Yea the Sater stuff has been under investigation for quite a while now. But I believe this particular information is new, considering it mentions the pursuit of a deal in Russia during the actual campaign.

https://www.nytimes.com/2017/08/28/us/politics/trump-tower-putin-felix-sater.html

Quote :
"WASHINGTON — A business associate of President Trump promised in 2015 to engineer a real estate deal with the aid of the president of Russia, Vladimir V. Putin, that he said would help Mr. Trump win the presidency.

The associate, Felix Sater, wrote a series of emails to Mr. Trump’s lawyer, Michael Cohen, in which he boasted about his ties to Mr. Putin and predicted that building a Trump Tower in Moscow would highlight Mr. Trump’s savvy negotiating skills and be a political boon to his candidacy.

“Our boy can become president of the USA and we can engineer it,” Mr. Sater wrote in an email. “I will get all of Putins team to buy in on this, I will manage this process.”"

Quote :
"Mr. Sater, a Russian immigrant, said he had lined up financing for the Trump Tower deal with VTB Bank, a Russian bank that was under American sanctions for involvement in Moscow’s efforts to undermine democracy in Ukraine. In another email, Mr. Sater envisioned a ribbon-cutting ceremony in Moscow.

“I will get Putin on this program and we will get Donald elected,” Mr. Sater wrote."

https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2017/aug/30/trump-tower-russia-meeting-chuck-grassley

Quote :
"Donald Trump called a senior Republican senator from Iowa on Wednesday whose congressional committee is investigating his son, Donald Trump Jr, and promised him critical federal support for the biofuel ethanol, a key issue for the lawmaker.

Chuck Grassley, the chairman of the Senate judiciary committee and a major advocate of the ethanol industry, announced on Twitter that he had received a phone call from Trump and had been assured by the US president that Trump was “pro ethanol” and was “standing by his campaign PROMISE” to support the biofuel.

The phone call came less than a day after CNN reported that Trump’s eldest son had reached an agreement with the committee to appear in a private session and answer investigators’ questions. "

http://talkingpointsmemo.com/livewire/nbc-news-reports-manafort-took-notes-on-donations-russian-lawyer

Quote :
"Citing two unnamed sources briefed on 'evidence,' NBC News reported that Manafort took notes on a smart phone during the meeting with Natalia Veselnitskaya, a lawyer linked to the Kremlin, that Donald Trump, Jr. had arranged after being promised compromising information on Hillary Clinton as part of a Russian government effort to help his father's campaign.

Manafort's notes included the word 'donations' close to the abbreviation 'RNC,' or Republican National Committee, according to the report, which didn’t provide further context.

Rinat Akhmetshin, a Russian-American lobbyist who also attended the meeting, told the Associated Press in July that Veselnitskaya presented Trump Jr. and the other attendees at the meeting with documents detailing what she claimed was a flow of illicit funds to the Democratic National Committee.

NBC News previously had reported that Veselnitskaya thinks she attracted the Trump campaign's interest because she had 'details about a company run by a former U.S. citizen' that she believes 'didn't pay taxes in either Russia or the U.S. and may also have made donations to the D.N.C.'"

It may just be me, but this author seems to suggest a relationship between: 1) the "RNC" abbreviation and reference to donations in Manafort's notes from the Donald Jr. meeting and 2) the previous claims that the Donald Jr. meeting was regarding illicit donations that had been made to the DNC.

Doesn't suggest it, states the evidence indicates it:

Manafort, during the meeting we've all been hearing about as of late in June of 2016 which included several Russian nationals, Donald Trump Jr. and Jared Kushner, took notes and in those notes they found references to the RNC and to donations.

What it likely is implying is a quid-pro-quo of donations being funneled to the RNC among possible other benefits in exchange for continuing to suck Russia's dick. But nothing we can assess from it (obviously) unless it's confirmed by anyone in the investigation so who knows where this leads.

I'm curious as to whether the DNC was referenced as a means to say, perhaps, that Manafort's notes contained a typo and that "RNC" donations should have actually been noted as "DNC" donations.

