when i was younger i hardly ever drank, and it was almost always beer, and only like 1-3. very rarely wine or liquor. toward my later 20s when I could afford beer more easily, I'd have a beer or two a few nights a week. which in the last couple years turned into 2-4 beers most nights. still nothing that I would consider excessive, and I have been fortunate enough to avoid a significant beer gut, even despite my love for sweets and carbs generally.
and in the last year or so I have taken mostly to liquor. rum/coke or vodka/cranberry usually. 1-2 per night has turned into usually 3-5 per night. I never get blackout drunk, and frankly I don't even get that tipsy, so I'm not really sure what the point is other than maybe like an oral fixation to relax in the evening. i've never worried that much about my alcohol consumption cus it was never much in the first place and like I said I rarely pass out, but I can't help but notice the upwards trend and at least wonder whether my liver minds.

Three to five cocktails a night? Yeah, you might have a problem. No shit, you need to talk to someone.
And I'm not saying that in the sense of your drinking being out of control. I'm just saying it seems like you might be apt to let it get out of control the way you describe it. Like fuckin' nip it in the bud.

Early 20s: occasionally a rager on beer or other mixed drinks monthly or less. Late 20s-31: cocktails and dinner with wine followed by more cocktails and a beer thrown in. 6 years of sobriety. Late 30s: 3-6 glasses of wine and one whiskey or cocktail once or twice a week.
Someone told me the recipe for alcoholism is every day and nursing hangovers with alcohol. Also, if you can't stop after 2 not a good path. Dial it back and read a book and try to be bored.

2-3 drinks/year on average.
Never beer. Either some mixed drink with whisky, or red wine, which I hate.
The only drink I do like is long island iced tea, which is what I drink when I am buying. That happens rarely though (once/2-3 years), as most of the drinks I have ever had have been at events/socials where it is usually wine or beer, so I choose a small amount of wine.
Recently, a colleague freeze distilled hard cider (at work!!!) several times over until it was reduced to perhaps 1/6 of the original volume. Loved the taste of that, but don't like regular concentration hard cider. That's probably because the distilled one is much much sweeter, so it masks the taste of alcohol even though the alcohol concentration is much higher as well (6x). In fact, the distilled one tasted quite similar to long island iced tea, which explains why I liked it.
I actually don't like the taste of alcohol I suppose. 7/20/2019 7:59:47 AM |

qntmfred try la croix or other flavored sparkling water and dont keep liquor in the house, that ways those times when you make a drink because its habit you'll still have something in your hand that you fan drink and it will help you cut the alcohol. 7/20/2019 8:33:29 AM |

I drink significantly less now than I have when I was in my early 20's. Now, about 3 nights a week I might have a beer or a glass of wine in the evening. Maybe even a scotch if I'm feeling fancy. 1 night a week, I'll have several beers at the bar with my wife - We have a standing date at the bar playing music bingo.
Though I rarely got/get hangovers, I did realize several years ago that not drinking heavily makes my mornings much MUCH easier, I feel sharper, and my farts aren't as bad.

My drinking is fairly consistent with 1-2 beers with dinner almost every day, so I do a case a week. Only ever go more than two if I'm hanging with friends and we are doing a bar crawl or something, but even then I stop at like six. Don't care to get wasted, black out or puke, but only happened a few times in my life anyways. If I'm out of beer I'll have a glass of wine with the wife, but I'm not a fan of liquor and have had bottles of liquor in my kitchen for years that are untouched. I do like some mixed drinks like margaritas, but never bothered to learn to make them.
I personally don't feel like I have a problem with alcohol because I can go for a while without it and can stop while I'm drinking pretty easily. I skipped it while on vacation earlier this week in Gatlinburg because it was so expensive everywhere we went. I also went without at Boy Scout camp last month for a week and wasn't in a big hurry to come home and pound beers. I'm pretty comfortable with my drinking habit, but I do stay alert as my great grandfather had some pretty serious alcoholism, causing my grandparents and father to be teetotallers. 7/20/2019 8:34:55 AM |

I don’t drink alcohol (even wine) because I want to avoid aging more quickly. There’s so much hair that happens with age that I want to avoid by any means possible. Lots of sleep, small portions, no alcohol. I just get ginger ale if I’m at a bar with friends. 7/20/2019 12:40:10 PM |

I drink less every year it seems. In my 20s, I rarely went a weekend without raging (10+ drinks) at least one of Friday/Saturday night and often both. I might get real drunk and pound 10 beers in a day once a quarter now if that, and frequently go weeks without drinking at all. Did a sober January earlier this year and didn't miss it, even lost about 10 pounds.
My usual now is probably a buzz off a 6er or so 1 night every 2-3 weeks, and maybe getting tore down 2-3 times a year. Hangovers are fucking trash, and they definitely hit me harder with age, which limits my desire to get drunker than hell like I used to do frequently. Unless I'm at some kind of event (game, party, etc.) during the work week, I pretty much only drink during the weekend. 7/20/2019 1:29:35 PM |

I did the same thing in Germany last year, except that all of my calories came from beer and coffee with milk. I literally went a whole month just drinking beer and coffee.
I lost around 12 kg, and I had the best time of my life.

