Ehh. Contracts don’t mean shit. If we want to fire him, we’ll find the buyout money and fire him. It’s not my money so I don’t really care that much.
(But I agree the timing doesn’t feel great)

How tf is it Gott's fault? The contract was changed last summer. It's our "AD of the year" giving out free extensions with no competition for our coach.3/17/2022 7:56:57 PM |

The contract extension was based on the NCAA cloud. So that’s why you could blame Gott for putting us in that position. 3/17/2022 8:21:18 PM |

It's gottfireds fault because he got us into this whole mess by paying to suck with DSJ. If he doesn't do that and just gets fired for being a shitty coach, this clause never gets put in a contract 3/17/2022 8:21:42 PM |

Corrigan had the same extension language in his contract as well. Corrigan and his agent could’ve lobbied for that assurance from the University. And I’d imagine Keatts and his agent would seek similar assurances. It kinda makes sense on paper. But obviously looks bad after such a bad season.

I know what it was based on, but why in the fuck are we handing out favors? Our AD decided to bid against himself after a down year. Now, it's not clear if this is an actual extension or an option and whose option is it. Ultimately, the only way it's gonna matter is if it raises the buyout to an extent where we are bargain hunting again for a coach after Keatts shits the bed next year.
But fuck Gott's cheating ass too.
^I read that part too... It makes sense with Corrigan because it was his original contract and we were trying to recruit him as AD to take over for Yow. As far as I can tell, we basically just gave it to Keatts after a down year last year and no upward trajectory of the program and no competition trying to lure Keatts away.

Doesn’t Keats have the leverage in that situation? He says “what’s keeping me at a school that’s about to go on probation?” Don’t view Keatts through a current lens. View him through the lens of 2021. He had been to 1 NCAAT, snubbed for a second one, and would’ve made a third if not for Covid before having his first down year. He hadn’t posted a sub .500 ACC record at that point. And K and Roy were retiring. I think it’s fair to think KK had some leverage in that situation.
I don’t think that the money is so much that it’ll really matter in the grand scheme.
So it sounds like KK himself is the one that can choose to exercise the option. Which definitely feels weird if it’s as simple as him just saying “yes please”. Because of course he would take that. So I’m wondering if there’s something else to it as far as that goes.

I guess you and I have a different definition of leverage. Keatts was coming off missing the NCAAs last year with a bare cupboard going forward. (Shak had just transferred. No way to guess Seabron would develop the way he did. Hell, Bates was even kinda sketchy whether he was coming back at that point). Even if you buy the idea that he was still being looked at as a good coach at the time instead of the trainwreck most seem him as now, he was not being courted by other jobs. Keatts was still an unproven mid-major winner who wasn't going anywhere. What's keeping him? His deal--without the extension--already took him through to '24. He was at the highest paying (and prestige) job he has had in his career (by a long shot). What leverage did he have to get an extension?
This seems more like Boo recognizing the difficulty the NCAA stuff was having on Keatts and giving him the same language in his contract that he himself had....basically being a nice guy. And I could even talk myself into the fact that that sort of gesture may pay dividends in the future giving us the reputation that we take care of our coaches. You cannot tell me that Keatts had any sort of leverage or that we needed to give him that extension option last summer.

It’s impossible to say how it played out and who approached who since we don’t really know how negotiations went. I just think we’d view this a lot differently if it had been announced last summer vs now. And we knew by June that Bates was coming back. 3/18/2022 9:17:02 AM |

^^^^ just looked through the recruiting thread. I saw you I express skepticism that Dillingham would ever play at State. I didn’t see anybody call that a terrible opinion.
Makes sense for him to decomitt. We suck. Keatts might not be the coach here in 2023 m anyways. He could definitely go play for a title contender.

Assuming KK would be fired next year, Dillingham decomitting was probably inevitable. But with a decent season next year and knowing Dillingham was committed, that class could’ve been really great and kept KK around another year.
If you want KK fired this might speed it up at least lol 3/19/2022 3:22:35 PM |

Bigger issue, imo, is just talent evaluation. There’s obviously been a couple diamonds he’s found and developed (Seabron, Bates, T come to mind). But far too many guys have just not been ACC level players. The guys that have transferred out have sucked. The guys that have transferred in - since the initial class of Freeman, Daniels, Bryce - have all been meh at best players. 3/19/2022 9:03:52 PM |

Also. We went 11-21 last year. As far as I’m concerned, they can all leave and we can start over with a whole new roster. A team as bad as we were last year doesn’t have any irreplaceable players.
^right. The better point is that he’s just flat out missed with transfer and recruits. Too many dudes that simply weren’t ACC caliber that he brought in 4/13/2022 11:23:34 AM |