Ah, didn't realize you were saying that. Yea, hell of a typo if so. Definitely believable considering the R is right next to the D.

"3) On March 21, 2016, The Washington Post asked Trump for the names of his foreign policy team. Trump gave 5 names, one of them Carter Page."

Quote :
"4) Page was at the time representing himself as an energy investor, advisor, and expert—with a particular focus on transactions in Russia."

Quote :
"5) The problem was that when the media started asking around about Page, they couldn't find anyone in the industry who'd ever heard of him."

Quote :
"6) The only response the media could get when they asked experts on Russia's energy industry about Page was, "Who?"
https://t.co/J4ddRkfc2L"

Quote :
"7) In fact, the most notable biographical fact about Page was that in 2013 the FBI had investigated him for passing intel to a Russian spy."

Quote :
"8) The FBI had intercepts suggesting that, as of 2013, the Russians were seriously considering trying to use Page as a spy for the Kremlin."

Quote :
"9) Page's contacts with Russian spy Victor Podobnyy—who would later be charged by the U.S.—ended around June 2013.

Quote :
"12) For a long time, Page was cagey about who possibly could've known him well enough to think him appropriate for a presidential campaign."

"13) It was later revealed that Sam Clovis recruited Page. Clovis was just—very oddly—nominated to a position he has no business serving in."

Quote :
"14) To wit, Trump has nominated Clovis—a non-scientist—to run the USDA, making it look like a patronage appointment.
https://t.co/d7IsltR7Y3"

Quote :
"15) The nomination came on July 21, just three weeks before big Russia-related news involving Sam Clovis would drop in The Washington Post."

Quote :

Quote :
"17) The Washington Post story established a second major point of intersection between Sam Clovis and Carter Page.
https://t.co/Vz5dcApEZy"

Quote :
"18) Page's peer on Trump's foreign policy team, George Papadopoulos—as unqualified as Page—began sending emails in March about a Putin meet."

Quote :
"19) George Papadopoulos had connections in "Russian leadership" and wanted to discuss with top Trump brass a Trump-Putin meeting in Moscow."

Quote :
"20) Clovis' first response was that the campaign should discuss the possibility with its friends and associates connected to NATO countries."

Quote :
"21) By May, Clovis' position had changed. *Now* he said no advice needed to be sought, but the campaign had to be careful of "legal issues.""

Quote :
"22) Clovis focused on one issue in particular—how to get a private citizen to Moscow to speak with Kremlin agents without violating the law."

Quote :
"23) The most obvious answer—of course—was to send a private citizen to Moscow on *other business* and then keep their Kremlin meetup secret."

Quote :
"24) Corey Lewandowski was another top Trump official on this email chain about how to legally set up a Trump camp-Kremlin meeting in Moscow."

Quote :
"25) A few weeks after Lewandowski/Clovis saw Papadopoulos' proposal, Lewandowski cleared Page—Papadopoulos' FP-team peer—for a Moscow trip."

Quote :
"26) Page was cleared by Lewandowski to travel to Moscow as a private citizen to give a speech on foreign policy to journalists and students."

Quote :
"27) In his July Moscow speech, Page savaged the United States and praised Russia in terms that were deeply alarming.
https://t.co/hIm777Um19"

Quote :
"28) His comments were in fact *so* alarming the FBI opened an investigation into him and successfully secured a FISA warrant to monitor him."

Quote :
"29) This means the FBI was able to show probable cause to a U.S. court that it had a reasonable suspicion Page was engaged in illegal acts."

Quote :
"35) Page now says he "may have been in a room with Sechin" but he "didn't shake his hand"—the latter being, obviously, an immaterial detail."

Quote :
"36) The FBI is *so* convinced Page met with Sechin that—in March—they interviewed him for more hours than *any other* Trump-Russia witness."

Quote :
"37) Given a FISA warrant to tap him and 10 hours of FBI questioning, the odds the FBI has a Making False Statements charge on Page are high."

Quote :
"38) Stunningly, Page met with the FBI *without a lawyer*. As noted by The Washington Post, attorneys advise clients to *never ever* do this."

