^^actually I agree with that. That's what's so puzzling about this decision. "He's so old!" It's not like he's 40 or something. I just don't see how Israel/Spain/Korea would want him less after next year. Is there that much competition for spots in those leagues, that they would pass on a 24 yo because he's not 20?

yes, he is already 24. and these guys money making years I think can confidently say only go til probably 35. No reason to wait. Go get em Lacey, hopefully in the NBA$$$

He won't be making money now if he doesn't go now, and there's the possibility that he could be injured in college and then not have the opportunity to have a career in basketball. and let's be honest, the whole degree-thing is silly for someone who's going to play a professional sport. They can take night classes over several years, or wait until their sports career is over to get the remaining credits they need for a degree. It'd be great for us if he came back, and good for him if he did something to get more recognition to help him get a better contract (win acc poy, a national championship, etc.), but there are plenty of valid reasons for him to go now.

Yeah $500k might be a little high for salary alone. $100k starting contracts in the Euroleague and various other overseas leagues is very common. I have no idea what kind of earning potential there is in endorsements but there has to be some. Don't forget the tax advantages of being an American and earning your income outside of the country.

Provided you live in the foreign country for a full tax year (or at least 330 days) and are paid by a company from that country (or an American company with an office in that country) there is a pretty nice tax break. In 2015 the first $100,800 qualifies to be excluded from federal income tax.

^^ Yes you are taxed by the foreign country. No you are not double taxed. The foreign earned income exclusion only takes you to $100,800 as far as the IRS is concerned. Above that you utilize the foreign tax credit. Taxes paid for a foreign goernment are subtracted from your U.S. tax liability. If you make less than the max that can be counted towards the FEIE then there is also a foreign housing deduction that can be used to make up the difference.

Say Lacey goes and plays for PBC CSKA Moscow where the federal rate for residents is 13% max. Using $100k as the magic salary number he would be able to save $11398 (using Alabama as home state) or $12140 (using NC as home state). Above $100k it's basically a wash except for the 6.2% that is taken for OASDI here. Yeah he could pay more in other countries. It's not a guaranteed tax win if you go work overseas but the potential is definitely there.

From what I've read online it sounded like Gott wasn't going to comment or release a statement until it was 100% set in stone that he was gone. Since yesterday was the last day to remove your name/submit the final paperwork or whatever then he officially can't come back now.

I selfishly would've loved to see him stick around one more year, but at 24 years old he probably should just go ahead and get paid whether that's in Europe or the D-League. Gonna miss his step back rainbow threes.
