I used to say the same shit and feel the same way, until I actually owned a nice watch.once you own one you really see the difference. So go borrow a nice watch and see if you still feel the same way.

I have been looking at breitlings for a while now. I have never been the type to wear a watch but this will be a late wedding gift for me and I want to be able to hand something down to my children. i just think the engineering behind an automatic movement is really cool. my kid would look at me like i have 10 heads if i handed him 16 broken fossil watches.
11/10/2010 7:53:24 PM
^ my grandfather gave me his old school Rolex GMT. it's definitely my most prized possession. from a grandsons point of view i strongly encourage you to do this.my job involves quite a bit of chemical work and other activity that keeps me from wearing it often. instead i picked up this, which i wear to work, running, snowboarding, swimming...you name it.
11/11/2010 10:20:55 AM
i thought i would ease in to a watch collection so i picked this up to wear day to day.

This is basically the same watch I have:I absolutely love it. Keeps great time and I will wear it all the time doing whatever and it still looks as new as the day I got it. This was my first nice watch other than a citizen and after realizing the difference I can't see myself getting something other than a Tag, it just really impressed me. I am sure other brands are really good as well but I just can't think of a negative about this one.

To be fair, the Swatch Group makes Swatch, Flik Flak, Mido, Tissot, Calvin Klein, Certina, Pierre Balmain, Hamilton, Rado, Omega SA, Longines, Union Glashütte, Breguet, Blancpain, Jaquet Droz, Glashütte Original, Léon Hatot, Tiffany & Co., and Endura

I've been wanting the James Bond shutter watch.I don't see it anymore, but it is a metal watch with a lever that opens the shutter. It was nice.

That might be the one I go with. I like it much better than the older Victorinoxs. Don't know if I want to pay the premium though. Opinions?
11/18/2010 11:24:57 AM
^^^ really nice watch! will hold up well, but what is the price?
11/18/2010 2:29:50 PM
http://www.amazon.com/Victorinox-Swiss-Army-241424-Master/dp/B003SFMIFE$595 on Amazon but if you buy a watch from Amazon it doesn't come with the Victorinox warranty but I think they offer a similar warranty so what's the difference? Victorinox one is only 3 years anyway. think the Amazon one is 2. If I actually did find an official retailer with this watch (I'll probably look for one in Charlotte so I can check out the watch before I buy it) it would probably be like $1000. Is the difference in price simply because it's not an authorized Victorinox dealer? Negatives to not buying from an authorized Victorinox dealer?
11/18/2010 2:44:35 PM
I posted this in the other thread, but this is my dream watch. It is a Pierre DeRoche Splitrock. I have told my wife I plan to have this in a couple of years to offset the tiffany ring
11/18/2010 2:45:03 PM
Ok looks like that watch is quite new and that seller that is selling it for $595 offers a one year warranty for it versus the 3 you get with Victorinox. Do these watches go bad often? Within first year? Save $500 and get it from an unauthorized dealer?
11/18/2010 3:20:42 PM
save the money, I have never ever heard of them going bad. Also the manufacter should be very helpful if there is a problem. I sold these watches and they lasted 10-20 yrs.
11/18/2010 3:38:06 PM
11/18/2010 3:42:38 PM
Victorinox may not help. Rememeber most of the grey market stuff may be cheaper but the company may not see it as a valid watch. Grey market, especially on higher end watches sometimes have the serial numbers removed. this is a quartz movement. No worries. Buy it cheap. Nothing to really break with normal use and conditions.
11/18/2010 4:32:32 PM
In the rare rare case something happens let me know, I will tell ya what to do.
11/18/2010 5:02:33 PM
11/18/2010 5:07:22 PM
$599 from jomashop.com with 3 yr. warranty. This place is the most reccomended online new watch seller, and I hear good things about them.
11/18/2010 5:17:16 PM
^sweet thanks. http://www.jomashop.com/swiss-army-mens-watch-v251424.htmlMight do that. Says serial intact and everything. But still, how do they sell them for so cheap? I don't understand it. What am I gaining by spending almost twice as much for one from an authorized dealer?
11/18/2010 5:23:39 PM
there is a huge markup on watches. They are probably still 20% above the invoice/wholesale price.
11/18/2010 5:29:58 PM
Ok well I feel better about this then. Kind of like the markup on Scotch? I can get Glenlivet for $4.5 at my favorite pool hall or $18 uptown. heh.
11/18/2010 5:35:18 PM
11/18/2010 5:37:18 PM
Thanks for the heads up. So if I'm still getting a 3 year warranty from Jomashop similar to the 3 year warranty from Victorinox then there's really no difference? Repair/maintenance is going to be the same price after either 3 year warranty irregardless of where I get it?
11/18/2010 5:48:07 PM
You may want to check with Baileys Jewelry in Cameron Village. They are a Victorinox retailer. Just tell them that you can get it from a reputable retailer online for $599 and ask if they will price match. You might be surprised at what they'll do for you.Their service is absolutely great. As an example, the spring bar on my Breitling started popping out at random times a few months ago. Neither they nor I could see any defect in it, but they replaced it and it has never popped out since. No charge and they offered me a coke while I waited.
11/18/2010 6:22:11 PM
just a coke? no cookies?
11/18/2010 6:31:09 PM
^^In Charlotte but that's a good idea. I'm going to go around to the authorized dealers and see if they have that watch. I know it's new so I'm hoping someone has it. Want to check it out before I buy it.
11/18/2010 6:47:18 PM
^^ Lol...pretty sure there were snacks too now that you mention it. I just got a bottle of Coke and walked around the showroom floor though. Just pointing out that they do not treat you like a jewelry store in the mall when you go there.[Edited on November 18, 2010 at 10:03 PM. Reason : l]

Also, if you need your battery changed, go to Bailey's. I went the other day because I saw they were authorized to work on Tags and it was the closest place to me and when I went to pick it up they told me there was no charge but I could make as donation to the charity they were sponsoring.
11/19/2010 7:34:56 AM
^ Yeah, that's nice, but the last battery I got there barely lasted a year and I think I gave a $15 donation. Could have just been a fluke, but I wonder if they didn't stick a used battery or the cheapest battery made in there.
11/19/2010 8:52:43 AM
I really like this one:http://www.victorinox.com/product/3/302/241460Cheapest I could find is $1800. Haha. http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/41cw0Ha67ML._SL500_AA300_.jpgHot.
11/19/2010 10:19:44 AM
Maybe Ive just never been a watch person or understood the point.. but if Im gonna spend a couple hundred bucks on something I think I'll stick to a phone that can tell me the time and do a whole hell of a lot more than a watch can.
11/19/2010 10:22:49 AM
be careful with getting your batteries changed, even at authorized dealers, and expecting your waterseal to be as functional as beforeat least with tag, as i understand it, the only way for your water seal guarantee to be intact is if you have the battery changed by the factory, which requires shipping it back to switzerland. they'll change the battery, change the gaskets, and do a pressure test. however, this is like $350 instead of the $15 for a battery change locally.. even a tag authorized repair place doesn't count.if you're using it a lot for the type of activity where you'd be submerging it and the like, think about these things before getting a battery operated one... the cost of maintenance was surprisingly high.i just dont understand why anyone would pay like $350 to have the battery changed on a $1300 watch every 4 years or so.
