He's not worth $4 million. I'm not sure why you can't understand that. Of course he'd be an upgrade, of course I'd want him for $2 million. But you don't write huge checks to make up for lost time. That's how you dig big holes for yourself.

Make the smart move, not the expensive move.

As crazy as it may sound on name value alone, I'm with wlb240 in that I'd rather go after Sean Miller.

Agreed

Rick Barnes isn't coming here. If he does, I'll be glad to have a good coach on the sidelines. If we overpay him, oh well, fuck you gymnastics team.

whoever we hire, I hope the majority (I realize there will never be 100% agreement, especially on TWW) of the fanbase can move past "Prior coach vs. Current coach" and automatically hating on the guy from the start like Herb supporters did with Lowe

it's not fun to follow NC State sports when you have to deal with that shit after every fucking game

I'm sorry but that's a ridiculous statement on so many levels.

Do you really believe that if Barnes came here he wouldn't have any passion, enthusiam, or desire? C'mon man! I'm almost 100% certain that every single up and comer has passion and enthusiasm. What percentage of up and comers that get hired to a big school have put together a resume half as good as Barnes? It's just not likely to happen with an up and comer. For it to make sense to take an up and comer over Barnes then the up and comer would have surpass Barnes accomplishments.

You want to take a chance on that when you can have a guaranteed post season every single year? With an appearance every single year there is opportunity for a national championship. Roy didn't win a NC with Kansas did he? He was an outstanding hire by UNC.

If Dan Syder was a NC State alum he'd write a check to Rick Barnes for 10mil a year just because he got into an arguement with Dean Smith.

The difference there is that Bob Knight physically abused his players where as Roy mentally abuses his. Duh.

If the new "current coach" is not better than the previous three "prior coaches" then we all need to find a new school to support. This hire has to be good or NCSU basketball might as well fold and become a Southern Conference member.

We could probably lure Izzo away from Michigan State

After all, The ACC is historically a much better conference than the Big Ten

and the final selling point would be how much nicer Raleigh is than East Lansing

it's time to make a splash in the national basketball scene...woodson wanted a big name ad and he got it...time to get a big name bball coach too. i want us to be relevant again and a big name coach like a jay wright would give us that respect.

plus a big name coach will fill the seats immediately this coming season and start generating the return on the HUGE investment we'd have to make

"Myth #2: No One Wanted the NC State Job in 2006

You have to love lazy, revisionist history. So I’ll keep this one pretty short: Under athletics director Lee Fowler, State was involved with John Calipari, Rick Barnes, John Beilein and Steve Lavin, among others, with various degrees of interest or reciprocation. So to say that “no one” wanted the job is kind of, well, not smart.

You could argue -- compellingly, from my point of view -- that Fowler did a poor job of conducting the coaching search five years ago. But that is a separate and distinct issue from whether or not the job was viewed as attractive or desirous at that point in time.

In fact, quite to the contrary of what many media pundits think, I actually feel that folks would be pretty surprised at how many “name” coaches would be and are highly intrigued by the NC State job."

Thank you, Packpride writer, for destroying the myth that literally no one wanted the job. Because that's what people mean when they say no one wanted the job.

And what is this guy using to refute the contention that the big names he listed weren't actually interested and were just using State for a pay raise? Basically his counter argument is, "nuh-uh."

No it's not. How many impact players have we had from west of the Mississippi lately? How about UNC and Duke? We might try, but it's pretty foolish to pretend we have the national brand that they have.

Most of their players come from east of the mississippi too. But you're right, we don't have the national name that they do.

Yeah, but ALL of our players do. Not that it's inherently bad, just that it's completely against the point Packpride dude was trying to make.

^ Packpride isn't exactly the official NC State sports information outlet. They have as much credibility as the Pack Insider, just more money and slightly better writers.

once again, TBDV.

but seriously, 99% of their players come from east of the mississippi, just like ours and every other major program on the east coast. it doesn't matter how awesome you are, most kids aren't going to want to go to college on the other side of the country from everyone they know.

a national scale doesn't have to mean you get the best kids in california. there are plenty of great HS basketball players on this side of the US. NY, Indiana, NC, etc., etc.

But seriously

No shit. California also isn't the only state west of the Mississippi.

My point, again, who was our last impact player from west of the Mississippi? I can't think of a single one in the last ten years.

On the other hand

UNC: Barnes, Drew, Deon Thompson, Wear twins, Hansbrough, Alex Stephenson, Quentin Thomas, Marvin Williams, Adam Boone, Brian Morrison

Duke: Singler, DeMarcus Nelson, Taylor King, Jamal Boykin, Shelden Williams, Daniel Ewing, Duhon, Nick Horvath, Dunleavy, not to mention they've had multiple POY candidates from fucking Alaska

Interesting, though, that a lot of the west coast players ended up transfering

Again, no shit. Again, the writer said nationally.

Quote :

Agreed, most of the best out of state players from all three teams have come from NY/NJ and OH/IN. I'm not saying we need to recruit California, I'm just saying it's ridiculous for this guy to suggest we do it as well as Duke or Carolina. Zero recruits for us, dozens for them.

If we want to compete with them, eventually we will be. We don't compete with them for recruits because we're finishing in the basement every year. CJ Leslie, our biggest recruit in forever, at one time had interest from Roy.

Locally we've long competed with them; Duke especially more recently. Off the top of my head we lost Shavlik and Kelly.

Leslie was never offered by UNC or Duke (I think on Duke's behalf at least) and I'm not sure how serious the interest really was.
