Quote :
"Former President Donald Trump somehow turned a question about the Ukraine crisis into an opportunity to bemoan windmills during an appearance on the “Full Send” podcast hosted by YouTubers.

“What do you see happening next, then? Cause it seems like the tensions are high. How does this all end? Is this going to be a long-term thing? How do you see it unfolding?” Nelk Boys founder Kyle Forgeard asked the former president during a sit-down discussion about Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

“Well, and I said this a long time ago, if this happens, we are playing right into their hands. Green energy. The windmills don’t work. They’re too expensive. They kill all the birds. They ruin your landscapes,” Trump answered.

“And yet the environmentalists love the windmills. And I’ve been preaching this for years. The windmills ? and I had them way down ? but the windmills are the most expensive energy you can have. And they don’t work.”"

Just for fun, I'm trying to get an idea of what he was trying to say, but I'm having trouble. Is he saying that the Deep State is propagating this war for the purpose of making Russian Oil scarce and therefore pushing a windmill energy agenda? And if tensions escalate, we're "playing right into [Deep State's] hands" of green energy?

Why did he have to call them windmills? Sigh.

I think it's plain to see that at this point, he won't be the 2024 nominee.

I just assumed he didn't even understand the context of the question and made up some stream-of-consciousness bullshit, but then again I don't know how much the Ukraine topic was discussed before that particular question was asked.

^Why would that be plain to see?

I'm torn on whether I want Trump to be the 2024 Republican nominee or not. I certainly can't stand him, and it's not much of a stretch to consider a second term for him as an existential crisis for American democracy. However, it also seems like nominating him gives the best chance to elect almost any Democrat who might oppose him. If Trump doesn't run or somehow doesn't win his party's nomination, we run the risk of a more charismatic "Smart Trump" winning outright, which also wouldn't be great. Thinking through this as I type, however, if Trump is the nominee, he will just claim he won no matter what and as we saw in January 2021, that also didn't turn out well. Probably not worth that kind of risk just to keep a Democrat in office.

Not worth the risk. That and I'm sure people were thinking the exact same thing in 2016 but he ended up getting elected.

He needs to be as far away from the office of the presidency as possible.

exactly. There are myriad problems with Trump, far beyond policy. A "smart Trump" would at least mitigate some of those. A DeSantis, as an example, wouldn't be good, but then again neither is Biden, and there's no reason to believe that we wouldn't survive either of them OK. They're both probably the sort of bad that we can, over the long run, represent a speed bump, not a land mine. Trump is a guaranteed disaster at best, and an catastrophic, existential threat at worst. No politics are worth chancing him.

Taken seriously by who? This feels like it should say “if the GOP wants to be taken seriously by moderates they should boost Romney”. But they can definitely win (and have won) by putting Trumpy candidates on the ballot. Feels like we’ve been having the “Trump will be the end of the GOP” argument for like 7 years now. And it’s proving to not be true.

Im not sure how they are done for, they have the Supreme Court for a generation and prob a coin flip chance to win back congress in 6 months. With Biden's approval rate where it is they may be betting favorites in 2024

GOP is as viable as ever. The only thing “done for” is the people like Mitt Romney or Liz Cheney that are now outcasts of the party. But let’s not pretend the Republican Party is dying. It may have transformed into something else. But it’s plenty viable.

I’m sure there’s polling that would be more definitive than my anecdotal opinion. But isn’t it fair to say that Trump has brought more people to the Republican Party? It may feel like he’s narrowed the base due to his style and the stereotype of the MAGA voter. But there’s plenty of more traditional Republican voters and politicians that haven’t left the party in addition to the new people he’s brought in. Sure, he driven some away and definitely was polarizing to that point that his presence on the ballot increased Dem turnout. I just don’t see how anybody can say he’s killed the Republican Party. Maybe he killed whatever fantasized version of the Republican Party some people had (the moral party for small government, I guess?). But that hasn’t had any material change on the electability and viability of the party in current and future elections as far as I can tell.

I guess I’m just asking…is anybody actually saying the GOP isn’t viable? Or do y’all just mean the vision of what the GOP once was is now gone?

The written story has a diff pull quote then the audio that I heard this morning. In the audio he says since Dems didn't have it in their previous bill they were out of luck from him unless they could offset.
