Definitely give it some time. The story arc over the first book is great, but it truly takes the entire book to develop and appreciate it.
Also, where's Nerdchick? I thought for sure she would be watching.

i'm not going to go back and read everyone's thoughts but even as a non-reader I really enjoyed the premiere. I have a hard time getting into fantasy novels (i'm not a big reader to begin with) but these kinds of shows I really enjoy. I'm in. 4/19/2011 10:14:37 PM |

I was impressed that the show was so trusting the book for the lost part. I liked it, except for the part at the end when drogo rapes danny, that's not how it goes in the book 4/19/2011 10:49:55 PM |

sadly I don't have HBO And since I don't even have cable it would be major $$$ for me to get it. I think I can purchase episodes off itunes or something, but sadly my Internet connection is sketchy which makes it hard to watch shows online.
however, I have a friend who promises to burn DVDs for me once the season gets going ... we'll see if that happens. ]4/20/2011 12:03:42 AM |

If you don't like fantasy because of all the wizards and magic you'll like this. There is very little magic, especially in the first couple of books.
If you don't like it because the places and people aren't real then I guess you won't enjoy it, but that would be a dumb thing to dislike.4/20/2011 12:41:45 AM |

Had more to do with the white walkers or whatenthehellever they were. Dont mind wizards and shit. Just as long as they stay in their own universe. They don't belong in middle ages.

Question: When the two white siblings were exiled after Ned and the king killed the old king was it a peaceful exile? Were Ned and company like "Okay I realize you guys are kids and didn't really do much but you have to leave" or did they physically try to kill them too and they just escaped? 4/21/2011 8:43:53 AM |
CalledToArms All American 22025 Posts user info edit post |
I don't want to give away too much because I'm not sure how much will be covered in the show. I will say that they were not "allowed" to leave. However, Ned would never have killed the children. He probably would have forced them into exile or taken them hostage while the Lannisters would have had them killed.
However, by the time he got to King's Landing with Robert's army (who was wounded at an earlier battle along the way) the Lannisters had already betrayed their allies the Targaryens and killed Aerys (among others that I won't get into yet...you'll learn more maybe when Ser Gregor is introduced hopefully). Viserys and his mother escaped the city before that point, where his mother gave birth to his sister Daenerys. The kids then escaped across the see basically.
Hopefully that's not too much info since it is mainly back-story. There are other key details there that I am purposely leaving out though that are more important to the show and I am certain they will reveal later to build characters and the story.

completely random aside, but the opening theme reminds me of the opening music from serenity
also, i'm trying to figure out why it's better tv for catelyn to beg ned not to go south (ie, a complete change from the books)

i don't know...i just reread the books, so it's pretty fresh in my mind. ned was all "i'm going to say no...my place is in the north." but catelyn was all "you have to go so sansa can be queen and for the honor of your house (etc, etc)."
on tv, ned's all gung-ho about going, and cat's trying to convince him to stay. in the grand scheme of things, it's not a big change and doesn't make much difference to the integrity of the adaptation. it just strikes me as odd.

thats not how it happened in the book, she did not want ned to go at first. she never really wanted him to go at all, but in the book at a point its obvious he has to and she supports him in that, which is similar to the show. i think you are mis-remembering. 4/24/2011 10:49:33 PM |
UberCool All American 3457 Posts user info edit post |
hm...from the first catelyn chapter after robert asks ned to be the hand of the king:
ned: "i will refuse him...my duties are here in the north. i have no wish to be robert's hand." cat: "he will not understand that...if you refuse to serve him, he will wonder why...can't you see the danger that would put us in?"
maester luwin brings lysa's letter.
cat: "now we truly have no choice. you must be robert's hand." ned: "the only truths i know are here. the south is a nest of adders i would do better to avoid."
catelyn finally guilt-trips him into going. but like i said, it doesn't much matter.

but she wants him to stay, this inner conflict of hers between duty and longing for her husband is important and the show portrays that. nothing about the obligations changes that she does not want him to go. 4/24/2011 11:22:53 PM |

1) He's a bastard child 2) He was born after Ned and Catlyn were married (so you can see how that might cause some tension) 3) He's basically being raised like a son instead of being watched over from a distance like most bastards (like Robert's many bastards for example)

No, the scene of him in the bedroom with Cat basically came from the book where she begs Ned not to go. I guess in the book technically she was interested in him going at first, and then the fall happened with Bran so she changed her mind, and then she decides to go herself after that.
My guess is that they thought that wavering/flip-flopping might make her character seem less strong-willed on screen since each of these opinions would have to be expressed in this one episode. She would have been changing her mind too much imo. Makes sense for the show.4/25/2011 7:48:48 AM |

^yeah he's quickly become one of my least favorite characters. On another note, I usually enjoy Lena Heady but she really irks me as the queen. maybe that means she's perfect.

haha nice. Luckily my wife loves the books as much as I do so I haven't had to worry about that
And yeah, I hated Cersei in the books so they are doing a decent job with that. Personality-wise she has done really well. I'm not a huge fan of the hair they give her in this show and she's not quite as "hot" as she is supposed to be in the books but the writing and her acting are playing the character well.
Overall I thought last night's episode was very good again. Tyrion and Jon on the way to the wall was great. I think both those actors were cast very well and their banter has been perfect for developing both their characters. Similar with Ned and Robert as well.
They kind of brushed over the Hound's killing of Mycah but I guess it still got the point across in displaying the Hound/Sandor's indifference in slaughtering an innocent child.
