This is your top ten bands list--explain it.

Hmmm. In no particular order:

- Pixies are my favorite band ever. I honestly believe that they never recorded a bad song. Ever.

- Guided By Voices have released at least a hundred stone cold brilliant pop songs. I have no idea how they did it. However, considering the appreciable amount of love I give to a band that released only one stone cold brilliant pop song (Spacehog), GBV need a lot of love.

- Elvis Costello & the Attractions...at least three fantastic pop albums in an aesthetic that didn't exist beforehand. To be fair, thought, if I were tossing bands off this list they'd probably be the first to go.

- There is no punk without the Stooges. "Down on the Street" might be the most brutal, ass-kicking rock 'n' roll single of all time.

- The Beach Boys made Pet Sounds, the greatest album ever, but they also made Wild Honey, a damn fine white soul album, Surf's Up, a damn fine depresso '70s pop album, The Beach Boys Love You, a whacked-out crazy-assed casio-psych record, and had a black lead singer for at least two singles. And don't get me started on The Beach Boys Today! They rule.

- The Clash: Go listen to London Calling and Sandinista! back-to-back and tell me they're not one of the ten best bands ever.

- The Rolling Stones are the best blues band of all time. People talk about how Wilco changed the game for alt-country bands with Yankee Hotel Foxtrot...the Stones changed the game for blues bands at least five times.

- Sonic Youth took a time when jangle-pop was all the rage and made three fantastic noise-punk records with HOOKS some of the best-selling records in the underground because they were just that good. Twenty years later, they're still making vital rock music that still sounds like SY but doesn't constantly tread the same ground.

- People will forever talk about the great debate between the Beatles and Stones. One of the arguments is that you can't compare them because the Beatles were essentially a pop band and the Stones were essentially a rock band (though I disagree with the second statement). The Kinks were the best of both worlds, and their pop acumen is criminally underrepresented. I'm not trying to shit on the Beatles or Stones, but I'm confident in saying that the best of the Kinks is on par with the best of either.

- I really like Talking Heads, but they're another band that would probably get tossed off the list in a pinch. This only highlights the fact that far too much music runs through my head at any given time for me to just rattle off ten bands. For instance, right now I sort of think that Gang of Four are more important than Talking Heads despite having only one great record.

For the record, when anyone asks who my favorite bands are, my stock answer is Beach Boys/Clash/Pixies.

Do you think that "Go Ask Alice" is an actual diary or is it the creative, mostly fictional work of an overzealous editor, based on various experiences that she had heard about?

what's your opinion on echo and the bunnymen?

i have a love/hate relationship with them. saw them over the weekend, thought it was tired and uninspired. ian mcculloch's prima donna behavior seemed forced and distracting too. idk

Man, I thought about that as I posted and forgot to edit. I guess any sequel that goes straight to DVD or becomes a made for TV movie would be right out. And then there are sequels to sleeper hits that come out just to capitalize on the previous title's recent success. Yes, this is indeed quite complicated.

How about your favorite film sequel?

Have you seen the recent episode of Degrassi where Emma starts smoking pot and everybody calls her Blaze and then the moral of the story is pot is bad because a girl with diabeetus ate so many pot brownies she went into a diabetic coma? Because it's pretty fucking great.

^^Pardon me while I split hairs. The moral of the story wasn't that smoking pot is bad. The moral was that its bad to co-opt a trait/behavior just for the sake of crafting an "interesting" personality. In Emma's case, it happened to be pot.

I don't think the two are that far apart, at least not as far as you suggest.

Imagine if Waters or Gilmour could have gotten Syd to be the "Brian Wilson" of Pink Floyd. You know, the drug-influenced guy who writes the songs but doesn't play them live.
