There are company cultures that laugh at it when people come in with a suit on. I have definitely worked at a company where that was the case. They are generally the exception though, unless you're interviewing in California.
In reality in a group of 5 people for an software engineering roll, zero will make the phone screen. Out of maybe 50 people two or three will make an in person interview, and by that time you're so thrilled to have a candidate you usually don't care what they are wearing. The only thing important should be if you get along with them, they are cool enough to have a beer with, and they know their shit. Exception to the wearing rule: guy we had with a DTF? tattoo 6 inches across on his neck. We talked to him in person with out a phone screen and he got the phone screen portion totally wrong, and proceeded to ask us, REALLY? That's it?
It's funny the people that totally flub questions and are super confident about it. It's got to be my favorite, followed by people that don't have the intellectual curiosity to look up what they got wrong in the phone screen and bomb the same question in the in person interview. Oh and then there's the group that are self-taught. I still don't know what the fuck that means.

i'm rethinking the career fair at this point because of the travel and time off it requires. also, bigman made this point in another thread, a lot of them will say "well here's my card, it has our website on it, go apply there"
there is still the importance of meeting people in person, but do many companies still collect paper resumes and do the face to face thing? 9/26/2012 8:38:32 PM |

^ completely disagree.
Also, ^^,^Due to the way we do recruiting EVERYONE has to apply online so that they are in our system. We still do take resumes, we still do take notes on the back of the resumes, and ALL of the resumes get reviewed by HR and the ones that have some sort of relevance to what we do end up getting routed to the desk of the hiring manager who would potentially use them within our company.
But, we will still tell you that you have to apply online. It does NOT mean that coming to the career fair was a waste. In fact, if you ONLY applied online you definitely have less of a chance of getting your resume reviewed. 9/26/2012 10:41:26 PM |

So I started a job that is kind of 'beneath' my qualifications but they expressed a desire to promote me pretty soon and kinda started me working on more complex things than my job title requires already. I get paid less than a desired amount but its still more than enough to pay bills, student loans etc. Anyways I told the owner flat out when he called me about the position that I was really looking for something with more $ dolla bux and he said that he understood that and it was okay if I left 2 days after i started.
ANYWAYS so I have this other job I'm probably going to get- its basically a 33% pay increase which is kind of a lot for someone with pretty minimal real experience HOWEVER its shit hours (I think i'd be working 8-5 germany time lol). Apparently its only until they get their kraut operation up to 100% but who knows. Wat do?
Also like the majority of my social life happens at night like starting at 10 even on weeknights. I'm cool with cutting back on that because it typically leads to shitty days at work but idk if i can cut all of the positives out of it as well.
tl:dr
Took a mediocre job, possibly looking to switch... how bad is working overnight?
This has been a Krallum presentation

^^ There are lots of companies hiring, there is just a lot more unemployed people applying. The last few jobs I've interviewed for they have mentioned that they had received dozens, if not over a hundred resumes in just the couple of days they had the ad up. So I got to the point where I would search for jobs twice a day. Once in the morning and once in the afternoon so hopefully any job I applied to, my resume would be one of the first ones they saw.
On that note, I just got a job offer today and will be starting in a couple of weeks 11/8/2012 10:22:55 PM |

Got asked to come in for an interview tomorrow. First response I have gotten from anything I have applied for in the last 5 months. I am really happy to feel wanted, but I hope I am not selling myself a little short here. I left my previous job because it was stagnant and I felt it wouldn't take me anywhere, and I just don't want to make the same mistake again. In the event they make an offer, it'd be the first I've gotten in almost half a year, but I just don't wanna jump on the first thing, know what I mean? 1/10/2013 3:44:07 PM |

I was in the same boat last month. Looking for jobs since March, nothing, nothing, nothing, then I shifted my search to Richmond and found something. Time was kindof running out on my search and I didn't want this job to get away. Counteroffered on the salary and boom, done.

