I think you texted me

Quote :
" Hi! It's David with Bernie 2020. Bernie has spent his entire life standing up to the greed and corruption of the corporate elite and fighting for ordinary working people. Are you in for Bernie?"

What’s your criteria on the list for people being worth the text?

lmao, I did send out 2000 this evening so it might have been me. As far as I know, the campaign just gets lists of people through various sources, then writes canned responses depending on what the source & goal is. So you can use those responses or elaborate & get into discussions. It's pretty fun tbh

Quote :
"Is that an actual response you got? Man that's both hilarious and depressing, haha."

Oh man, Trump voters are insanely stupid, that's definitely not the worst one I've gotten. But again, funny to see them realize that the "commies" are polite and well spoken.

Are you in NC? I did face to face work in Brooklyn last time around and never met anyone who didn't end up enthusiastic about the campaign by the end of the contact. Ran into a bunch of Hillary supporters who were surprised to learn anyone else was running but not a single Trump supporter which I guess is expected for that area. It had me convinced he was going to win.

Yeah there's a difference between acting as a campaign volunteer on a campaign platform vs talking to someone on TWW who has been actively wrecking people's notion of the left for years

maybe just be a nice person all the time? aside from the basic moral principle, how do you think it comes across to potential voters when they see that you're polite when you want something from them, but behind their backs they see you call them insanely stupid and generally engage in divisive and disrespectful behavior with others. cus I would say that's exactly the kind of behavior that has actively been wrecking people's notion of the left for years

The left has been nice and rule following for the last 10 years and have been steamrolled everywhere. I guess Trump and Mitch are just nicer, thats why people vote for them.

Sometimes you have to get angry and fight back against bad faith actors. People aren't voting based on whether some message board poster called them stupid. Or, i guess, if they are, they deserve the name.

I'm not talking about being nice to Trump or McConnell. I'm talking about being nice to normal, everyday people both online and irl. You want to be angry at Trump or Soleimani, I understand. Being an asshole to somebody who doesn't share your exact political or social views is what I'm suggesting people think harder about. I know not everybody shares that philosophy, I just hope that those who do subscribe to the "get angry and fight back against bad faith actors" approach to governing never get too powerful. cus it could end up being people who think I'm a bad faith actor because of my own beliefs.

Tone policing and expecting people to be nice all the time is a reflection of privilege and contentedness with the status quo.

I try to be nice as much as possible but the fact is there's a lot to be angry about and anger/venting can be useful tools. Sometimes shame works, and building collective strength through collective anger is extremely effective.

anger and vigilantism can also be very destructive. and i'm not "tone policing" anybody. if I wanted to police anybody on this site, i have very precise and effective mechanisms to do so. i'm merely posing the question of whether you think these particular cases of venting your anger at some random trump supporter and also horosho for that matter are advancing your cause in meaningful ways, let alone affirming your claim of being "polite"

[Edited on January 8, 2020 at 5:29 PM. Reason : but anyways, i'll leave it at that. i have work to do.]

He's talking in one case in generalities about people who support the dumbest and most racist president in recent history, not calling out specific people, and in the other case, Earl, one of the most universally annoying posters on this site.

Im someone that frequently disagrees with Dave and we've had some dust ups, but I'm not sure I could ever describe it as "mean".

But even back to Trump supporters, I still have some friends that plan to vote for him. I have someone very close on disability with a chronic condition, it is very hard for me to be "nice" to them when the health care plans of their candidate comes up. This isnt sports where argument can be heated but are basically fake at the end of the day, politics is real life and voting decisions can have real effects on people. Imagine being a Mexican American, hearing how Trump talks about you and the policies he puts in place, then being told to be nice to people that support him.

How do you know that my views are destructive to the cause and that yours are constructive? How do you measure that? Are positions that make people uncomfortable automatically destructive? What is the bad name I give socialists? Why would that drive you to fight me instead of fighting the notion that socialists share the same opinions on everything? What are you accomplishing by calling me names instead of explaining how I'm destructive to "my own cause". Is namecalling an effective way of differentiating yourself from someone who holds views you disagree with?

What if you got it all wrong (hypothetically speaking)? What if people on the left admitting some good things about Trump might actually open up more of his supporters to leftist ideas than the status quo of pretending everything Trump does is bad and everything democrats do is good?

From my experience, talking shit about democrats makes them open up to the possibility of a "third way" because the main reason they support Trump in the first place is the verifiable ineffectiveness of democrat policies.