Quote :
"39) The reason's this—the FBI is expert at getting witnesses to contradict FBI-known facts so they can bring Making False Statement charges."

Quote :
"40) According to Steele's dossier—a key basis for the FBI probe—Sechin offered Trump (via Page) a .5% brokerage of a 19% Rosneft-stake sale."

Quote :
"41) Steele's top-shelf Summer '16 HUMINT was confirmed December 7—as Rosneft sold a 19.5% stake to unknown entities.
https://t.co/k2fsNCm0Hr"

Quote :
"42) Here's the kicker: *the day after* the Rosneft sale, Page traveled to Moscow and—*by his own video admission*—met with Rosneft's brass."

Quote :
"43) Here's Page's video confession he was so close to the Rosneft deal they wanted to meet with him day-after-sale:
https://twitter.com/SethAbramson/status/903263593436762112"

Quote :
"44) Keep in mind, a) the Rosneft sale was the largest oil sale in Russian history, b) Page—allegedly—was no part of the Trump campaign then."

Quote :
"45) So why in hell did Rosneft want/need to meet with Page on December 8? Why was Page—as he seems to admit—discussing sanctions with them?"

Quote :
"46) Remember that—per Steele—Sechin offered Trump a brokerage fee of the Rosneft sale in exchange for *a change in U.S. sanctions policy*."

Quote :
"47) Recall too that—even after Page was separated from the Trump campaign—he literally had "back-door access" to Trump Tower via his office."

Quote :
"48) Recall, also, that Trump always stays in contact with former advisors (e.g. Flynn, Manafort) and spent December sneaking people into TT."

Quote :
"49) Indeed, on the day the Rosneft sale closed Kushner and Flynn snuck Russian ambassador/spy Kislyak into Trump Tower for a secret meeting."

Quote :
"50) Also present was Bud McFarlane, a Russian pipeline advocate who like Kislyak had been a VIP at Trump's "Mayflower Speech" in April 2016."

Quote :
"51) It was at that speech Trump laid out his pro-Russia foreign policy, including a promise to cut Russia "a very good deal" on sanctions."

Quote :
"52) So did Page go next door to Trump Tower on December 7th—easy to do, 100% privately—then travel to Moscow to see Rosneft on December 8th?"

Quote :
"53) We know on December 7, Team Trump was at TT secretly (Kushner/Flynn sneaking Kislyak in) talking oil—McFarlane—with a Russian (Kislyak)."

Quote :
"54) We know Page—who had private access to that meeting and was a former top Trump aide—was in Moscow the next day talking to Rosneft brass."

Quote :
"55) We know Page has lied in the past on meetings with Russians, has been suspected of espionage by the FBI before, and was interrogated..."

Quote :
"56) ...more by the FBI—which trusts Steele Dossier claims about a Page/Sechin meeting, to the tune of a FISA warrant—than any other witness."

Quote :
"57) And as we've seen—Page's key credentials for being a Trump aide were willingness to meet with shady Russians and ties to Russian energy."

Quote :
"58) And—it would appear—a more fanatical devotion to Russia than to the United States, if his public comments on that score can be credited."

Quote :
"59) History will record Page's involvement in the Trump campaign as among the *strangest, most troubling episodes* in U.S. campaign history."

Quote :
"60) But as Trump has shown no loyalty to Page, it's not clear that if the FBI brings easy-to-make False Statement charges, Page won't roll."

Quote :
"PS) As I previously discovered and tweeted out, Kremlin-backed RT has erased from its website multiple articles about Page's July 2016 trip."

Quote :
"PS2) Page's public demeanor has been *beyond* strange. As a former public defender, I can say I've never seen a witness so obviously lying."

Quote :
"PS3) Some in the media have dismissed Page as a bad bet for a Trump messenger, but remember, plausible deniability was the whole point here."

Quote :
"PS4) Page was enough at the campaign's outskirts—and clearly enough a guy Trump had never been with (in public)—he was perfect for this job."

Quote :
"PS5) And the facts of his story—as laid out here—seem to confirm every aspect of the most important claim in the whole Steele Dossier. {end}"

Quote :
"NOTE) Clovis was tapped to head a division of the USDA—not the whole USDA. Note also: Clovis changed his tune on Trump-Putin post-Mayflower."

