i watched first position recently, which is about youths/teens in this huge international ballet competition. it was fantastic, and it's free on amazon prime.

also, chasing ice was pretty stunning visually, although lacked even the most basic of scientific rigor (things like showing images of glaciers a few years apart without even mentioning the seasons of each photo).

Jiro is SO GOOD! My roommate showed it to me and I didn't believe something about sushi could be that good but boy was I wrong. You will be craving sushi like no other after watching it.

Searching for Sugarman is a great story but the film seemed lacking. Perhaps thats because I already saw the 60 Minute piece which really covered most everything in the film. The music is really cool.

Imposter I watched on a plane back from Dubai. I give it a C-, lots of potential but lackluster delivery.

so I watched The Imposter last night. I was expecting so much more payoff from the story. It was gripping, but in the end you are kind of left with "that's it? that's all that happened?" on your brain.


my buddy recommended "Stranded: I've Come from a Plane that Crashed on the Mountains" a 2007 doc about the Uruguayan rugby team that was stranded from a plane crash and forced to eat the remains of the dead in order to survive. Has anyone watched it?

I just watched Indie Game: The Movie, and I really enjoyed it. Having played two out of the three games that it focuses on (SuperMeatBoy, Braid, and Fez), it was really interesting to see the struggles and philosophy that went into getting the games ready for public consumption. It also made me realize that unlike the movies, novels, and music I purchase, I don't have great familiarity with the people behind the games that I enjoy.

About 3 african-american brothers growing up in detroit amidst the mo-town sound who decided to create a band in '71 and basically invented punk (although hardly anyone heard it until 35+ years later).

An album of their old stuff was released in 2009.

To say that Death basically invented punk is wildly off-base.

But they were firmly in the Detroit (and therefore general) protopunk movement, and they do rule, despite too much crash cymbal.

The movie also rules.

I know there were elements of punk in earlier music (like Talking Heads, Television, etc), and I know they were influenced by bands like the Who, Alice Cooper (and Sabbath). But I'm not aware of any "real" punk albums that sounded as "punk" as what Death was doing in the early/mid 70s. Of course, nobody really heard them buntil . But the Ramones and Sex Pistols didn't release albums until several years after Death recorded their songs. I know they didn't really "invent" punk rock, because you can't credit anyone with really "inventing" it, but I'd be curious to hear your expert opinion of why it's "widely off-base". They were doing it several years before the Ramones or Sex Pistols released albums.

^^you're right about the Stooges, and THs. I guess Television was about the same time. And while MC5 certainly influenced some punk, I wouldn't call it "punk" like I'd call Death "punk". Anyways, I'm not trying to argue that Death actually "invented" punk, I just wanted an expert's opinion on why that is "widely off-base". They were making "punk" before "punk" was really a defined genre.

I Watched "Lenny Cooke" on Showtime tonight. It was pretty good. It was about a guy who entered the 2002 NBA draft straight out of high school and went for the money, but he didn't get drafted even though he was one of the top 3 high school players in the nation. He ended up being just your average person.
