I hope in the next/last episode Robb gets all the Starks/Freys pumped up by having them start jumping and then along with it go "ooooooooooooo" and get louder like "OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOH" and then switch to "PACK! PACK! PACK! PACK! OOOOOO PACK! PACK! PACK! PACK! OOOOOOOOOOOO! POWER PACK! POWER PACK! BACK THE PACK!" and then play a loud rockin rap song or somethin. i think it would get things crazy.
Then I hope he captures Joffrey and lets Arya take his head. 6/12/2011 10:13:55 PM |

LOL, I love HBO's solution to saving money and not showing the battle with Tywin's forces versus Robb's diversion army. Taking a nod from Tolkien's own half-man character at the BOFA
This was definitely an episode where I wish I could have watched for the first time without having read the books. What did non-readers think of the end of this episode?

CalledToArms said it great from the first page:
Quote : | "For those of you who don't know much about the show, some more information has been posted on HBO's site along with some new videos.
Please note that while this book series is classified as "fantasy," the story is definitely not your standard high fantasy story that many consider to be fairly cheesy. It is a very gritty, dark, bloody, and well written story that reflects more on the corruption, drama, and politics in feudal Europe than something like Lord of the Rings. The author is not afraid to kill off any character you might attach yourself to and there is no black vs white or clearly defined good vs evil; you'll find yourself rooting for people on multiple sides of the conflict. If they do the story justice (which I have faith in HBO to do), I think a lot of you will be listing this as one of your favorite currently-running TV shows come next year." |

Yeah Ned's death + the death of Viserys really caught me off guard. Who was the dude that was holding Arya at the end? Ned looked at him like he knew him and I think he looked kind of familiar. Was he maybe a member of the Night's Watch?
Also lol at the part when Robb asked if any of the Frey girls were decent looking at Theon smirked.
I would really have liked to have seen the battle that Tyrion was supposed to be in rather than them taking the easy way out by just knocking him out. 6/13/2011 12:14:27 AM |

jeez what an episode. I was totally not expecting Ned Stark's death, as I thought Viserys's or even King Robert's (or perhaps Drago??) would be the season's big kills but I think it was a great twist. My gf and literally sat jaws dropped for the entire credits in silence after it happened. definitely picking up the books now.

Glad the non-readers were shocked. I remember when the show hadn't even started yet. HBO producers and director's and even GRRM said shit like "blah blah blah the main character of the story, Ned Stark, blah blah blah". I knew they were setting people up for this.
Also, Shae was cast very poorly in my opinion. I always pictured more of a girl, and not a woman.
Obligatory mention of no wolves. Seriously how hard is it to have a Tamaskan with a bloody snout running next to Robb for 5 seconds at the end of Whispering Wood. The answer is not hard at all. The argument that they were hard to work with is bullshit. And anyone who says that the wolves are not important (read: skokiaan can fuck off. If you actually payed attention to the books you would know that wasn't true. 6/13/2011 8:30:56 AM |

Yes to the first. To the 2nd, I'll have to watch the episode again...I think you are right. I'm pretty sure in the books he is the Great-Great Uncle, however I think they skipped over one generation of sons in the succession he quoted last night so maybe they changed it in the show. (Not trying to contrast the book vs show, just showing why I'm hesitant to answer 100% until I re-watch the episode).

not buying it. sacrificing honor to keep your daughters safe? too cliche, dude needed to man up and not lie out of his ass to provide some semblance of safety
also their "reaction"? since when has either of those two liars ever had an ounce of compassion? Ned had nothing to go on in the dungeon except Varys' word, apparently he wasn't sure enough about Joffrey's direction as he should have been, especially for the Master of Whispers6/13/2011 9:11:44 AM |

Even Varys, the master of whispers, can't know what Joffrey has inside his head. Like I said, even Cersei was surprised at what her son did when she let his leash slack for a second. She misjudged her own son and did not want Ned killed. She would have rather had Ned alive and lame than dead (knowing the chaos that would cause).

^^You're forgetting that the Starks currently hold Jaime Lannister, a Lannister that both Tywin and Cersei care very much about.
Offing Eddard was a rash move that pretty much guarantees that Stark will attack King's Landing. (and/or proclaim himself King in the North and totally usurp the Kingdom's rule over Westeros [I can say this right, it was in the previews]) It was a bargaining chip that Joffrey flushed down the toilet. It has a good chance of fucking over Varys, Littlefinger, and all of the Lannisters, most immediately Jaime.
Also, that was kind of the point of GRRM's writing. Take the hero and not only kill him, but humiliate him, making him abandon his honor, and THEN kill him.

telling the truth would have doomed his daughters, he was trying to keep the peace and keep his daughters safe. right now sansa is a prisoner as much as him and Jaime are, if he goes to the wall and it is enough to placate everyone his daughters have a chance of leaving with their freedom.6/13/2011 9:37:07 AM |

^yes and at this point he has realized his own defeat and that he needs to do whatever can possibly save anyone else in his family. Regardless of whether he dies or goes to the wall stripped of titles his honor as a Lord is shot in the eyes of many. If Cersei's plan (which I believe it was) was to get rid of Ned in the cleanest way possible at this point (ie not killing him in front of thousands, simply stripping him of his honor and sending him to the wall) she would be stupid to have Arya or Sansa killed after that, meaning his confessing would actually save his daughters potentially. 6/13/2011 9:48:34 AM |

ned's actions seemed pretty reasonable to me. he knew that if he didn't confess that it would have serious consequences for his children, even if it meant he had to dishonor his own name. he knew his life was over anyway, whether he was on the wall or beheaded, so when he weighed having honor against keeping his children safe he chose to keep his kids safe.

cersei and varys were upset because they knew joffrey's unnecessary cruelty would likely incite more violence and instability. the only person who was upset for sentimental reasons was Sansa.6/13/2011 9:52:11 AM |

Also, WRT to the significance of Lord Commander Mormont giving John Snow his family sword, I don't think they've mentioned it on the show, but there are about 200 Valyrian steel blades left in the entire world (Valyria was mysteriously wiped out centuries ago and their sword making techniques died with them). That's one of the reasons why, earlier in the season, it was so remarkable that some hillbilly cutthroat used a Valyrian steel knife in his attempt to kill Bran Stark. So, back to Mormont and John Snow, it is a HUGE deal to give one of those things away--they're beyond priceless. It wasn't just a family heirloom; it's one of the most valuable pieces of weaponry in the world.
Also, I don't think they mentioned this, but it is, fittingly, a "bastard sword", which means that it's bigger than a one-handed sword but smaller than a two-handed sword.] 6/13/2011 12:07:49 PM |

That scene of Syrio fending off the guards with a wooden sword was definitely one of my favorites in the book, and it didn't disappoint in the show.