But I collect Bourbon, Whiskey, Scotch. Usually pick up a bottle once/month on payday. Those I drink 1-2 fingers neat or with an ice cube most other nights. 7/21/2019 9:34:25 PM |

I drink about 1 beer per week
A friend of mine got to the point where he drank about a bottle of liquor every afternoon.
He tried to quit one day and went to get a coffee at a coffee shop. He passed out in line, they called an ambulance and he spent the next 3 weeks in an induced coma.
If he had passed out at home he probably would have died. 7/21/2019 10:46:52 PM |

i've tried to dial back my alcohol consumption on week nights. i have trouble sleeping and i don't think a couple beers or glasses of wine near bedtime help.
i'd say i try to average no more than 1-2 drinks (usually a beer or glass of wine) during the work week...and more like 4 drinks over the course of the weekend. every weekend is different of course, if we go out to eat or meet up with friends then i'll probably drink a little more...if we're staying in i might not drink at all over the weekend.
i don't drink much liquor...occasionally i'll mix up a drink, but it's almost entirely beer or wine for me.

I, too, have problems getting a good night's sleep if I drink close to bed time, so generally I won't touch the sauce during the week.
Fridays are generally reserved for being out with my crew, and I'll throw back a fair amount over most of the day. Varies depending on when we get started and where we're heading, but I'll admit to getting fair tipsy most Fridays.
Saturdays are up in the air, it'll just depend on what (if anything) I'm up to. Mostly if I'm on my own I'll abstain just so I get get a good night's sleep and at most might average 2-3 during the evening if I'm with my lady friend. 7/22/2019 9:11:50 AM |

I have random weekends (like this past one) that has more drinking than usual, but it's typically just a beer, a wine, or a bourbon/scotch at dinner or after putting the kids to bed 2-3 nights a week.
This weekend was a struggle in which I literally swore off drinking 3 times due to hangovers. This was a mix of imperial stouts, kolsches, buffalo trace, and basil haydens. I guess with age I've gotten to the point of getting the hangover headaches without being able to enjoy the drunkenness, so heavy drinking is kept to a minimum now. 7/22/2019 9:20:56 AM |

My drinking definitely goes in waves, but I've certainly had the equal level of consumption as qntmfred. Funny enough, excluding some brief periods, the overall consumption per week ha probably remained static, just distributed differently.
End of and right after College: I'd drink just 3 days a week. Party with friends Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, but wouldn't really drink much otherwise during the week. I'd usually consume a lot those nights, but it was usually Bud Light / Miller Lite.
Early 20s: My drinking really peaked here, drinking everyday. My roommate and I would go out for drinks every night and then come back to the condo and drink 2 - 3 more, while we played Playstation. You're looking at about 5 a night Sunday - Thursday and probably about 10 - 12/night on Friday/Saturday.
Late 20s and early 30s: I'd drink about 3x a week. I'd go drinking with friends one weeknight and have about 5 drinks. On the weekend, I'd usually have 5 decent ABV beers (often at Trophy) with my wife and then later meet my friends out and drink another 8 to 12.
Past few years: Drink usually 6 to 7 days a week. I've hit several periods, usually the winter, when I'll drink 3 to 4 beers in an evening and do this for about a month or so. Nothing really driving me to doing it and nothing really driving me to slow down. Just what I felt like at the moment. Weekends would be about the same. Now my wife and I may have a cocktail some evenings during the week, two glasses of wine one night, and then split a single beer another. Friday to Sunday, I usually down about 3 to 4 beers or 3 beers and a cocktail.
I've never viewed my drinking as a problem during any of these periods but people who rarely drink see it as excessive. I believe as long as you are taking care of the primary responsibilities that frequency isn't a problem, especially if you aren't using it to avoid other external factors and are not getting down right blackout each time. qntmfred you're okay in my medical opinioin. 7/22/2019 10:36:11 AM |

People throw out the alcoholic label a lot, particularly with dudes that like to go out and have a fun time.
However, i'd say that routinely showing up to work drunk, calling in sick frequently because of a hangover, and/or drinking in excess around kids or your children definitely puts you in that category.

IBanjoMan I agree about people using the alcoholic term a lot.
My friend's wife, social worker and licensed therapist, has described me as a functional alcoholic. Not because of anything bad I’ve done, slurred speech, or anything in particular but because I try to keep her husband up late to drink with me during the two times a year we see each other. Lots of people just think if you drink more than they choose to them you have a problem. 7/22/2019 9:01:40 PM |
