Yeah I agree the sign isn't gonna deter anybody who would steal food. The sign is actually kinda dumb. Nobody is under impression that all refrigerator food is up for grabs. Everybody in the workplace is well aware that people bring their own lunch, put it in the fridge, and expect it to be there when they're ready for it.

I've never worked anywhere where that's been a problem But it's always just struck me as really fucked up and surprising, I guess.

Yeah, never been an issue any where i've ever worked either. In fact, people will forget that they put a drink or an apple or a yogurt in there and people won't even remove it when it's old and moldy.

Never had a problem with lunch theft myself, but when I worked in Rocky Mount, someone stole a whole ham that someone had stored in the fridge before Thanksgiving one year. I guess they figured if they were going to do it, they were going to do it big.

That weirdo is gone. We knew she was stupid, but we never thought she would actually falsify data ( because it actually takes some intelligence for it to make sense). She got caught making up numbers for an animal experiment. Another investigator during a floor meeting was suspicious of a graph that looked too "clean". So we followed the trail from there. Kinda fun...kinda like forensics work.

my boss thinks that an ellipses can be used instead of a comma and uses them even in correspondence with clients and regulators.

Getting sent half a terabyte of data from a client in .bcp (SQL Server backup file) format when we're a Unix/Postgres shop.

Also getting sent comma delimited data that isn't text qualified that has French currency data in it (use comma instead of a period for the decimal).

I am torn. I know the right thing to do is give an honest opinion/evaluation on the student. I've been asked by a student to complete evaluations for his graduate school(s) he is applying. He is likeable, friendly, blah blah blah, but I don't think he is ready for a dual degree ( M.D/PhD) and I wasn't happy with this performance this summer. I felt that toward the end he cared more about padding his resume with the experience, but not really caring about the work. I'm more concerned about his overall lack of understanding and problem solving skills.

Submit sub job on Friday for a Wednesday absence.
Sub picks up job over the weekend.
Get classroom/lessons ready.
Sub cancels at 5:40 AM on the day of the absence.
Job goes unfilled.
Co-workers have to cover my classes.

^Is he asking for an evaluation of the material he's submitting or is he asking for an evaluation like a recommendation?

acraw: I'm in academia, and you should TOTALLY write him an honest recommendation. play down his demerits and emphasize his virtues, but get the point across.

also, if he has several options for his evaluator, then explain frankly to him that you can't give him the strongest one, and suggest that he might ask somebody else.

Point is, if you give him a good one, then maybe he gets in over some more qualified person who also might be nice and friendly and likeable.

REcommendations are HUGE, and you should take them very seriously. You're not being a jerk if you tell the truth on the recommendation, but you ARE being a jerk if you lie.

You might check out page 3 of this handout on academic advising, by Sandra Paur in N.C. State math:

We had a release tonight of some configuration changes. Part of the changes apply to how we connect to another application, so I get the information from the team which maintains that application. When they give it to us, I notice that some things don't look right, so I asked the guy who gave it to me to double check it. He supposedly did, and said it was right.

Guess who was still at work tonight at 11pm due to incorrect configurations supplied by that team?

It would have been nice to interview for a Manager's position (with no employees to manage, my dream job!) but instead it was recently given to a 25 year old with less than three years of experience as a promotion. I have to bite my tongue from asking her if she is a VP yet when I run into her in the break room.

I was working for a client once who wanted me to write some code to import a comma delimited text file in SAS and do some stuff with it. Problem was the number value fields had commas in it so when I asked if the group he got it from could send it with another delimiter instead of asking he just said probably not. It amazes me that people who WORK FOR THE SAME COMPANY can't work together on something so simple as pulling data in a usable format. Corporate Amurica.

^Similarly, co-workers who don't bother to check if you look busy or not before posting up in front of your desk and launching into a conversation. Happened the other day when I was on a call on my headset; I had to point to the headset before he even noticed I was on a call. His desk is within earshot; did he think I'd been talking to myself for a half hour?

Us: please send your PE seal & signature in an image format so we can add it to the drawings
Them: it is our company policy to not send out electronic seals. Please send us the drawings so that we may add them.

... hey moran, if we send you the CAD for you to add seals, you still have to send it back to us... which means you just sent us your seals... just stfu and do as told.

Two for me.

"Can I ask you a question?" Well, shit, you just did. Not only are your question and my answer made irrelevant, you've also wasted more of my time. What is the impulse here? You aren't really asking permission or anything, so what is the purpose?

"Do you have a minute?" Everyone has a minute. If you're talking to me, you probably need at least 30. Even if you anticipate that I will have a simple answer for you, you should know by now that I'm going to want to review what led you to reach out to me, confirm that you understand the solution, and go over follow-up scenarios. There is basically no meaningful professional interaction we can have that will take only a minute. There is a finite amount of time in the day, and you are not a raindrop in the ocean.

There is a world of difference between venting about annoyances and being difficult to work with. I am regularly voted one of the most helpful people in the office (which is actually a big deal around review time).

