So 69 and I are building a garage for my house. It's going to be a 28x36. So, around 192 less sq. ft. than my house pretty sweet.

Anyways, I'll be updating it slowly as we actually get work done. Yesterday we got the foundation dug, about half leveled off. It was a good start, and I'm learning a lot.

a few pix:

nice man, remember just call me if you need an extra hand. Hyman's seafood doesnt control me anymore and my other job is flexible with work hours. And you better believe that Lee and I are going to help when we get back in the fall. It's nice to see it finally started and between you, keith and eventually lee and me, we can knock this shit out quick. Looks good and keep the pictures coming.

it's going to have 8 ft. doors, i can't recall inside height off the top of my head but, no, not really planning on a lift. i might, however get a scissor lift this christmas. that'd fit no matter the height

^^ do dogs piss on brick walls? it aint that complicated either, definately not rocket science, the slab is just gonna be a bitch because of needing more manpower, 14 yards going down, so someone is gonna have to start floating before we even finish pouring and tamping

i dont know either, but i do know that my family in NY owns a general contracting business and my grandfather and my 5 uncles in the biz have all built their own houses. they do almost all of it themselves (the family), but they contract out the foundation because its THAT important, and the roofing cuz that just sucks.

but i guess a house is more important than a garage

if you'd like to come take a look at the plans and what we've done so far man, feel free. it's gonna be solid and i'm not worried about it at all. the foundation will get poured after we finish leveling, then we'll do concrete blocks for the wall and to get it level.

then we backfill with dirt/gravel until it's level, then the concrete gets poured for the wall. it's not too bad, just a pain bc u have to level everything, then double check it. but then again, you don't want cars rolling out of your garage now do you?

you might want a slope towards the door so that you can spray it out and the water will go somewhere

i have never seen a completely level garage ever

but level is probably the way to go if you plan on welding big pieces together on the floor

i didn't mean the actual garage floor will be level. it's going to slope ~4 inches back to front. that's just for drainage purposes. good call though

I actually have a laser level for doing construction and layout work if need be.

Dad has it today, but let me know in advance a day or so, and I'll make sure I have it. We actually have two of them, and they are accurate to something like less than an inch over 1000 feet.

^nope. do you really need one of those silly things?

of course we have a building permit. it's not half-assed or nigger rigged, no offense to anyone that would take offense to that statement

so everything is leveled and we're going to pour concrete tomorrow. yayyyyy!

and dan i might take you up on that level.

god damn i love how random people that dont know a damn thing about building a birdhouse, much less a garage are trying to call us out on shit.

ok, more specifics as we are reaching those points 8" deep by 20" wide poured concrete footer 12" below ground level at the highest, 22" at the lowest, (one hell of a grade there), with 1/2" rebar at 8" in on both sides 2" from the bottom, going on top of that will be four rows of 8x8x16" cinder block, two high at the door openings, 1/2" J bolts every 48", the slab will be poured 4" deep on top of compacted fill and 4" compacted #67 gravel, 10" below the top of the blocks at the rear wall, sloping down to 12" below the top of the blocks at the doors, steps down 3/4" then 1" slope in 4' on the apron away from the doors

Quote :
" but they contract out the foundation because its THAT important, and the roofing cuz that just sucks. "

i'm guessing they contract out the foundation because it requires a lot of skill, a lot of time, and heavy equipment, three things that stick frame contractors despise, and the three things they love; build it quick, barely squeak by code, and profit

trust me, i have built plenty of houses, garages and shelters before, and done plenty of remodeling, and have dealt with plenty of sub-contractors, and dealt with some shitty general contractors, and i know how shit goes, everyone is out to make a buck, and the few that care about their work are few and far between

just saying, I used to work as a county planner and our code enforcement officer routinely issued notices of violation and cease and desist orders for illegal construction

I figured if you were professional enough to get machinery to do your site prep, you probably had pulled your permits first. But then again, construction is the dirtiest industry out there and there are always things being built and wetlands being filled without approval.

well... you only need a building permit for certain sizes depending on where you live at. I know in cary you need one for anything larger than 10'x10'. I remember when my friend went in with his eagle project to build a shed for a non-profit company in Cary. His plan called for a 9' 7/8th x 9' 7/8th shed so he wouldn't have to deal with getting a building permit. heh

that was one of the main holdups, getting up with the surveyor, and getting everything straight for the permit

we had the lot surveyed when my dad bought the house. so we just had to get copies of the survey. it was simple enough, then just had to draw where the garage would be to spec. now things are rolling though.

so, got the foundation poured today. took about an hour and a half bc we worked hard as shit. here are some pix:

started with this:

add a dump truck:

first stage of getting it level/working the air out:

me doing some final leveling:

69 doing some final leveling also:

overall it was hard work, but a satisfying end result. we should be getting blocks either friday or monday depending on when lowe's fixes their brokeass delivery truck.

I can help if you need a fullsize truck. Also do you have to order LVLs in specific lengths? I was told I need to add one to the center of my garage so I can eliminate the support poles. And yes I dont know shit about building a garage
