It is absolutely infuriating to read about the testing issues across the country. Singapore and South Korea are proven cases where the capability to test massive amounts of people has a direct affect on keeping the death rate down.

Minnesota is only testing healthcare officials, those already in the hospital, and elderly living communities?

America, you can do better.

It’s what happens when you have leaders that don’t trust their own medical experts, facts or science, and actively lie to the public. We got exactly what we deserved.

The respiratory therapist's description of COVID-19 patients in this article is pretty horrifying. I've included a content warning around the quoted text below, as a precaution.

https://www.propublica.org/article/a-medical-worker-describes--terrifying-lung-failure-from-covid19-even-in-his-young-patients

*** Content Warning ***

Quote :
"I have patients in their early 40s and, yeah, I was kind of shocked. I’m seeing people who look relatively healthy with a minimal health history, and they are completely wiped out, like they’ve been hit by a truck. This is knocking out what should be perfectly fit, healthy people. Patients will be on minimal support, on a little bit of oxygen, and then all of a sudden, they go into complete respiratory arrest, shut down and can’t breathe at all...

It first struck me how different it was when I saw my first coronavirus patient go bad. I was like, Holy shit, this is not the flu. Watching this relatively young guy, gasping for air, pink frothy secretions coming out of his tube and out of his mouth. The ventilator should have been doing the work of breathing but he was still gasping for air, moving his mouth, moving his body, struggling. We had to restrain him. With all the coronavirus patients, we’ve had to restrain them. They really hyperventilate, really struggle to breathe. When you’re in that mindstate of struggling to breathe and delirious with fever, you don’t know when someone is trying to help you, so you’ll try to rip the breathing tube out because you feel it is choking you, but you are drowning."

Thanks again to China for trying to cover it up.

Perhaps had output of such scenes not been squelched, we could have had a slightly more competent national response.

The CCP should have been more forthright and is absolutely an authoritarian regime and should be condemned.

The GOP (mainly Trump) has been a terrible leader and negligent and directly led to a situation far worse than it could have been.

Not mutually exclusive.

I try to leave politics out of this because thousands of people are dying everywhere under all sorts of leaders and governments of different political beliefs and this caught all of them off guard. You can go back to the first few pages of this thread and some people acted like this was all fearmongering.

Lack of supplies-that can go to systems not keeping enough inventory (although it would have been expended in these circumstances) and lack of home-based PPE production. One forum I've read called Flutrackers was on a CDC conference call more than a month ago and she said "THERE WILL BE NO MASKS". The government was buying as many as they could for their healthcare workers and where a lot of the masks were made, China, were keeping them for themselves.

This was posted February 5th:

Quote :
"THERE

WILL

BE

NO

MASKS.

The US is stockpiling for essential workers like health care personnel.

This is why they are not recommending for the public to buy masks now.

Maybe they will release some to the public from the stockpile but I think they will hoard them in order to allocate them where they think the greatest need is (frontline health care workers)."

Quote :
"I looked and it appears online outlets are sold out. One group was selling masks with an $800.00 delivery fee. ********

I just wanted to pass on what was said today at the CDC teleconference. I also wanted people not to be shocked when there are none available.

The reason authorities are not always forthcoming is because they think we will panic when we hear "bad" news like masks are basically sold out and there probably won't be any. I say if you tell people early on "Hey - there will be no masks" people have a chance to absorb that info and can make a change to their family emergency plans.

The governments need to make us partners. Tell us the truth. We can deal with it."

I work at a manufacturing company w/ 100-150 people in the building at a time (with office staff working remote) and someone testing positive on Saturday. They cleaned the building Sunday and opened back up today. This will happen all over the country until businesses are forced to shut down.

Latest data for countries with >= 1,000 total cases. I last made the list on Mar. 18 (Page 10), so I have also made a new column showing percentage change (nearest integer) since then (5DPCh), where possible to calculate.

Global cases have increased by 70% in the same time period, whereas deaths have increased by 82%. Number of countries in list has gone from 16 to 26.

Country Cases Deaths 5DPCh
China 81,093 3,270 0
Italy 63,927 6,077 103
USA 41,569 504 537
Spain 33,089 2,207 141
Germany 29,056 118 189
Iran 23,049 1,812 33
France 19,856 860 157
S. Korea 8,961 111 7
Switzerland 8,547 118 212
UK 6,650 335 241
Netherlands 4,749 213 179
Austria 4,306 21 193
Belgium 3,743 88 152
Norway 2,547 10 67
Portugal 2,060 23 221
Sweden 2,046 25 71
Canada 2,035 23 180
Australia 1,717 7 188
Brazil 1,629 25 208
Malaysia 1,518 14 92
Denmark 1,450 24 39
Israel 1,238 1 -
Czechia 1,236 1 -
Turkey 1,236 30 -
Ireland 1,125 6 207
Japan 1,101 41 14

Some scary facts:

1) Italy has almost double the deaths of China now, with 3/4 of the cases. (yes, I know Chinese data probably not reliable)

2) Italy had 793 deaths on March 21, which is more than 5x the maximum daily deaths that China recorded -- 150.

3) 1 in 1,000 Italians and Swiss have contracted COVID-19. Spaniards not far behind.

4) NY State has slightly more cases than France, at less than a third of the population.

5) COVID-19 is now found in 195 countries and territories.

Quote :
"Elderly 'dead and abandoned' in Spanish care homes
Soldiers tackling Spain's coronavirus epidemic by disinfecting residential care homes have found a number of elderly people abandoned and left for dead in their beds, the country's defence minister has said.

The news comes as Spain's death toll from the disease rose from 1,720 on Sunday to 2,182. The total number of confirmed cases has increased to 33,089.

"The army has seen some totally abandoned elderly people – even some who were dead in their beds,” Margarita Robles told the Ana Rosa TV programme.

Those responsible would be met with "the full weight of the law", the minister added."

Stay-at-home order for Mecklenburg county effective Thursday at 8am until April 16th

Quote :
"Under the order, county residents may visit grocery stores, pharmacies, healthcare providers if needed and restaurant drive-throughs and takeout services. They may take walks, play golf, care for family members and help others get needed supplies.

What they can’t do: Go to work unless their jobs provide a defined list of essential services, visit family and friends, including those in hospitals except under limited circumstances or travel unless for a permitted reason."

good thing golf courses are essential services. I'm sure everyone will be playing golf by themselves/with their shelter-in-place cohabitants and not with their regular golf buddies.

Like we're closing state parks, but golf courses are ok

No they're holding it up because the McConnell plan is to just give billions of dollars to big business unchecked as well as the ability to blindly give money to Trump hotels without taxpayer knowledge for 6 months
