I think we have a different opinion of what makes a "good" QB. Kaep had 2 good years, but his last 2 years weren't great.

Average over 2 year Prime: 16 games/season, 59.5%, 3283 yards, 20 TDs, 9 INTs, 98 rushes, 582 yards, 2.5 TDs, 8.5 fumbles

Average over last 2 years: 10.5 games/season, 59.1%, 1928 yards, 11 TDs, 4.5 INTs, 57 rushes, 362 yards, 1.5 TDs, 7 fumbles

He was missing games, still <60% passer, his passing yards per game were less(<200 yards per game), still had a solid TD/INT ratio but was running less and fumbling at a similar rate. I'm not really going to worry about how high his QBR is when he's throwing <200 yards per game, but I will say his TD:INT ratio is impressive albeit being due largely to the fact that he has fewer attempts than most QBs we're comparing him against.

Kaep was above-average to good for a while because he was a great runner and efficient passer, and I feel like he ended up below-average his final 2 years in the league. I'm not sure why anyone expects him to be even just as good 3 years removed from taking snaps in a game.

why should he take a minimum contract? he has proven he is much better than a fringe NFL player. would you take a minimum wage job knowing that you're one of the 20 or so best employees in your entire field?
