it's the overall section width. the tread width can vary some based on the profile (rounded vs squared off shoulders, etc)

[Edited on November 18, 2009 at 11:55 PM. Reason : my theory is that under cornering load, the tire deforms and rolls over enough that it's a wash]

You should get something with a stiffer sidewall then

I'm tempted to upgrade to Potenzas RE070s when these wear out.

So I recently changed from AP1 to AP2 V1 wheels with Sumitomo HTR ZIII tires (225f, 255r) and there is noticeably more grip. I now get to fairly easily take the cloverleaf on ramp to work at 55 in the mornings.

FUCK

I put those Star-Specs on the S2000 about 3 weeks ago. maybe even a little less.

the rears are already nearly trashed...like getting down to near the wear bars. I got it aligned today...I was planning on doing it anyway, but figured that if I put it off for a couple of weeks, it wouldn't make any difference. When I noticed the tire wear, I pretty much moved it up to near-emergency priority, but the damage is pretty much already done.

So...I just got back from dropping my daughter off with her mother...had to drive home in the rain, and those rear tires are definitely toast.

Less than one month of tire life =

^That's gotta be a record for the shortest lasting set of rear tires on a S2000 I've heard of.

Sounds like you had excessive toe, you have to remember even a small amount of cross toe side to side will mean that for every mile the car's driven (straight) the tires would be dragged sideways for dozens of feet. 1 degree would be more than enough to trash a set of soft rubber, like the star specs. If you do find the "before" specs, please share.

So, uhh, my S2000 is shaking and the steel belts are protruding from the right rear, with the left rear not far behind.

I called Tire Rack and explained that I knew that those Star Specs were a soft, high-performance tire that wouldn't last long (and certainly had no treadlife warranty), but was there anything they could do? They offered 2 replacement tires at a cost of $90/each with free shipping...I'm very pleased with that.

Damn you Honda, what the NSX could have been...

Quote :
"The Honda NSX might be gone, but it's set to live on as the HSV-10 GT in Japan's SuperGT championship.

Although we don't have an official release or specs yet, we do have the image above and some preliminary details on the HSV-10 GT or Velocity Sports Honda. Built to the 2010 GT500 regulations, the new front/mid-engine racer from Honda is packing a 500+ hp, 3.4-liter V8 and sending power through the same Ricardo sequential manual gearbox fitted to the 2010 SuperGT cars from Nissan and Toyota. Underneath all that glorious carbon fiber is the same chassis Honda's been working on (originally as an NSX replacement) for the last two years. The SuperGT season opener is scheduled for March 20 and 21 of 2010, but we expect more details and a host of high-res images to hit soon. Stay tuned... "

^

so i don't really want a s2000 for myself. my level of desire of interaction with one would be something like having a good friend that once had an s2000, which was sold to his parents, whom i see a couple of times a year and are kind enough to let me toss it around for a bit.

wait a minute...success!!!

"LSx V8 Powered Honda S2000

We have been developing the S2000 platform this year. The car is currently under construction and will be finished in the first quarter of 2010. Our goal with the car is to develop mail order parts so the home builder can complete the project with ease.

Our conversion parts will be targeted towards naturally aspirated street and race applications. However, this initial build is planned to be a single turbo LS2 car.

We'll post more information as the development continues. Stay tuned...

You are doing something incredibly wrong. Even under track conditions, a tire like this should last 500+ miles, and EASILY last 5k+ miles on the street. Unless you just drive like an absolute retard, or pull burnouts daily, something is wrong with your vehicle.

yeah, the alignment was a little bit off.

that, and i bet I drove 3000 miles or close to it over those particular 3 weeks.

i never do burnouts (that is a ferociously abusive task in an S2000, anyway), but I have been known to slide it a little here and there.

I had a pair of rears that wore out only on the insides of the tires after a rotation.

I didn't know they needed to be replaced until I saw the car up on a jack and saw huge strips of missing rubber.
