Quote :
"In May, the Guardian’s Sunday Observer reported that Cambridge Analytica and its UK affiliate... have worked in Russia, Lithuania, Latvia, Ukraine, Iran and Moldova.

'Multiple Cambridge Analytica sources have revealed other links to Russia, including trips to the country, meetings with executives from Russian state-owned companies, and references by SCL employees to working for Russian entities,' the Observer reported."

Quote :
"The interview was part of a broader effort by Mueller to examine the relationship between the longtime GOP operative, Peter Smith, and the former national security adviser Michael Flynn and whether Flynn played any role in seeking out the stolen emails during the election. Smith killed himself in May after talking to The Wall Street Journal about his experience."

I've lost track of all of the various prongs to this investigation. Was there anything more to Peter Smith's involvement in this potential scandal other than what's been referenced in this article?

I don't believe so - the reason it became such big news mostly was because of the suicide and the timing thereof.

Essentially, we're trying to contain them but aren't doing a good job because we're relying on laws to do it as opposed to actions.

At the same time, Russia is trying to reverse a lot of damage done to their geopolitical position post 1991. They're making progress because they're relying on actions and ignoring laws.

The United States can't do shit because we expended all of our will and most of our treasury on the stupid Iraq '03 war and are also preoccupied with terrorism (a non-existential threat that has every one in America terrified for no reason) and China's economic and military expansion.

If we ever wonder why the GOP sucks at governing and is only good at obstructionism and absurd committee investigations remember that this (^^) is their base.

Doesn’t give one single fuck about making the country better, treating people fairly or general well-being. Cares only about Liberal tears and Clinton stories. He isn’t unusual.

Quote :
"If we found out that Donald Trump’s campaign and the Republican National Committee had paid a firm working for the Russians to create a file of fabricated attacks on Hillary Clinton during the election, would the media treat it as an impeachable offense?...

According to The Washington Post’s reporting, much of this likely happened, but in reverse. The Post claims that Marc E. Elias, a lawyer representing the Clinton campaign and the Democratic National Committee, had hired Fusion GPS, a DC firm that was working on behalf of Russians to undermine American sanctions, to do opposition work for them."

Where has it been reported that Fusion GPS was working on behalf of Russians to undermine American sanctions?

I only remember it coming up around Bill Browders testimony to the Senate (end of July):
http://www.businessinsider.com/fusion-gps-trump-russia-dossier-bill-browder-2017-7

Browder suggests he's been filing complaints against Fusion for violating FARA since December 2016.

Yep I recall that. I think the issue (initially) was that Fusion didn't register as an agent of a foreign power or something to that effect.

"A law firm representing the Clinton campaign and the Democratic National Convention hired the intelligence firm that eventually hired the dossier’s author, Chris Steele, to investigate Trump’s alleged ties to Russia and possible coordination between the Trump campaign and the Kremlin."

Little details like this need to be reported correctly.

A GOP entity hired Fusion GPS (a corporate/private intelligence firm) to perform opposition research on Donald Trump.

Fusion GPS hired Orbis Business Intelligence Ltd (A corporate/private intelligence firm) specifically for information as it related to Russia and Eastern Europe.

The GOP entity then ended the contract and stopped paying them and a law firm representing Hillary Clinton's campaign as well as the DNC then picked up the contract and started paying them to continue the work that was already initiated.

The reasons I get bothered by this:
1) Hillary Clinton did not hire anyone
2) The campaign/DNC law firm did not initiate this
3) A GOP entity initiated this (simply pointing out that both sides were engaged with this)
4) Most importantly - The memos (I hate the word dossier for some reason) were compiled by an individual that was hired by Fusion GPS. I point THIS out because many on the right are arguing that Steele is full of shit and that Hillary hired him to make it all up. The people interacting with Fusion GPS had no clue they had sub-contracted out to Orbis (at least that's what I understand). So even if it ever came out that Steele was full of shit (it hasn't and won't because a lot of what he reported already has been proven true), the people who originally hired Fusion would never have known Steele was the guy doing the work to begin with.

Also, I think it's slightly important to note the below excerpt from the law firm's letter: http://cdn.cnn.com/cnn/2017/images/10/25/fusion.perkins.coie.pdf

(paraphrased) - "Fusion GPS approached [the law firm] in March of 2016 to discuss working together. In April 2016 [the law firm] hired Fusion GPS."

In other words, after the GOP stopped funding them they decided the Hillary campaign could possibly use the information and approached them to see if they'd be interested.

This is all quite a big difference from the standard right-leaning mantra at the moment of "Hillary hired Steele to make up a fake dossier about Donald Trump."

Anyway I'd honestly ignore these opinion pieces as they just further cloud everything that's going on and whip up hysteria on both sides. Remember, even if Mueller does drop a bombshell before Thanksgiving it is entirely possible that his bombshell is that Trump did nothing wrong, had no clue any wrongdoing was going on and that Tony Podesta is under arrest for working with Russian intelligence for something else.

That being said, I tend to agree with this sentiment:

Quote :
"Kayyem speculated that the pace of stories critical of Hillary Clinton represents “a recognition by the White House team” that Mueller is getting close to something substantive as a result of his investigation."

This is mind-numbing to me:

http://thehill.com/homenews/media/357514-foxs-wallace-more-evidence-of-dem-collusion-with-russia-than-gop

Quote :
"The fact that Hillary Clinton, or at least her campaign and the DNC, was doing business with a foreign national, a British spy, to get information from the Russians for this dossier certainly blunts the idea, 'Well, it was the Trump campaign and it was outrageous the Trump campaign was having anything to do with the Russians to maybe affect at the election.'...

This is far more evidence than we've ever seen involving President Trump and his campaign that the Democrats were directly involved in trying to get information from the Russians to affect the 2016 campaign...

We still have to wait and see, but there is more evidence at this point of Democratic collusion with the Russians than there is of Republican collusion with the Russians."

Is the theory that the Kremlin was feeding Christopher Steele fake intelligence about Donald Trump colluding with the Kremlin?

I just stare speechless at this point.

And they let this guy moderate presidential debates. I just cannot understand what is wrong with us.

^yep

^^^couple thing I can think of but depends on whether the individual/s being arrested were given notice as sometimes happens

if they have notice, it's likely an arrangement to turn themselves in via their lawyers

i wonder if announcing it this way is an attempt to see if anyone tries to flee over the weekend

could take the weekend to get an arrest warrant maybe?

actually aren't there a few cops on here? probably way better for them to answer this, or lawyers if we actually have any on here

^^ The indictment was leaked, not announced.

If the indictment had actually stayed sealed, I would assume they need a few days to plan and coordinate the arrest in a way that minimizes risk to other parts of the investigation.
