The only reason he is not fired this year is because we went to the final 4 last year. So fall 2026 is realistically the beginning of rebuilding, barring unforeseen circumstances(our players being ballers no matter the coach)

Our NIL budget for basketball is only like $1.5 million, while the top spenders in the conference (Duke/UL/etc) are $5+ million range IIRC

To be fair, when your donor money is at the bottom end of the conference/P5 schools you aren't going to be able to get the elite talent.

And as much as no one wants to hear it, that's where we are. It's the cold, hard truth. Last year was a fun anomaly but in this era of uncapped above-board player payment we are going to be at the bottom no matter who is coaching.

It's not perfect but it's the best thing i can find. It uses data from the knight commission and ranks all the public schools by athletic department donations from 2005-2022. Of all the current ACC schools, we are dead last. So at best we are ahead of a few private schools and likely behind many of them as well.

It is logical to assume that NIL donations would not be far out of line with booster donations prior to NIL. i don't think there was a huge pool of untapped donors who refused to give money until NIL was a thing.

Good Lord, yes, a huge NIL will help with coaching or lack there of, BUT

until Keatts gets in a really good recruiting class and stops relying on the portal, it ain't happening.

the portal is supposed to help supplement a good class. The problem is keatts tries to build teams around the portal.

NIL be damned, if your coach sucks at coaching....you're just throwing money away.

I guess it's just a coincidence that Clemson is good at basketball now, along with the entire SEC. Probably has nothing to do with NIL. Brad Brownell just suddenly learned how to coach in the last couple years.

Also, there's very little incentive to recruit high school players now. They are much more high risk to not be able to translate their success to the college level and playing against better talent. Pretty much every high major team is made of transfer players. If you're not getting the blue chip 5 star recruits (which we don't have the NIL money to compete for) it makes a lot more sense to invest in players who have proven to be effective at the college level. P5 take just aren't going to take fliers on high school projects/upside recruits who might take years to develop.

The NC State NIL situation is laughable and sad. Expecting success when you're on the wrong side of a completely lopsided playing field is insane. Last year was a fun run, but it is unlikely to ever be repeated until we are spending money to compete or there is a salary cap in college athletics.