This is rich:

RT reporting the FBI is gonna search that Russian consulate in San Fran that got shut down

The twitters are reporting a steady stream of smoke from the top of the consulate (destroying evidence being the obvious explanation)

^FBI would never be able to do that unless Russia asked them to. When it comes to compounds like that, if told to vacate the country they box every single thing up and ship it out via diplomatic transit. If it's a rush job, they'll burn anything sensitive and destroy any machines too difficult to move quickly such as cryptography equipment. So to be honest, nothing seems out of the ordinary to me here.

^I'm with you on everything after your first sentence, especially since its a rush job they are in full on shred/incinerate mode right now.

However, everyone should expect that the FBI will absolutely be going into the building after the deadline (there likely won't be much for them to find).

Seems like shit is coming to a head regarding social media's role. It's the part of this we need the most investigation into. To better understand how it can influence/manipulate people, and we can start having discussions (hopefully) on what should be done, if anything.

It could very well govern how we interact on social media for the next decade (get ready for endless Captcha)

Social media was geared 99% towards getting Hillary Clinton elected. Any "investigation" into the role of social media is a poorly disguised excuse to legitimize the suppression of opinions not financially beneficial to the likes of Facebook and Twitter.

free speech bish. maybe if you invested in education, you wouldn't have to worry about people being swayed by social media. Controlling people with propaganda works both ways. You can't have your cake and eat it too.

I'm not so naive as to think there aren't back door ways of Russia financing propaganda even after the US tightens its campaign finance laws. But there are certainly small steps we can take that helps the end user understand who it is trying to influence them.

Both twitter and Facebook have tried to conceal the scope of Russian bots and apparently ads now too. It definitely helped their bottom line. There have been estimates that Russian bot traffic was as much as 20% of all twitter volume in the lead up to November 2016 (as much as 80% on specific hashtags). That volume is one of the direct measurements of company health investors use when pricing twitter stocks.

Russian propaganda was good for the bottom line of both of these companies.

But why did you post that article with an emoji and no editorial? What about Trump's wiretap claims from months ago that everyone said he was crazy for? Now that we have this information, isn't he vindicated for what seemed like a wild claim?

Seems like another example of Trump being ahead of the curve so I'd love to hear your take.

When you guys just say no and give no reasoning on the day of, it reaffirms the idea that you are waiting for someone to write a narrative that fits your predetermined conclusion.

It's quite simple. Obama didn't wiretap Trump as he claimed. Obama has nothing to do with a FISA surveillance on Paul Manafort.

Surveillance on Paul Manafort is not a wiretap on Trump Tower by a "sick guy."

It is LOL-worthy that Trump supporters see this as a win, though.

^^it's weird that you ask dumb questions and then expect detailed answers

But nym partially got you started. Trump made 3 claims in that infamous tweet, the manafort news supports none.
1. Obama did it (no, FBI and fisa courts)
2. Tapped Trump tower (no, tapped manafort)
3. Found nothing (no, found suspicious activity)

So like I said

No

This is ironic trolling I'm guessing? Considering he is pushing the same narrative FNC, Wash Times and Breitbart are about this..

Totally agree, but man the more I read about the FEC the more hopeless it seems. It seems to me that it will take legislation in order to have lasting change at the agency. The GOP has repeatedly tried to throw a wrench in all efforts to bring US election law into the 21st century.

People on the FEC were raising concerns about the EXACT situation we are in right now:

https://qz.com/1076964/this-us-official-warned-about-russia-using-the-internet-to-skew-us-elections-years-ago-she-got-death-threats/

She was attacked by the usual right wing on-line trolls. Probably the same trolls running around today telling us Trump is a genius and 10 steps ahead of us all.

do you understand how FISA warrants work? FISA warrants allow for the FBI/NSA to go two to three hops out from the person the warrant is for and monitor all of those people's communications as well. 2 hops on Manafort would blanket everyone inside the Trump team, and it would mean surveillance on Trump Tower with Manafort having a place there.
