I don't know. Sure he does stupid and gross shit on the show.....

but something makes me think that if he was really in any serious danger, then the directors and camera crew would step in and give him a fresh drink of water, a bite to eat, or a gun.....

isn't the point of the show to teach us techniques on how to survive if put in that situation? it's not the "die trying to prove a point show"

yeah i don't get it - it seems the cameraman does pretty much the exact same things as him - except i guess he probably gets a canteen of water and probably some MREs or something

I mean....I guess so?

but to me, surviving in the wild means not having your camera crew 3 feet away from you willing to help you out...

that show is the dankness

and how you gonna make a show without a camera crew

basically they cant interact with him unless its a life or death situation and at night they camp about 25 meters away which is why most of the random filming at night is on his handheld

like someone said its not the "lets die so i can prove im hardcore" show, its about showing survival techniques and pretty much being a badass show in the meantime

only show on my dvr list

the camera crew is under "strict instruction" not to intervene...and i assume the crew has rations and gear to protect them from the elements (as illustrated when the camera man jumped into the glacial pool with bear)...and the crew "leaves" at night, where they go i do not know, i guess they set up camp somewhere nearby

EMCE the show for you seems to be Survivorman. He does it all on his own filming everything and dragging the camera gear behind him. It is a different style of survival show though.

He was British SAS before a parachute accident broke his back in 3 places.
Then he went on to climb Everest.

He's a tough dude.

no no no, I do like the show

I just think that if the premise of the show was how to survive in the wild, it wouldn't feature someone with a camera crew willing to help whenever he was in trouble. There's no way you can simply drag a camera around like that.

i mean either you can choose to believe the premise of the show or not, and the premise of the show is that they arent there to help him, just observe. the only time they can help is if its life or death and for this guy im pretty sure death is like "omg this bear just ripped off my arm shoot it"

ha. well I'll choose not to believe.

there is no way they would make a series out of a show (yes, this means that they planned on having season 2, 3, 4, ..... etc....) if they really expected this dude to die trying to do some stunt.

it's rigged!

ok then, thats cool

when the cameras are turned off they very well could be having tea and crumpets while playing cribbage, thats cool. it provides just enough suspension of disbelief to allow me to believe that homeboy is freezing his bawls off at night which makes it quite an enjoyable show for me.

You can't fake swimming through ice cold water in Alaska. Thats when I knew it was the real deal.

Although I do wonder when he climbs something how the camera man does the same thing only with a camera.

I like Man vs. Wild a lot, as he tends to do some more hardcore shit on camera. However, I still have to give points to Survivorman, where the guy not only has to keep his ass alive, he has to do it while lugging around and setting up cameras all by himself for a fucking week.

^^yeah but Les complains the entire show about having to lug around all the equipment. Plus its such a waste of time and effort for him to walk ahead, set up the camera equipment, then walk back to his original position, just to get a good shot of himself.

he does a lot of really stupid / impulsive shit just to be more 'impressive' on his show....

like climbing a tree in the jungle.... it's the jungle bitch, you ain't gonna see shit except green... the risk of severely injuring yourself doing something like that out weighs any 'benefit'

"man vs wild >>> survivorman"

oh god, here we go again

i dont even understand how anyone can compare the two

Quote :
"After his marriage to Sue Jamison in 1994, the two of them spent one year living in the Canadian wilderness living a paleolithic existence. They travelled to Goldsborough Lake ( 50°41'55?N, 89°20'46?W) deep in the Wabakimi and built a cabin with no metal, plastic, or otherwise manufactured tools. They took a store of traditional foods and attempted to supplement it by hunting and trapping. Family and medical emergencies brought them out of the bush on two occasions. Their primitive living experience was filmed by Stroud and released as the 50 minute documentary, Snowshoes and Solitude, which was named Best Documentary at the Muskoka Film Festival and Best Film at the Waterwalker Film Festival"

Les may have not climbed to the top of Everest or broke his back jumping out of planes but If I were trapped out in the wilderness i would prefer to be with Les.

As someone who has participated in wilderness survival [a little bit / not much] ... Les wins hands down. He teaches more skill in his show Survival Man than Bear does in a complete season.

Les is also blindfolded many times so he cant get a sense of direction before he is left in the wild where as Bear is eating Fish and Chips enjoying the view and learning which way he has to head back.

not to mention that Les carries ~70-80lbs of camera equipment and shoots the entire program himself.

another point, IMO, that shows how much better the Survival Man show is the point that Les is left with a junker of some sort of automobile or something that he dismantles for parts to help him survive ... kind of like a Macgyver meets the Boy Scouts

http://www.lesstroudonline.com/blog/

has his blog about his new season....very interesting read even if prefer the other show.

now i like Man V/s Wild and watch it every week but still find Les to be more informative

How often will someone (who has cable and is watching the show) be in a situation where they did not see the direction they were coming from before being stranded.

Another great point but who goes on a dirtbike trip on a moped? I'm not disagreeing with you, just bringing a different perspective.

i would say pretty much never unless the people were like in a plane or something....he just does it to show people how to get bearings w/out knowing the way you came in.

the junkers that are left for him are things that are used in real life situations. for example the show about the plane crash during winter in the deep Canadian Wilderness.
He showed how to use the plane wreckage to make a shelter and explained what type of materials to salvage such as wires, seat cushions ... the padding out of some of the seats

hell, he made gloves by using the carcass of snow rabbits he caught with snares from the plane wire

The mountain bike rider getting lost canyon riding in Utah...he didnt have a junker left for that one ...he just took his knife and cut holes in both tires...then took the bike apart to help make a shelter and other things
