Their big men could have/should have hedged out further on their screens. You can push guards out near half court on screens if you want (our guys have done that on several occasions this year...and on some occasions they don't...). UNC could EASILY do this, because the other big men is either Zeller or Henson, which is more than enough to protect the lane.

Duke could only beat UNC by raining threes...and UNC let them do it.

As far as the surgery is concerned if they thought it was really serious I imagine they would have taken the whole kidney out. But they could mostly want to check the part they cut out and take the rest later if unnecessary.

The article said that even with a second surgery, he'll be back before the start of the season. Plus he's only a mediocre game coach, much better at recruiting. I think they could do much better with him not at the game...

Kidney surgery sucks major monkey balls. But he'll only be out of it for about a week and back to light tasks for the next ~5 weeks after that. He'll be fine to get around without heavy lifting, etc.
