Both he and the producers acknowledged that they wished they had used them more but it was harder to get them to cooperate like they wanted or something so they just didn't use them so much. I don't know whether that will be how it is going forward or if they will try and use some CGI or what.

well they probably wanted to budget their money on other things (set, actors, props, etc) than spending on their Season 1 funds on CGI'ing wolves like a twilight movie. Can't blame them.
