IIRC, in 2017 if we had beaten Clemson, we only had to win 1 of our last 3 games to clinch the division. We were in the driver's seat with a team loaded with NFL talent on both sides of the ball. That loss was probably the biggest missed opportunity in program history IMO.

Besides QB, that 2017 was insanely more talented than the 2010 squad. Granted, 2010 had 3 better qbs than 2017.

I get why he doesnt do it, he's not physically built for it, but if our OL cant run block we need a way to manufacture a couple extra first downs a game. His arm talent is too good to waste on an offense that can only score 35 on Wake

Yup. Just couldn’t get it done.

Undefeated at home on the season. Beat Clemson. Beat UNC. 6-2 in the conference. In the mix for division title (even if BC loses, that’s still something imo. Just being in the conversation to win the division/conference is rare as fuck at State).

13-5 in the ACC over the last 2 seasons. 25-17 in the ACC over the last 5 years (if my math is right) and even that includes a total dud of a season in 2019. He’s not perfect. LSU isn’t gonna come hire him away. But what he’s doing here is pretty much unprecedented for NC State in my life. Is that because DD is so good or a sign of how bad our program is historically? A little of both.

Every loss doesn’t have to be an scathing indictment of Doeren and grounds for termination. And every win doesn’t mean he needs to be extended. It’s easy to get caught up in the heat of the moment during a game. He’s a solid coach that is kinda boring and doesn’t excite a lot of people. But he wins games at a fairly impressive clip. It’d be really really awesome to win a few more games though.

^^ and it’s totally fine to point that stuff out. That’s what I meant by saying that every loss isn’t a reason to fire DD and every win isn’t proof he’s a HOFer. I agree that the playcalling was really head scratching at times. This was hardly a perfect game for the coaches or players. I’m just looking at the entire picture here and trying to figure out why anybody would reasonably suggest that we should fire Doeren and start all over again.

The shit about firing him feels ridiculous to me. And I’d be saying that even if we lost tonight. There’s room for nuance. You can criticize a coach and not want him fired. You can want to keep a coach and still criticize his decisions.

The depth on this team was huge this year. Overcame injuries to at least 5 regular starters on D (Fagan, Savion Jackson, Clark, Moore, Wilson) and still had an overall really solid defense. Not every year will have that level of depth, and I’m sure it was partially due to the extra year of eligibility with Covid. But the depth and roster management from the staff has been really good imo. We aren’t an elite level team that can have 4* back ups. So having this level of depth was key.

I think people that say he’s overpaid truly don’t understand the market value of coaches right now. Let’s just say Doeren leaves this off-season - purely hypothetical. And we have to go hire a new coach. It’s gonna cost us $3M to replace him at a minimum. And that’s for an unproven commodity. DD is a known commodity. He’s not Dabo or Saban or Kirby. But we know what we’re getting with him and that should be worth more to State than whatever his potential replacement would demand on the open market. I think DD’s salary is in the $3.5M range. Which sounds like a lot of money. But fucking Dino Babers gets paid that much. Mack Brown gets paid close to that. Has Doeren had better and more consistent results than Dino and Mack? Yes.

He doesn’t need a $6M contract. But in the $4M range is well deserved

The market is crazy. But you just can’t get a coach for $1M anymore. Sorry. You wanna play P5 football at a competitive level, this is the price

He’s never been “grossly overpaid” for his results. His pay has pretty much always been middle of the pack in the ACC. Coaching salaries are bonkers but that’s not necessarily unique to the last couple of years. More of a trend over the last decade.