But damn it, I should be difficult to work with in a sense. My time is unarguably valuable, and people ought to have their ducks in a row before they ask me anything work-related. Don't suck up 10 minutes of my day just because you forgot to get a screenshot or the exact text of an error message.

guy in my office is the archetype "sales" guy, basically the VP of a team of guys who do sales for a part of my organization. social and engaging to the point of being a sociopath. complete lack of self-awareness in his earnest insincerity...

basically, this Robert Webb character: http://youtu.be/0jYdTJ_tXWU

the actual annoyance is, TWICE now, ive entered a restroom on our floor, with three urinals. i actually give zero fucks about having to pee directly next to another dude, and think the adherence to the "urinal space" rule is somewhat silly. the restroom is directly off a very long hallway, affording you the opportunity to easily ascertain whether or not someone recently (in the last 10-15 seconds) exited the restroom. you would see them. there isn't anywhere else to go. and yet, in both instances of entering the restroom, ive walked in to hear him just beginning to urinate as I approach the three adjacent urinals, and b) using the middle one. i have no problem actually choosing either adjacent urinal and peeing, but it's so bizarre to me that he would just pick the middle one both times, when clearly, there was no one in there immediately prior so as to cause him to have to be in the middle urinal, because i would have seen one, or two people in the hallway.

it's just so bizarre to me that that's apparently his go to spot. even as i profess to not care about spacing, it just consumes me with questions about the basis for his choice.

Bunch of germophobes in the building I work in (or maybe the same guy). I'll be sitting in a stall and hear someone grab a paper towel before they open a stall door or worse, not wash their hands after leaving a stall or urinal and grab a paper towel on the way out. wtf

One of the developers on my team keeps committing very rough code to our project, and I know he can do better. Every time I ask him about it, he says something to the effect of "yeah, I'll clean that up later, cause we have two weeks at the end of this release to do cleanup, don't worry about it. I was running out of time on that req, so I just put in what I had so I could move on." and I'm like "code this bad isn't finished, and it is slowing me and everyone else down who has to work around it." I had a task two days ago that should have taken me about two hours to do, and due to all of the shit he left behind, it took my two days to finish it. Thanks for fucking up my deliverables and schedule so you can "move on to the next item" after half-assing the previous one.

A man and his son both have appointments to get their teeth cleaned. Man sits in the chair first and says, "I'll go first since you have to get your "dental vaccine shots" today, son. Heh heh heh heh." Man looks at me with a smirk on his face seemingly searching for my amused approval. I look back at him, expressionless. What I REALLY want to say is "God dammit, dude! Parents like you are part of the reason kids hate coming to get their teeth cleaned!!!"

^^ they do, but this guy doesn't usually half-ass things. He's just taken on more work than he can reasonably handle in the time allotted, and he's cutting corners instead of passing off work to other people. I like the guy, and he does good work, which is why it's so annoying, cause I know he can do better. After this round is over and things settle down, I'm gonna have a talk with him about exactly that, but we've gotta get shit out the door first.

^The guy was trying to be funny. His son wasn't getting any shots that day. There are no such things as dental vaccines. He just thought it would be a good time to freak his son out. When the kid got in the chair he was jumpy as shit. Every time I reached for an instrument he'd try to look at what I was getting and put his hands up over his mouth. I couldn't convince him that I wasn't going to be giving him a shot.

I brought a new internal employee into my department to fill a vacancy, and part of the stipulation of bringing her on was to share her 1/2 time with her previous department (just across the hall). This was supposed to last a month, we're going on 10 weeks now. Well her cunt of a ex-boss is increasing this poor girl's workload instead of weening her off, and increasingly has her doing menial time-consuming tasks (latest one is running over to her office to change the toner in her printed). So now my department is falling behind, I'm still doing the lion's share of her job, AND I've been told by upper management that I'm not allowed to confront this old boss about the situation.

Let's talk about internet usage for a minute. At our school we have wifi for teacher laptops, laptop carts, ipad carts, etc to run off of. Well, the password for the wifi is widely known by the students... and every student with a smart phone logs in to the school wifi during the day, which at times cripples the internet here. The past few weeks have been particularly bad... i'm thinking it might have to do with the recent iphone OS upgrade... do they push that through the cell network or wifi?

Why not just have them change the WiFi password if its pretty obvious the students know it. Obviously it probably wont take long for someone to figure it out and spread it around again but maybe it should be policy to change it every so often and send out an email to all the teachers.

Also I have no idea but do they have any policies you can enforce for students caught using the wifi network unauthorized?

i'm not sure if it's a password just for the school or if it is county wide... but there ARE legitimate uses for students to have connected devices, but if someone looked at the traffic i'm sure it's more instagram etc than legit assignment related usage.

I for one DO think they should change the password. rotating it weekly might be a bit much, but one change per semester would seem appropriate.

as for consequences... logistically I don't know how it could be enforced that would make a difference... it would be like trying to stop the Mississippi river by dipping a bucket in, pulling it out, then spending a good chunk of time doing paperwork on the bucket and calling the bucket's parents. (ok weird metaphor)

I refused to write a letter ( OK, fine..I didn't outright refuse, I just said I am too busy) and what's been done is ghost writing from the student himself and then he had my boss sign it because, let's face it, the signature from someone who is already well established holds more weight. My boss is never around, he is too busy.

I am deeply disturbed at the embellishment of the accomplishments the student claimed to have achieved in the short amount of time and taking credit for a very important arm of the project that I did, that he never touched, or even understood the concept. I am now angry.

I can't undo the letter, but I will do the right thing for all the other schools he is applying for.
