I mean, I get the spirit behind the 1stA, but there are ways to hold specific social media platforms more accountable (reddit, Twitter, fb, etc). When people are being murdered in the name of political ideology, you go after the places that incubate it. If that doesn’t work, I guess it’s time to clog the courts with lawsuits. LOL wait nvm. We already have a stacked SCOTUS, a gerrymander GOP legislative branch, and a tyrant nationalist president who’s going to do whatever it takes to squelch a “free” press.

Seriously, trying to type all of that out just made me realize that we’re fucked proper. We could have done something about this a while ago, just like other countries did to limit hate speech, but we didn’t and we allowed the “everyone is sooooo sensitive and this PC thing has gone on way too long” talking point to erode critical thought. If you want a crystal ball to see what the US will look like in a few years, Brazil will likely offer a great sneak preview of what’s to come, now that they have their own version of Trump, and the existing corruption infrastructure to get the party started.

As long as they don't personally know anyone who's openly a Nazi, this is all just the media stoking fears irrationally. They don't care Trump is tweeting veiled threats, they don't care the border is being militarized bc of 1000 poor people, they can't perceive the effect of a large country like Brazil falling to fascism.

Lots of people have been saying this, but it's really easy to see now how the Nazis took hold in Germany. If you do things slowly enough (over the course of a few years), you can get people to turn a blind eye to atrocities until it's too late.

I'm thinking back again too to the reports that the FBI has been warning about this for years, but one of the first thing Trump's admin did was reallocate resources from right-wing terror investigations to ISIS.
