^ No. I wasn't even looking through the viewfinder. I could only put the lens in a little area through the window, as there was a window net over the window. I actually cropped out the bar that I looked through.

okay, a couple of questions for those of you with more experience and knowledge than myself (which is most of you )

i'll be in switzerland and italy in less than two months and i'd like to take only 3 lenses with me for the sake of portability...i'm not opposed to buying (or renting) another lens (or two) if the collective opinion is that what i have isn't good enough (which it likely isn't, aside from the 50mm, they're all pretty standard)...i figure i'd rather spend the extra cash and be happy with my pictures than cheap out and wish they were better

nikkor DX 18-105mm f/3.5-5.6G ED AF-S VR
quantaray 28-90mm f/3.3-5.6 D
nikkor-s 50mm f/1.4
quantaray 100-300mm f/4.5-6.7 D

i'll be in the alps and luzern while in switzerland, and italy will be lake como, la spezia, and venice (just to give you an idea of what i'll be taking pictures of)...i figure the 18-105mm is a decent all-around lens, and the 50mm f/1.4 will be nice to have...is the 100-300mm lens worth taking?

okay, now for the second question...anyone have any experience with GPS add-ons? i'm a data freak - i shoot in RAW (memory cards and hard drive storage is cheap, so why not?) and considering how often i take pictures while backpacking, i think i'd really like to have the GPS coordinates in the EXIF data (especially since most of our time in switzerland will be in more isolated places)

i know there's the nikon GP-1 unit, but like all nikon accessories, it's retarded expensive

$95 will get you this (http://cgi.ebay.com/GPS-Connection-Kit-Nikon-D90-D5000-/220622973343) which, as far as i can tell, is just a pc-mobile PGN9 (http://pc-mobile.net/nikongps.htm)

i can't come up with any reason why the di-GPS Mini 3L-S90 (http://www.dawntech.hk/di-GPS/mini_3l.htm) or the promote GPS-N-90 (http://www.adorama.com/ICDPGPSN90.html) are worth their $150 pricetags

the columbus nGPS is nice because it's only $96 and comes with cables for all GPS-capable nikons (http://cgi.ebay.com/Columbus-nGPS-GPS-and-Remote-Set-Nikon-DSLR-/260636024377) but i don't know anything about the MTK chip (the others seem to use the sirf star 3 chip)

the solmeta geotagger N2 is $160 (http://www.solmeta.com/product_pro.asp?pic_id=139) but pretty nice because it has an internal battery and will switch to camera power when the battery is low...the internal battery is nice because it keeps the signal and so you don't have to wait for it to acquire when you turn off the camera...it also comes with cables for all nikons

The one thing that would make me cautious about the 100-300 is the f values. It would be a great lens to have if you're taking pictures with a tripod. But if you're at 300mm and you're not using a tripod, I just think you might have some trouble having at least a 300ms exposure time. I would want something like a 500ms exposure time, but I'm cautious like that. If you plan to be hiking and taking pictures, you may not be able to hold the camera that still as you normally would be able to.

If you're can get a lens that is below a f/5.6 at 300 mm, I would more comfortable than that.

What is your f value at 200 mm? 5.6? I know that there are 70-300mm with f/4-5.6. I was looking at a tamron lens for my Pentex that was that, and it was about 170 USD new. Surely, you should have no problems renting a 100-300mm with a f/4-5.6, or maybe even better. I've never tried renting a lens before.

That's just my opinion. I'm not a professional by any means, and I don't have much experience. But I just have a feeling the 100-300mm isn't very useful at 300 mm without a tripod.

I like the picture. It's well framed and, personally, I like the lens flare. For me, to make the picture better, there could be more foreground light and more detail in the face. I'm generally not a big fan of the "light behind subject silhouette" as a form of art, but that's just a personal opinion.

At what aperture were you shooting? The bokeh looks cool.

since y'all were largely useless in determining the best geotagging solution, i just did my own homework

i think i'm going to get the Navin miniHomer for $50 (shipped)
- MTK II GPS chipset (66 channels, -165dBm sensitivity, very low power consumption)
- IPX6 waterproof (no immersion, but it can be rained on or splashed)
- export to KML, KMZ, GPX, CSV, NMEA formats
- digital compass
- clock (i actually care about this, believe it or not)
- displays distance traveled on-screen (nice for backpacking)
- 5 user-settable POIs (that you can then navigate to from your current location or store for later)
- 250,000 data points (about 60 hours at 1s interval)
- 12-14 hours in data logging mode
- can be used as a real-time receiver on a laptop

the disadvantages as i see them are:
- no user-replaceable battery
- AFAIK, you have to use the included software to change interval settings and convert the proprietary data format to one of the standards
- if i can't replace the battery myself, i'd rather have IPX7 (immersible)
- battery life is only "meh"

all-in-all, though, seems to be a pretty good solution when bundled with the free software that's available out there for tagging photos...i should even be able to tag my RAW/DNG files

now...do i get black or yellow?

to piggyback an earlier post, is it worth getting CS5 if it can be had for a reasonable (sub $200) price tag? Actually...forgetting the cost all together is it worth having as a primary photo editor if trying to do more than adjust exposures and saturation? Obviously PSE is cheaper and the alternative.

Why not just use something like Gimp? I find it to be full featured. Maybe Photoshop has an extra filter or two. But Gimp is continually being updated and is free!

why not shoot in color and manipulate in photoshop using the channel mixer.... no real need for colored filters when shooting B&W digital.

Even in the digital age, some people are still purists. If I can avoid using photoshop, I do too. I have a couple color filters I use for B&W photography without using photoshop. To each his own.

Yea, I could have shot without the filter and spent time in photoshop jacking the contrast and playing with levels, but that isn't necessary with the filter.
