I'm not talking about being convincing; I'm talking about number of votes cast.

I'm saying that I think that "energizing the base" is overrated. 40%+ of the country is going to vote Dem no matter what, and 40%+ is going to vote GOP no matter what, and I really think that concerns over voter turnout are overblown. I just don't buy that many of the die-hard partisans are going to sit at home and not vote, even if they aren't on fire about a more moderate candidate.

Conversely, when you go with a loony-bin candidate and campaign to "energize the base", there is a very real danger of losing swing voters and independents--in fact, it's a foregone conclusion. The parties just bet that they can more than recoup those numeric losses by getting good voter turnout from their base (which I suspect that they'd largely get anyway).

Then, in addition to driving swing voters to vote for the other guy, if ANYONE is inclined to just sit at home and say "fuck it", it's swing voters. The party base and fringe will hold their nose and vote for something less than their far-left/right dream candidate.
