U I was just trying to point out open deck isnt the end of the world. I chose the s2k motor as my example becase i know its power limits are high. It ships with forged pistons and rods and doesnt need two barbto make good power. 1/26/2012 8:56:52 PM |
sumfoo1 soup du hier 41043 Posts user info edit post |
Yeah... the truth of the matter is, it's cylinder pressure that makes open deck blocks fail. Which when a subie runs a gt35r without MAJOR head work and cams they're running close to 30 psi. When an s2000 runs a gt35r they're running 17-22 psi because your redline is 1000 rpm past even what most built motors run and your heads breath better. 1/27/2012 8:33:25 AM |

I've heard that even with it's stock low grip tires it does not have enough power to power slide in any way once out of 1st or 2nd gear. That's probably why the E brake is being used. 2/7/2012 10:43:48 AM |

The price you pay to keep an anemic 2.0 liter engine on the boil all the time if you so choose. This car would be near perfect if it had the same weight, same price and just had a 2.5 liter engine (instead of a 2.0) with an extra 30 horsepower.
Well said sumfoo1, well said 3/21/2012 11:51:39 PM |

Of course a good question is what standard features do you get for this base price of $24,200? I mean this car is a whooping $5,000 more than the tC. I'd never consider another FWD vehicle but to the layperson its going to be hard to convince them of the value of this car.
If the Scion base price included HID & Alcantara I'd be game. Of course it obviously won't. 3/22/2012 10:41:02 AM |

I've been debating a BRZ or a brand new 2013 Genesis 2.0T coupe. I can't find any at dealerships yet, as they are just beginning to roll them out. The fuel economy I think is acceptable for the BRZ. High strung engines don't get good fuel economy by today's standards, which is why they are becoming less and less common. 3/22/2012 9:52:26 PM |

^^I don't call a 6500 rpm horsepower peak "high strung", regardless of a 7400 rpm redline.

The Miata may be slower, but it has a convertible top that adds cost. The GC 2.0T, WRX and Mustang V6 (V6 with Track Pack is just over $25k I believe) will all beat it around any road course...MSP3 possibly doing the same. It's a better deal than the GTI and the Civic Si is just plain overpriced by around $3,000.
Also keep in mind that Scion's prices are non-negotiable. In the meantime just about every car on the above list can be had at or less than MSRP.
And you'll be lucky to find BRZs selling for less than $27,000

Agreed on all accounts... the only thing i'm going to say is this:
We all know there is an x-factor to handling & feedback, something that the little rx8 did a great job in mastering. I will still be test driving one and it may still be worth it if it just *feels right*
That being said... a 6 year old Caymen S would have the same feel with about 100 more ft-lbs 3/23/2012 8:39:57 AM |

We're on the same wavelength here. Also, at least the RX8 could hit 60 in under 6 seconds and pull 14 second quarter mile times. This car will be lucky to do either.3/23/2012 9:02:29 AM |

15.3@92 . Ok, so much for that idea. There's no way I can buy this. Sure, I'll test drive one and probably enjoy the experience. I don't have $25k cash I can spend on one. So would I borrow money for a brand new sports car that only runs 15s @ less than 95mph in the year 2012? I can't do it. I just can't.
I hope the Genesis can do low 14s at least in 2.0T, with trap speed near 100mph. Maybe that's asking too much.

I really hope that 1/4 mile time turns out to not be the norm. Slower than a civic si and a Miata (2 of the slowest sporty/sports cars) is ridiculous for a brand new sports car that could have easily taken the whole market by storm. 3/24/2012 11:19:14 AM |

^^most people looking to spend $25k+ on a SPORTS car are going to want more under the hood for their money. Given that they could have used a larger engine without impacting anything else it's crap.
I will say that those handling numbers are amazing given the budget all season minded tires. But the acceleration figures are crap.
My '92 GS-R's stock accel numbers beat this car. 0-60 in 6.8s, 1/4 mile time of 15.4 @ 90 from 160 hp and 2680lb curb weight. How in the world is the FR-S slower? 3/25/2012 9:16:42 PM |
arghx Deucefest '04 7584 Posts user info edit post |
the problem is that the vehicle is balanced in all aspects except straight-line speed. and you will see a lot of FR-S owners with a chip on their shoulder because the car is so slow, just like Rx-8 owners tend to be (all other rotary stuff aside). Now when the car gets old and cheap don't be surprised if it becomes a favorite for racing.
I like handling a lot (have owned two Rx-7's) but for $25k minimum I want to keep up with V6 camry's and turbo Sonatas, which are hardly the benchmark for sports cars now. Now if I could get an FR-S for under $20k (not realistic given the design choices) it would be a different story.
It really comes down to the price.

Going by numbers/magazine racing the trap speed is 3mph higher than the GS-R according to the Edmunds test. I'm sure the FR-S/BRZ is faster overall--it would depend on the launch and the tires. That's not saying much though because 20 years have passed.

I totally agree. Around a track the FR-S should have an advantage for sure. But its like you said (and was most of the reason I brought it up) 20 years have passed.3/26/2012 12:17:00 AM |

Yeah when the teg was new that shit was quick now my wife's soul puts up similar numbers.
Which is even more sad because that means an $18000 soul has similar straight line numbers to a $25k rwd sports car.
Now I go back to if they offer a forced induction version, I'll bite, if it's slightly under sti price, otherwise blow me.
The only think I'm happy about is the tranny was still ordered to be rated for over 320ftlbs which to me sounds like fi was in mind.
Unless they order a tranny with a safety factor ( but one would think the tranny builder would be responsible for safety factors. 3/26/2012 12:27:25 AM |

Totally unacceptable, it should be a LOT faster. It's not that I'm all about power/weight as much as there being a line that you just can't go below for a car that's supposed to be 'fun to drive'. 3/26/2012 11:43:24 AM |
