I have been looking at breitlings for a while now. I have never been the type to wear a watch but this will be a late wedding gift for me and I want to be able to hand something down to my children. i just think the engineering behind an automatic movement is really cool.

my job involves quite a bit of chemical work and other activity that keeps me from wearing it often. instead i picked up this, which i wear to work, running, snowboarding, swimming...you name it.

Men don't wear jewelry. . . . They might wear cuff links on their shirt--and their only real jewelry will probably be a watch. It sort of says something about the man, the different watches. It's a way of saying, This is my taste. This is my style. . . . It's more personal. . . . To me, it's just your private taste, and this is what you like, and when you are living your life, you are representing yourself, you have an apartment or a house, and you buy your furniture and you say, "This is my style, this is who I am." You sort of make your own world that you feel is good. . . .
So I think the watch has a personality all to itself. It's part of your statement about yourself. And then depending on the kind of clothes you wear and where you're going, you might have a sport watch, you might have a dressy watch, you might have a rugged watch or a watch that says something about aviation, whatever it is. So there are so many things that watches move into. And today . . . there is so much creativity in developing of shapes and new materials like matte black, and so watches I find, because they stay with you, you know a watch is very personal, but it's sort of something that you get used to." |

I absolutely love it. Keeps great time and I will wear it all the time doing whatever and it still looks as new as the day I got it. This was my first nice watch other than a citizen and after realizing the difference I can't see myself getting something other than a Tag, it just really impressed me. I am sure other brands are really good as well but I just can't think of a negative about this one. 11/17/2010 3:37:00 PM |

$595 on Amazon but if you buy a watch from Amazon it doesn't come with the Victorinox warranty but I think they offer a similar warranty so what's the difference? Victorinox one is only 3 years anyway. think the Amazon one is 2.
If I actually did find an official retailer with this watch (I'll probably look for one in Charlotte so I can check out the watch before I buy it) it would probably be like $1000.
Is the difference in price simply because it's not an authorized Victorinox dealer?

Ok looks like that watch is quite new and that seller that is selling it for $595 offers a one year warranty for it versus the 3 you get with Victorinox. Do these watches go bad often? Within first year? Save $500 and get it from an unauthorized dealer? 11/18/2010 3:20:42 PM |

save the money, I have never ever heard of them going bad. Also the manufacter should be very helpful if there is a problem. I sold these watches and they lasted 10-20 yrs. 11/18/2010 3:38:06 PM |

You mean Victorinox? If it's out of warranty what could they do to help?
So if I get it from this seller on Amazon it's a one year warranty for $595 compared to like $1000 from an authorized Victorinox dealer for a 3 year warranty. Lets say something did go wrong after the year warranty. Are they hella expensive to fix?
I've been looking for a couple months now and this is the first watch that really stood out and I was immediately like, "i want that watch." All the other ones have been a so-so feeling.11/18/2010 3:42:38 PM |

Victorinox may not help. Rememeber most of the grey market stuff may be cheaper but the company may not see it as a valid watch. Grey market, especially on higher end watches sometimes have the serial numbers removed.
this is a quartz movement. No worries. Buy it cheap. Nothing to really break with normal use and conditions. 11/18/2010 4:32:32 PM |

So grey market is anything that isn't sold by an authorized Victorinox dealer? I want a legit watch with the serial intact.

Quote : | "100% NEW in box factory original Victorinox Swiss Army. Includes its respective manual, and 1 year Watchsensation warranty. " |
Would they still actually take out the watch a modify it? Why would they scratch the serial off? How does Victorinox know you didn't buy it from an authorized dealer?

Two things, Authenticity and Factory support.
Grey market watches are cheaper and here's why: Higher end watches are usually less expensive overseas (price controls). I have seen Rolexes, Omega, and Tag Heuer sold for much cheaper when traveling. Retailers will usually purchase them in bulk at a discount then mark them up slightly and pass the savings on to you. Good deal all around, unless something breaks (rare, but it happens).
If you ever need warranty service, the watch will show up as a South American or an Asian serial number (for example), but if the store you purchased it from does not match it's location information (or is not an authorized retailer) it raises red flags and your warranty will be denied). They will still service your watch of course, they just won't do it for free.
Costco is being sued by Omega for this very issue.
I don't see anything to worry about, but that's just my personal opinion.11/18/2010 5:37:18 PM |
neodata686 All American 11577 Posts user info edit post |
Thanks for the heads up. So if I'm still getting a 3 year warranty from Jomashop similar to the 3 year warranty from Victorinox then there's really no difference? Repair/maintenance is going to be the same price after either 3 year warranty irregardless of where I get it? 11/18/2010 5:48:07 PM |

You may want to check with Baileys Jewelry in Cameron Village. They are a Victorinox retailer. Just tell them that you can get it from a reputable retailer online for $599 and ask if they will price match. You might be surprised at what they'll do for you.
Their service is absolutely great. As an example, the spring bar on my Breitling started popping out at random times a few months ago. Neither they nor I could see any defect in it, but they replaced it and it has never popped out since. No charge and they offered me a coke while I waited. 11/18/2010 6:22:11 PM |

Also, if you need your battery changed, go to Bailey's. ^ Yeah, that's nice, but the last battery I got there barely lasted a year and I think I gave a $15 donation. Could have just been a fluke, but I wonder if they didn't stick a used battery or the cheapest battery made in there. 11/19/2010 8:52:43 AM |

be careful with getting your batteries changed, even at authorized dealers, and expecting your waterseal to be as functional as before
at least with tag, as i understand it, the only way for your water seal guarantee to be intact is if you have the battery changed by the factory, which requires shipping it back to switzerland. they'll change the battery, change the gaskets, and do a pressure test.
however, this is like $350 instead of the $15 for a battery change locally.. even a tag authorized repair place doesn't count.
if you're using it a lot for the type of activity where you'd be submerging it and the like, think about these things before getting a battery operated one... the cost of maintenance was surprisingly high.
i just dont understand why anyone would pay like $350 to have the battery changed on a $1300 watch every 4 years or so. 11/19/2010 10:31:42 AM |
