35 Years of Winter!!!
^ totally agree. I love how GRRM dedicates each chapter to a specific character's POV.

Yeah and with the tv show you kind of miss out on that. Every chapter you're looking forward to another story picking back up. The show attempts to do it but it just doesn't feel the same. 4/9/2012 7:36:30 PM |

I was watching with my wife who hasn't read the books and had to pause it 5 or 10 times to explain what was happening. I was just as confused reading the books, honestly, for any of the parts with new episodes.
Also, re: people complaining about Asha's looks, shut the fuck up. There's plenty of eye candy on this show to start with, and as ugly as Theon is, I wouldn't expect his sister to be creating any major boner jams.
Note: just realized the actor is Lily Allen's brother, I take it all back.4/9/2012 7:42:00 PM |

^ haha.
But seriously, for some reason I never pictured Asha as being super attractive. Certainly not ugly and not similar looking to the girl they cast, but not that attractive. Also, not every girl they cast has to be eye-candy or look like some uber-fan's deviant art spank bank drawing. Honestly, most movies/tv shows usually cast too many girls that are too attractive in these kinds of stories. 4/9/2012 7:55:44 PM |

Holy mother of fuck this thread is retarded. Can't even believe some of the stuff people are whining/arguing about.
Anyway, this show rules. Even if you haven't read the books, I honestly can't understand what anyone would be confused about with that episode; there are a lot of characters to follow, yeah, but I thought all the plot developments were pretty damn straightforward (not to mention awesome). Can't wait to see the developments from the Iron Islands this season.
edit: Also I agree, more naked Ros. Who cares whether she was in the books or not, she's fucking hot. Although I have a suspicion Littlefinger might pull some shit with her soon after that last episode. The fact that she isn't in the books makes her character awfully expendable.

I really don't care too much about the fact that she wasn't in the books; I'm ok with small changes to the story as long as they make sense for the sake of the TV show. However, her story has just been boring and takes up screen-time. So far it just seems like a pointless add when they have cut things that actually have some importance. Obviously at this point they still have time to make something of her story line, but I can't quite figure out what purpose they intend for her to serve.
Also, her simply being "hot" (I personally don't think so but that's just personal taste) doesn't warrant her being on the show. There are plenty of other places to see women you find attractive without clothes on. Even if I did find her attractive, I'd say the same.
Anyway, the Ros thing doesn't affect the show for me as she has served a pretty small part and I have loved their adaptation as a whole. I'd just rather she wasn't there.

no worries. It's been awhile since I have read ACOK now too, but it seems that they are treating Tyrion and Shae's relationship back in KL a little differently than in the books (as in she was hiding in a brothel I thought). Perhaps they will utilize Ros in some way with that story line? I dono. It wasn't a big detail in the story but I don't want to say too much regardless.

Got the girlfriend on board after watching the first two episodes of Season 1 last night. The trick was to compare it to Ken Follet's "Pillars of the Earth"...which is one of her favorite books. Only problem is that I feel like I have to research episodes before they happen. I'm pretty good at picking up on stuff in shows like these, but even I struggled a bit in the first two episodes. The gf would have been COMPLETELY lost if I hadn't had prior knowledge to what was going on and was explaining things to here during the episode.
Does it get better as things unfold and the stories start to tie together? I get a little worried when I read that people are still struggling with stuff in Season 2. 4/10/2012 1:07:06 PM |

I don't really get the tough to follow stuff. I guess it can be a little laborious to watch at times because there is a lot of dialogue, but I feel like I understand everything going on. Although, i don't know everyone's name. I think that's because there are so many characters and they have unusual names. But I know who is who so to speak and what is going on. 4/10/2012 2:46:20 PM |

I think its awesome that folks want to wait on reading ahead because they want the show to be a surprise;
however, as we get further into the 2nd and ESPECIALLY 3rd books, I'm afraid some of you are going to eventually see some MAJOR spoilers and it might ruin your buzz before you see the corresponding episode. We're talking Snape Kills Dumbledore type spoilers. If you're concerned about that, I'd say go ahead and read the books. But to each his own.] 4/10/2012 3:03:34 PM |

^^^ wait.. what? I'm having a tough time following what you're saying (maybe there's a "not" or something missing in there?). I'm genuinely curious because I intend to start reading the books.
are you saying that people should go ahead and read the books if they're concerned about spoilers from the show? -- I actually don't understand this at all since it's a no brainer that a show or movie will have spoilers for a book. --- Or are you saying that they should hold off on reading because the big "events" (snape kills dumbledore type stuff) could make the show less interesting until it catches up to some of those things? 4/10/2012 4:25:24 PM |

Inevitably there is going to be some douche or some random ignorant person that will post something in here or on Facebook without a spoiler tag that will reveal a major surprise part of the story. I was reading the books between the first and second TV series and this happened to me. I was pretty pissed. 4/10/2012 5:11:30 PM |

Personally, I'm going to read however quickly I can naturally get through them regardless of the show because I'm interested in the story (well, hopefully that will hold true while reading). I'd potentially have to wait years to get through as much of the story in tv format as i could in months of reading the books (simply because of season lenths, production time, etc.). 4/10/2012 6:03:01 PM |

I might be forgetting some characters, but Ros and Arya are the best female characters in the show.
All the others are really poorly acted or generic. Cersei was a big deal in the books, but she ain't shit in the TV show. Same with platinum blonde girl.

pretty much every scene she is in is just an excuse to see tits while we learn about someone else, it isnt like she has her own story.

just started reading Book 1 last night and am really enjoying it. One of the main reasons was because I wanted to spend more time with the characters than the show allows.
I reached the point of Ned leaving for Kings Landing and so far the TV show seems to have really followed the book closely. Does book one start to really get deeper with the characters and into things the show left out completely at some point? Or am I basically reviewing things that happened in season one with slightly more detail?] 4/11/2012 8:45:08 AM |

I think some of the keys to the whole story are embedded in Ned's flashbacks about the Tower of Joy and other small items like that which they completely skipped over in the show (although the fact that they chose to cut them could also mean that those were just red herrings in the book as well). In general, I do think it is worth reading, even if you read behind the show because as much as I love the show, the story and the character development is definitely better in the books. 4/11/2012 8:51:04 AM |
