for my upcoming rentals i was going to use http://lensrentals.com but went with some local guys here http://aperturent.com instead due to it being a ton cheaper - a friend of mine has 2 rentals from them and is over in europe right now - so far great reviews

Hey guys. I'm in China, and I'm looking at lenses. I found a store that sells Pentax lenses.
Anyway. I can get a Tamron AF 70-300 mm, f4-5.6 lens. It has a Macro mode. The guy said it was 1500 rmb (~220 USD), but I'm pretty sure I can knock him down. I did try the lens, and it is definitely legit. However, according to this review of it:
http://www.photozone.de/pentax/281-tamron-af-70-300mm-f4-56-ld-di-macro-pentax-k-review--lab-test-report
It's exhibits obvious chromatic aberrations at 200 mm-300 mm, which seems like a bit of a problem to me. Additionally, the lens can be had for 185 off of Amazon (which is cheaper than e-bay).
The second option is getting an actual Pentax lens, a 55-200 mm (I have an 18-55 mm, f3.5-5.6), f4-5.6. I also tried out this lens, and I like it as well. I don't know if this is the ED lens or not, as the box was in Chinese, and after getting back and looking up the lens, I think it is an ED lens, but I can visually see if it is (a friend showed me the difference in an ED lens and a non-ED lens). The guy started at 1200 RMB, which is about 175 USD (I think the lens normally goes for 220, new. I'm not sure how much it can go for used, though). I feel that I could possibly knock him down to 1100 RMB, which would make it about 150 USD.
So, what do you guys think?
Would you go for the Tameron, take the extra focal length, yet worse image quality (potentially), or go with the Pentax lens? 6/12/2010 8:12:26 AM |

So I have been debating for a while on getting a DSLR camera and have been looking at the Nikon D5000. I will likely purchase through Amazon as I have a points card through them so at least it will help offset the cost a bit haha. Ive looked at just the camera with one lens as well as whole kits such as http://www.amazon.com/Nikon-3-5-5-6G-55-200mm-Zoom-Nikkor-Accessory/dp/B002ALUOOO/ref=tag_dpp_lp_edpp_ttl_in Anyone have any opinions on where I should start in this search 6/14/2010 10:21:37 AM |

...dpreviews.com or CNET would be a good call. I love my Nikon D3000, so I'm sure you'll like the D5000. The reviews have been great for both cameras though. 6/14/2010 1:20:51 PM |

^^^ Personally, if I was ok with the price on that kit, I would upgrade to a D90 (used or refurb maybe) or Canon T2i. The D5000 is (from what I've read) a great camera but the other 2 are definite improvements and have better kit lenses.
Regardless, I would skip the kits unless you really WANTED all the stuff that came with it and weren't willing to spend more. Everything is the kit is pretty much subpar quality. The SD card is (most likely) a Class 2 or 4 and you want a Class 6 for the video capabilities of the D5000. The tripod is just plain cheap. The bag is ok but there's definitely better choices. The lens is something I can't testify too since I shoot Canon but there's definitely going to be better ones though they may be more than you want to spend (especially when starting out). Pretty much everything else is going to be a gimmick, junk, or just something that doesn't matter. 6/14/2010 6:38:38 PM |

Thats what I thought looks like I will be best to maybe pickup the camera with the one lens that comes with it and then go from there on what else I decide on. 6/14/2010 7:46:06 PM |

i don't have a canon and have no desire for a lens this big so it really doesn't pertain to me, but...how awful is opteka? i'm betting pretty bad...but they have a 650-1300mm lens for $220, anyway
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B000IMRTFO
it's sold through 47th street photo, so you could go through bing (while it still lasts!) for the same price with free shipping, but with 8% cash back...you also get paypal bucks
seems to be not awful for right around $200

i'm not sure which iteration of the 50mm f/1.4 mine is, though...a google image search doesn't show me one like this, but given its weight and all-metal construction, i'm thinking gen1 or gen2...it was only $40, in any case