How'd it go? Hear anything yet? I'm also curious about the decision to leave a current job before having a new one lined up. I've known others who do this, but unless you really hate your job, I've wondered why people do this. I mean I'm all for career advancement and pursuing your dreams, but why not have a pay check coming in while you do? (Unless its a situation where you have to move to a new area to make it in a particular field or something)1/26/2013 4:39:33 PM |

To Supplanter
I did hear back from the company and was not offered the job. I wasn't too broken up about it because I didn't think I was a good fit myself, and so I'm not surprised the president didn't either. It was good practice though and nice to have an opportunity to interview.
As for my old job, I mentioned it previously earlier in this thread, but basically it was a timing thing. I had wanted out of this gig for a while (bad management, I had a hellish commute and I felt stifled creatively and professionally). For the past year while I was there, I had applied for some jobs but never got interviews. I figured I had to do something more or I'd waste away my life and happiness at this place, so I left the company in August. However, it was a calculated decision because of several things:
-I made plans with the boss to be an independent contractor with them, so I would still see some work though not as much. That so far as not been as profitable as I imagined because once I left, the company actually transitioned to doing more programming and less design so there hasn't been much work to farm out. -The company has a history of re-hiring people that quit or were even fired, so if worse comes to worse I thought I could come back -My wife is working full time in a stable job -We both have awesome PT jobs, which were unfortunately affected by the NHL lockout which couldn't have come at a worse time -We don't have kids yet so if I was going to leave a stable FT job, this was the time. I also want to be in a job I see myself staying in for a while once it comes time for babies.
So, even though I have been out of full time work for a little while, I don't currently and don't think I will regret the decision. I know that something will come around for me eventually if I just stay positive and keep doing what I've been doing. And the time off has allowed me to do a lot of things including refocusing on what my professional goals are, doing things that I enjoy doing and never had time for, and even do some traveling I never could have done with my FT job.

Okay need some advice. Got two job offers today:
Company A: Has been around for a while, pretty large client base and its not really feasible for it to shrink. The position is decent for a career path but the likely path would be probably my 5th choice out of everything possible that I want to do professionally/ I'm good at (including financially unfeasable things like playing in shitty doom metal bands). A friend works there and was probably pretty influential in me getting an offer. Its basically in downtown which is awesome because fuck packing lunch and fuck eating at the same places every day.
Company B: I'd make slightly less here but its like a 6% difference so its not huge. I personally think i'd be better in this role. Its exactly what I was doing at my last job. I think it would be easier for me, but still challenging. This company is fairly new but it is a funded startup and has seem some pretty impressive growth in the last year. Every review i've read of their products online are always 5 stars. Very solid product. After doing a bit of research I discovered it is run by people with a ton of experience and success with growing small business. However the role here is very new and it is kind of a risk. I've been told multiple times that what I am hired to do today could completely change depending on how fast the company grows in the next few months.
I'm not really sure what to do. I'm kind of leaning towards company B because I think i'd have more of an impact on the future direction and policies of the company and not just an impact on profitability which is cool. However it is risky. I was just laid off from a company who was acquired and its still a thought in the back of my mind. I also kinda feel shitty for not taking an offer from someone who probably spoke highly of me (even though it wasn't requested)
Oh shit...
Also company B told me that they have unlimited vacation days (read: no strict limit) assuming you are caught up or ahead. Realistically this would probably be around 3 weeks or so but still.
Wat do

You're young, seemingly intelligent, and have a degree.
Take B, unless your girlfriend is preggers and you need the stability of A.
B sounds more interesting and could open up better opportunities, and isn't THAT unstable. 2/22/2013 1:25:53 AM |

Company B, probably.
Seems like (from your description) that even if things didn't pan out, there's enough smart folks there so that if you worked hard and made yourself likable as an employee, you'd be able to access opportunities via your position there / relationship with coworkers. Also, if you've got an "in" at Company A, that may be an option in the future, anyways.
But it seems like B would provide you potential for more successful work and thus, an opportunity to work with / impress more-experienced coworkers, thus opening more doors in the future, etc.] 2/22/2013 7:53:13 AM |
