Anyone help me out with a new suggestion for a series to read?
I've read through the Vampire Earth series from EE Knight recently. Most everything else has just been a standalone book.
I'm a fan of post-apocalyptic stuff mostly. Swords and sorcery really isn't my thing, but the Dresden books by Jim Butcher did keep me entertained through about 4 of them. 5/8/2011 3:30:32 PM |

I'm reading book 1 of the Malazan series now. Gardens of the Moon.
It's alright but it's not up to snuff with the ASoIaF books like I was led to believe.
I find that the less I have to ask "Why doesn't he/she/they just...." the better a story is. If a story can still be dramatic and suspenseful when the characters are written as logical and intelligent human beings then it's normally a good story. Malazan isn't doing that so far.

i've not been especially impressed by this trilogy...it's not bad by any means, but i don't have any trouble putting it down...just started this one, though, so maybe it'll get really good really fast

Just finished this. I've known the backstory for a while, but was surprised at how many interesting characters popped up. And I did find it pretty hilarious how Nike is the evil super villain in this book.

^^ yeah, it's been on my list for a while now...i expected more (again, not BAD at all, it's just that i've become used to reading books that i couldn't wait to pick back up again)
i feel like you and i have pretty similar taste in books, so when you get around to it, i'll be interested to hear your take 5/9/2011 8:25:26 AM |

Need some new fantasy to read. Any suggestions?
I think I'm finally going to try out the The Farseer trilogy. 5/10/2011 9:02:14 AM |

So, I enjoyed the Sweet Valley books when I was young, really young, like 10. So, I thought, "hey, why not try out the new book?"
It was quite possibly the worst book I've ever read. It's a waste of time, and ruins what little bit of childhood nostalgia I had for the original books. Yes, I should have known before I picked it up that it wasn't going to be award winning, but I did expect just a little bit more! At least a good brain candy novel--but it didn't even meet up with that expectation!!

Finally started reading American Gods. Just haven't gotten around to it. Got about 10% through the book last night. I was like, WTF, with some of the stuff. Great start though. Should be a quick read. 5/12/2011 9:36:55 AM |

Finished the Night Angel trilogy a couple of weeks ago. The third book wrapped up things nicely though I enjoyed the first two more.
Since then I've read a couple of Star Wars books (Red Harvest & Deceived). Not the best Star Wars books but I read about every one they publish. Death Troopers was better than Red Harvest. Deceived is the second of the books leading into "Star Wars: The Old Republic" MMO that should be out this fall. It was more interesting than the first one (Fatal Alliance).
Just started Dead Reckoning yesterday.

all-in-all, abercrombie's first law trilogy was just okay...i don't know, it seemed flat somehow
having never read anything by tad williams before, i picked up shadowmarch back when it was new and none of the other books were out (and so i've never read the rest of the series)...picked it up again a couple of weeks ago

^^Too much like work? Now I haven't read that book in particular, but I find McCullough to be one of the most readable in the history genre. Tends to keep it interesting and not get too dry. Hmm.
I've been on a small James Patterson bender--5 out of my last 6 books have been The Midnight Club, Kiss The Girls, Along Came A Spider, Pop Goes The Weasel, and currently Roses Are Red. Not particularly deep, but entertaining. 6/8/2011 11:20:57 AM |

^ I agree about McCullough and parts are very interesting, however, he delves into partisan politics of the New York State House in 1870's for long periods of time, it gets a little tedious. 6/8/2011 11:57:38 AM |
