From the previous page:
OK, so I have a neighbor of mine that works at HHGregg and he said he could get me a pretty decent discount on anything I wanted to buy there. In the neighborhood of 20-30% on most things. So I'm looking to get the best thing 2 grand will buy.
I want 1080p and non-projection screen and besides that I'm practically clueless. Bigger is better up to like 50 inches or so and beyond that, I don't really care. Anybody care to weigh in with what they'd get for ~$2500 from HHGregg? Or would I still be better off getting it somewhere else like online or whatever?
Looks like HHGregg only sells Panasonic and Samsung Plasmas. Is there another brand I should be looking at?] 5/6/2008 11:33:22 AM |

This is the new Samsung model, which does not have Automotion, but has a faster response time (so you may not need it) and higher contrast ratio among other things.
http://www.hhgregg.com/ProductDetail.asp?SID=n&ProductID=20731
For another thousand, you get Automotion, an even faster response time, and even better contrast ratio.

i went into hhgregg at briar creek today. begin rant...
salesman: what can i show you today? me: i'm just looking around. salesman: are you looking around at anything in particular? me: no, i'm just out and about today.
he then proceeds to follow me around the store. i saw him out of the corner of my eye. i stopped at the tv section and he came right up to me and said "are you looking for a new tv?" i just looked at him with a wtf face and said "dude, i'm just looking". i know people have got to make a living, but i was seriously about to just walk out, and i doubt i will go again. 5/11/2008 10:36:38 PM |

any suggestions for HD monitors? i'm not sure i need the TV aspect, since i have two tuners in the HTPC...and if i can save $100+, it might be worth it
also, anyone have experience with toshiba LCDs? i took a look at the toshiba 37HL67 37" at costco ($800), and it looked good (especially in high ambient light), but i was wondering if anyone had experience with their dynalight (back light control, which i've never used) or 4-mode contrast features

costco has the philips 42TA648BX 42" 1080p LCD for $1k including the extended 2-year warranty:
http://tinyurl.com/4p3pvg
i KNOW that contrast is fairly arbitrary, but this one is claiming 29,000:1, which seems absurdly high...and then the brightness is only 500cd/m2
i realize i should take a look at it for myself (and i will), but i'm curious as to whether or not anyone here owns a philips LCD and if they're happy with it 5/16/2008 1:02:22 PM |

^^ a friend of mine has a ~50" toshiba lcd and yes, it's very bright. i have mostly seen it at night, but even in a well lit room it was easy to see clearly. the colors seemed a bit saturated, but that's probably correctable with the settings menu.
toshiba seems like a really good price/value for tv's, and i've always liked their lcd screens on laptops. 5/16/2008 1:20:09 PM |

i finally decided on the samsung 42" 720p plasma (model PN42A450):
http://tinyurl.com/6q9br9
$889.99 - 12% coupon = $783.19 + $52.87 tax = $836.06
seem like a pretty good deal? i debated whether or not 1080p was worth the $200+ premium at this size and decided it wasn't...i was impressed by the "filterbright" anti-glare feature, and the colors really do look better than the LCDs within my price range (to me, anyway)...i'm a bit worried about burn-in, but here's hoping it's not an issue
samsung's anynet+ feature is intriguing, but i don't own any other samsung A/V equipment 5/20/2008 10:44:13 PM |

Listen to this crazy shit. Today I got a Extended Service Plan offer through Samsung for my TV I bought last year. Paid $1599 for my LN-T4065F in July. To get 1 more year of factory warranty it was $209, for 3 years it was $600.
Like hell!!!!
Considering I bought it with my AMEX, im good for an extra year anyways! Plus AMEX, just credits you the charge if it breaks in the next year! And yes I still have the statment and receipts showing that I paid with my AMEX. Its looking like it may break sometime next year about this time. ;-) jk 5/22/2008 10:11:54 AM |

of course. i'm not sure how that price compares to what you can get for that caliber of tv today, but i do know that a friend of mine paid nearly that much for a 52" Sony LCD rear projection tv a few years ago, and it's only 720p. it makes me happy to see that you can get 1080p and 120Hz in a flat panel for about the same price now.
[rant] the one thing i don't like about that tv and (sadly) a lot of others out today is that damn glossy bezel. i hate it! you might as well border your tv with a fucking mirror! [/rant]

That does look like a pretty decent deal GraniteBalls.
The one thing to think about, and I'm sure you know a lot more about where you'll be putting the TV than any of us, is that a 52 inch tv is REALLY FUCKIN BIG. When you're there in the store and all the tvs are on the wall you kind of lose perspective. When I got my 46 inch one home it overwhelms the entire room. Luckily I don't think it's too bad, but IMO the speaker placement isn't the only thing about that picture that's fucked up. That tv is simply too big to be in a room that tiny, especially when it appears the that the main viewing spot is...what's that? about 4 feet away?
Then again I'm hardly an expert, and as I mentioned I don't have the first clue how big/what size the room is you'll be putting it into. I know for me personally, I'm satisfied with the 46 incher, and anything bigger would have been too much. 5/22/2008 4:44:55 PM |

i've always heard that the screen size should be 1/3 the viewing distance, with a little "too big" being better than a little "too small" 5/22/2008 8:15:31 PM |

I have a medium size room and I must say that a 42" is probably too big. I had a 32" with perfect viewing distance and a 37" probably would have been the ideal upgrade, but the 42" I posted was too good a deal to pass up. resolution is the 1080 part, the i and p stand for interlaced and progressive scan.
the plasma you linked to is 1080i, not 1080p

so explain the resolution thing then
so why dont they say 1080i anywhere (or 720p, like other TVs that cant do 1080p)
I'm not sure whats going on here. Why do they say it's got 3 1080p inputs?
cnet says it's 1080p
but hitachi doesnt say that.

hmmmm
i wish i could see this in a store next to a 1080p picture
Quote : | "OK, lets get this straight, it is NOT 1080p, I knew that when I bought it and I'm still glad I bought it. Here is the deal with this TV. 1080i = 1920x1080 1080p = 1920x1080 What does that mean to you? Interlaced video can appear to have a slight flicker. It still has the same detail that the progressive screen has, it just draws the screen in a different way, instead of every pixel being drawn every scan (like 1080p) 1080i draws every other line each scan. This can cause a flicker in some scenes. Why do most people hate 1080i? Not because of the flicker; but it is that most TV's that display 1080i do NOT have a 1920 x 1080 resolution, instead they have just 1366x 768. The problem with this is the 1920 accross gets compressed to 1366 and much of the picture is lost, and the 1080 down gets compressed to 768. This TV does NOT do this. Let me make this clear this TV looks GREAT, you have the full 2 million pixels just as a 1080p, for the price it can not be beat!" |

Ok.
1) It's a Hitachi 2) If you're having trouble figuring out the resolution of the display, that's a bad sign 3) That post you quoted is wrong. If anything most TVs that are 1366x768 are 720p sets, especially 50" plasmas.6/16/2008 6:34:28 PM |