Sounds great but it's not the role you play here. In practice, you only criticize Democrats and only praise Trump.

Saw Dave chapelle was headlining 2 events for Andrew Yang in South Carolina. Could have an impact...

Assuming Yang has no chance he’s gotta be splintering the votes against Biden at this point.

Quote :
" In practice, you only criticize Democrats and only praise Trump."

This isn't true. You're conflating opposing Ukraine/Russia investigations with praising Trump and thats part of what I was talking about. When someone doesn't agree with your group you don't even bother to think about why they have that position or what perspective they are coming from, you just instantly write them off. How is that constructive?

I was all for impeachment just not for these reasons and it all stems from me having a different world view surrounding Russia as it pertains to our national security. I don't think it matters. Thats not praising Trump. I made a list of other things I think he should be impeached for.

In addition to that, I might cite numbers to talk about how well Trump is doing just to show people that the current methods of "resistance" aren't working and that they are actually helping Trump. Me talking about how well Trump is doing is from an intent to course correct and change the strategy so that we can defeat Trump.

Other than that, of course I criticize democrats more than republicans. Thats just logically the thing to do. Just like in sports you don't criticize the other team for scoring points, you criticize your team for not scoring points. Republicans are serving their constituents and consistently "winning". Trump isn't the one holding the democratic party back.

I've constantly praised Bernie, AOC, Talib, Jayapal, and Omar for actually giving a damn. Rand Paul is the only republican I've praised because he's a straight shooter and consistent. I know I'm missing some people but almost everyone else in DC is full of shit and corrupt as far as I'm concerned.

[Edited on January 8, 2020 at 10:37 PM. Reason : stop blaming republicans for the faults of your party.]

I consider myself I pretty firm moderate, which I have noted before in several other threads. However, when I think about the possibility of Biden winning the nomination, it really bothers me. There is simply nothing exciting about having him in office and I don't view him as getting the country on the direction it needs to be.

Buttigieg is my preference right now, then Warren, then Sanders, then Yang, then Biden.

Utterly bizarre polls. Hopefully an outlier. Biden must be happy because I imagine most of the Steyer (I mean come on) goes his way.

One thing to keep in mind in that Fox Poll is a theme that has been recurring. A lot more Biden voters are undecided than Bernie. Whether or not there is cross-over between the two remains to be seen but Bernie clearly has a higher floor, which is not unimportant.

When a poll that doesn't show Bernie doing well is released, I've noticed it gets posted here almost immediately while polls that show Bernie leading almost never get posted here unless Daave (who works for the campaign) posts them.

No one posted this california poll showing Bernie leading but people posted polls from less important states where Bernie is not leading.

of course its only on sonoma county public radio and nowhere to be seen in MSM and buried at the bottom of this biden endorsement article which is what helped me come to my conclusion

I'm leaning towards the cause of this being the media because I don't believe you guys are anti-Bernie in that sense but I do believe you are vulnerable to the narrative the media feeds you.

To Warren supporters:

How long do you think is an acceptable amount of time for her to stay in the race? At what point, if ever, would you think its necessary for her to drop out and endorse Bernie?

My answer to the question is if she hasn't one anything after February 29th (South Carolina) because it would allow her to see if she can win without affecting the outcome.

I believe her answer to the question is if she hasn't one anything after March 3rd (super tuesday) which would likely hand Biden the nomination.

Hey Soap Box, I'd love to support Bernie/Warren, but I don't see how they win the rust belt away from Trump. Tell me why I'm wrong.

EDIT: Maybe I should be more specific.... in my limited time looking at polling data, Biden performs better in midwest/rust belt states than Sanders/Warren.

Sanders surging at a key moment just before some of the primaries, this could be big for him. I do remember during the last GOP primary a few candidates had the lead at various points.

Saw 1 prominent anti-Sanders guy on twitter saying he's a narcissist just like trump, a few other people saying he hasn't had any "real" accomplishments in his career.

I don't see Trump doing any debates, but Sanders would probably crush Trump in a debate more than any other candidate.

I can speak to that one as well. I'm on the advanced texting team and we are constantly told to not go negative. They did test a campaign to lightly sway Biden, Buttigieg, and Warren voters, but the script posted in the news is not the official one. It seems that a random volunteer wrote it, posted it in the Slack channel, and then moderators deleted it.
