Well apparently there's a bill on the .gov website that is circling around fb and driving the republicans nuts because it's got gun control in it.

This was a tweet thread I saw making the rounds on twitter (it includes specific text from those links I posted above). It seemed ridiculous so I pretty much dismissed it without researching to see what was or was not true. No idea if it’s what anybody itt was referring to.

My understanding is that the House bill contained spending on special interest items that weren't very relevant to the current crisis but that the delay in negotiation resolution has been due to oversight restrictions regarding the Treasury department's $500 billion corporate bailout fund.

On a totally unrelated topic, why are people still taking cruises?

A lot of cruises last for a month or longer so many of them left before this whole thing really really got going.

Simple thing to do is close ports to cruise ships. Make them go to their tax Haven ports of call.

Tough shit if you're an American on one. That or quarantine every single person on the ship. Don't let them go home.

why the fuck is it a good idea for all these stores to close early?

Everyone still has to go to the food shops. Now we have more people-density since the same amount of people have to go in less hours of open...

Whats the logic here?

Any politician in the House or Senate that pushes through their pet belief or project that has absolutely nothing to deal with coronavirus or the effects of it (e.g. economic), is grounds for expulsion in my view, regardless of the party they belong to.

Sure, I can make it by 8pm, but my question is why?

The demand for food is inelastic - a grocery store's volume isnt really gonna change on average, because the volume of people it serves is the same pretty much all the time. They have busy and quiet periods over the week, but on a long enough interval they should have about the same sales.

Why now do they need to close earlier (implied reason b/c of covid)

The grocery stores near me are closing early and spending the time cleaning and stocking. Stocking while closed allows their employees to practice social distancing.

Hopefully you understand the benefits of cleaning.

Yes on a long enough interval they’ll have about the same sales, although I’d disagree with this right now because people are eating in more and thus demand on grocery stores will go up. However right now there is a spike in demand for product, this necessitates additional deliveries from the central warehouse. Most grocery stores don’t have huge storerooms, in order to restock they need additional time.

First off they are choosing to close earlier, not directed by government as far as I'm aware.

With restaurants mostly closed, and with people in general consuming more due to uncertainty/quarantines/shelter-in-place orders/potential lockdown orders demand is clearly much higher. The stores are shortening their hours to give them more time to restock shelves and implement new cleaning procedures/sanitize surfaces/the store as a whole.

For a business choosing to curtail their own hours instead of selling more and taking in more money I think it is pretty telling that it is for valid reasons.

Yes, and it's not really practical to do mass restocking during business hours.

https://mattstoller.substack.com/p/stop-the-6-trillion-coronavirus-corporate

Quote :
"
On Saturday, I went over the Christmas wish list of corporate lobbyists in this process, everything from Adidas letting people deduct gym costs to candymakers seeking a $500 million loan to Jeff Bezos and Elon Musk seeking $5B in loans for their space corporations. Of course what Wall Street sought, and got, dwarfed all of these requests.

Here’s how you can tell. A lot of reporters have been talking about how this is a $2 trillion deal, with a bunch of spending for hospitals and whatnot. But last night White House advisor Larry Kudlow announced it is actually a $6 trillion deal.
"

Quote :
"The cash freeze to small business is already causing a crisis. FTC Commissioner Rohit Chopra made these points on Tucker Carlson last night. First, he noted, small business loan sharks are “crippling cash-strapped companies” with onerous contracts. Second, powerful corporations are using their position to cut off small businesses from supply chains. And third, corporate raiders are planning to buy up these businesses cheap. “Corporate raiders and PE firms are already sharpening their knives,” said one Goldman Sachs associate.

And that’s where this legislation comes in. Wall Street, with this bill, will now have $4-6T of government guaranteed low cost credit to go shopping for businesses in trouble. We could see the mother of all roll-ups, as small and medium sized businesses desperately try to get whatever they can from deep-pocketed private equity investors and monopolists. If that happens, America could look like a very different country after this pandemic is over."

NY State has the 5th highest number of cases (31,000) in the world if US states are considered as countries. At this rate, it will become number one probably within 2 weeks or so.

Australian cruise becomes nation's worst coronavirus cluster
https://reuters.com/article/amp/idUSKBN21C1BJ

Australia lets a cruise start on March 8 (WTF already); virus gets introduced on to ship (of course); cruise ends on March 19 in Australia with many people sick; government tells everybody (2,700+ people) to go home and self-isolate; passengers travel to their homes all over Australia hundreds of miles away.

Even Trump hasn't done something this utterly stupid.

Why the heck are Western countries so woefully ignorant and idiotic at dealing with an epidemic?

Thats really just the rate of testing and not the rate of infection. Notice how that list lines up perfectly with the countries with more organized health systems at the top.
