If you're rich enough, you could probably store a good amount of gold in jewelry as an emergency type thing. That would make some sense

Starting point makes a huge difference in almost any financial chart. But the above are among the longest record charts. Also be aware that the second chart is on a logarithmic scale.

I bought some physical gold around the turn of the century and have since sold some of it for a nice profit. But when I bought it it was only like $500 per ounce.

No, just a personal interest. The only other web forum I use with any regularity is a personal finance forum, so I have picked up a decent amount over time. It's definitely worth taking the time to learn.

I'm not trying to monopolize this thread or change its original intent. I decided a while back not to speculate on individual stocks.

This is a good free intro "book":

https://www.etf.com/docs/IfYouCan.pdf

Very basic, but generally solid. If someone wants to stop dicking around and get started on a long-term strategy, you could do much worse.

Just bought a 3 month CD. is there a trick to these or is it just what it seems? Fidelity shows an interest rate— is that basically guaranteed?

Yes, if it is a "non-callable" CD. If it is callable, then it might have a higher interest rate, but could be terminated and closed by the issuing bank before reaching maturity. They would still pay you interest accrued up to that point, but at termination your money is no longer invested.

You can read up on different special types of CDs here:

https://www.investopedia.com/what-are-the-different-types-of-specialty-certificates-of-deposit-cd-5525646

You just need to understand what type you have.

^ You're likely getting a "promotional" rate of some sort. When it rolls over, make sure it doesn't roll over into something earning near zero interest. I have a few of these with BoA and I have to call in and wait forever each time to either get my money put back into something with a good rate or just back into my checking/savings.

What is your CD rate?

Vanguard Federal Money Market (VMFXX) has a compound yield of 5.39% while maintaining full liquidity. CDs are good for locking in higher rates for longer when interest rates are dropping.

Is that when you bet it will fail? If you think it will fail is there a downside to it going higher?

I would probably do it with options and mitigate the risk with a multi-leg strategy.

that said, I'm no expert on this, but it seems like it could easily end up in a short-squeeze situation in the near-to-medium term.

not a short-term squeeze...a short squeeze.

I started to try to explain it, but you're better off just doing a search for it. Basically if a bunch of people have shorted a stock, and the price goes up, a lot of the short sellers end up buying in order to minimize their losses. This, in turn, drives the price higher, which causes more short sellers to shit their pants and buy to close out their short positions to minimize losses, and the cycle continues.

The end effect is that a shitty company that should have a declining stock price can attract an excess of short sellers and, under the right conditions, can have a near-term pop in stock price due to the effects of all the shorts bailing out of their short positions and driving the price higher.

[Edited on March 28, 2024 at 12:52 AM. Reason : still fucked in the long term, though]

Check out GameStop (GME) price history over the last 5 years. If you bought any time in 2020 or earlier, you are still up big. If you bought any time AFTER February 2021 and are still holding, you are upside down with little hope to ever recover on that investment.
