to be fair, Olly's a hell of a shot (and Ygritte knows it)
and the elevator wasn't that important: I mean, if all you did was take the castle and prevent anyone from using the elevator, that's fine

I don't think she saw him. He was ducked down behind the railing. She would have at least have to leave her position and come around the corner to get a shot at him if she knew he was there and that may have exposed her to an ambush. 6/10/2014 5:00:09 PM |

Someone explain what I missed.... How is it that the wildlings attacked castle black, on the other side of the wall, when the other army waits on the opposite side of the wall? I must not have been paying attention. 6/11/2014 11:24:29 AM |
ncWOLFsu Gottfather FTL 12586 Posts user info edit post |
They planned it out that way. End of last season: Jon, Ygritte, the rest of the people that attacked from the south side all climbed the wall. That's how those wildlings have been hitting villages south of the wall.
The entire wildling horde couldn't climb the wall undetected like that. I think the goal was for the night's watch to be distracted dealing with the massive army that they let their guard down and the party attacking from the south can open the tunnel gates for the rest of them to get in. 6/11/2014 11:38:03 AM |

I thought the Brianne / Hound fight scene had some weird choppy camera angle switching but the rest was good.
So now that Tywin is dead and Jamie can't inherit lands, etc. does that mean everything goes to Tyrion or to Cercei (which would make her apt to be a super powerful rich crazy woman)? Wonder if Jamie will get indicted for letting Tyrion out, too.
They didn't wrap anything up with Sansa or that knight Dany got rid of.
Also, I don't think the Hound is dead and I was surprised how unemotional Arya seemed about all of it.
My friend said they left out the epilogue to Storm of Swords, which is apparently pretty epic, but maybe they needed more material for the next season. 6/15/2014 10:39:28 PM |

^^my guess is that epilogue is cut from the show version of the story. The timing just wouldn't make much sense given the timeline on the show now.
They're already into (or in one case through) the next two books for many characters.
Anyway, good finale. Curious to see what the masses make of it all.

A couple questions:
Did Stannis land north or south of the wall? If he landed south of it, why would he bother going to Castle Black? If he landed north, what kind of strategy is that to land north of a giant wall that he may not be able to get his army through? 6/16/2014 9:38:16 AM |
Meg All American 6759 Posts user info edit post |
he landed north of the wall to fight mance's army because of what melisandre saw in the flames. i guess i don't understand your question. are you asking why he went north at all? 6/16/2014 10:09:37 AM |
ElGimpy All American 3111 Posts user info edit post |
Yes that's my questions, why he is interested in fighting the wildlings. He's been obsessed with taking the throne for a while, seems counter intuitive to go waste time and men fighting an army that's on the other side of a giant wall that's kept them out for such a long time.
The red lady seeing something in her fire would negate that logic yes, I didn't realize she saw that in the fire though 6/16/2014 10:29:30 AM |

i can't remember which episode it was last season, but davos brings stannis a letter from the night's watch and melisandre does something with her fire, then agrees they should go because of the threat from the white walkers.
sorry, i know that's not very descriptive at all. 6/16/2014 10:36:34 AM |
CalledToArms All American 22025 Posts user info edit post |
I wouldn't consider Stannis' motivation a spoiler since it is pretty minor and fairly transparent, especially now that he is already actually at the wall, but I'm still not sure whether I should post it here in this thread or not since I don't know if it has been explicitly stated in the show.

I assume he wants to become "King of the North" first, to help further his claim to the throne. I haven't read the books, but that seems like what the obvious strategy would be. He needs to get more men before he can take on the Lannisters again. 6/16/2014 10:50:55 AM |
CalledToArms All American 22025 Posts user info edit post |
yeah. I mean they set it up early in the show by having the Wall sending out letters to all the major houses in Westeros letting all know that the White Walkers have returned and they needed help to protect the realm. Stannis was the only one who was shown reacting to the news. 6/16/2014 10:54:55 AM |
ElGimpy All American 3111 Posts user info edit post |
I remember the scroll and that whole thing in last season's finale, but that was about whitewalkers I thought...if he wants men it seems like coming in and killing a bunch of wildlings might not be the best strategy. How about announcing that he's got them surrounded and they should join him. And how does he even know that the wildlings have this army that's attacking the wall? Was that in the scroll too? I forget
I mean, it's nice that he's acting on that scroll and all, since they made it seem so important last season, but he basically acted like it never happened this whole season

Well, from my recollection, the decision to head North was made based on the real threat being what lies 'beyond-the-wall'. They didn't head there with the main goal of fighting wildlings.
Melisandre and Stannis decided that they needed to help the wall defend itself from potential White Walkers. If the wall's claim is true and Stannis shows up and helps "protect the realm" from White Walkers while the other houses are locked in power struggles trying to find their spot in the new pecking order, then he may win supporters, especially in the North.
It's a political move by a guy who doesn't have an army currently strong enough to continue a full war
